Chapter 9: The Heir Who Wasn’t His

The document remained on the table.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody spoke.

Because sometimes the most powerful truth was not the one that was shouted.

It was the one sitting silently in front of everyone.

Luciano read the words again.

Then again.

As if his eyes could have misunderstood.

But they had not.

The name on the document did not change.

The signature did not disappear.

The date did not move.

For his entire life, he had believed he was Augusto Valenti’s son.

The heir.

The firstborn.

The person chosen to carry the family name.

But the paper said otherwise.

And suddenly every moment from his childhood looked different.

Every argument.

Every expectation.

Every impossible standard.

Every time Augusto looked at him like he was a responsibility instead of a son.

Maybe there had always been a reason.

“You knew.””

Luciano’s voice was barely above a whisper.

He was looking at Elena.

Not Augusto.

Not Dario.

His mother.

Elena’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt more than denial.

Luciano stepped back.

“You knew my entire life.””

“I did.””

“And you said nothing.””

“I was afraid.””

He laughed quietly.

A painful sound.

“Everyone is always afraid.””

His eyes moved toward Augusto.

“My father.””

Then toward Dario.

“My brother.””

Then back to Elena.

“My mother.””

A pause.

“Who was I supposed to trust?””

Augusto finally moved.

He reached toward the document.

Luciano grabbed it first.

“No.””

For the first time, Augusto stopped.

Not because Luciano raised his voice.

Because Luciano did not.

There was something different about him now.

The anger was gone.

The need for approval was gone.

The desire to understand his father was gone.

Only clarity remained.

Augusto looked at him.

“You don’t understand what that document means.””

Luciano stared.

“Then explain.””

Silence.

“Explain why my entire life was built on a lie.””

Augusto’s expression hardened.

“You think blood makes someone a father?””

The words should have sounded defensive.

Instead, they sounded almost desperate.

Luciano felt something inside him shift.

Because for the first time, he saw it.

Not a powerful businessman.

Not the head of the Valenti empire.

A man terrified of losing the only identity he had ever cared about.

“You knew.””

Luciano’s voice lowered.

“You knew I wasn’t your son.””

Augusto looked away.

“Yes.””

The room reacted.

Even the executives who had remained silent could not hide their shock.

Luciano closed his eyes.

“How long?””

“Since before you were born.””

The answer was devastating.

Before he was born.

Before he had a choice.

Before he had a name.

Elena stepped forward.

“Luciano, listen to me.””

He looked at her.

“Who was he?””

She knew immediately who he meant.

His biological father.

She hesitated.

And that hesitation told him the truth was even bigger.

“His name was Gabriel Moretti.””

Luciano frowned.

The name sounded familiar.

“Moretti?””

Marcus, standing near the table, suddenly looked up.

“Wait.””

Everyone turned.

Marcus opened his laptop.

“Gabriel Moretti?””

Elena nodded.

“Yes.””

Marcus looked at Luciano.

“Your grandfather’s former business partner.””

The room went silent.

Luciano stared at his mother.

“My father was my grandfather’s partner?””

“Yes.””

“And Augusto knew?””

“Yes.””

A terrible realization formed.

The empire.

The illegal deals.

The hidden documents.

The family secrets.

Everything connected back to one person.

Gabriel Moretti.

“What happened to him?””

Elena looked down.

“He died.””

“How?””

Nobody answered.

Luciano looked at Augusto.

And this time, Augusto did not look away fast enough.

That was enough.

Luciano’s voice became cold.

“My father killed him.””

Augusto finally spoke.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

“I did not kill him.””

The distinction was immediate.

And terrifying.

Because it meant there was a truth between murder and innocence.

A truth Augusto had spent decades hiding.

Isabella stepped forward.

“I know what happened.””

Luciano turned.

“You?””

She nodded.

“My father told me.””

She looked at Augusto.

“And yours destroyed his life.””

Augusto’s face tightened.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“I know enough.””

Isabella’s voice remained calm.

“Gabriel discovered what Matteo was doing.””

She looked at Luciano.

“He wanted to expose him.””

“Then why didn’t he?””

“Because Augusto stopped him.””

Luciano stared.

“How?””

Isabella looked at the document.

“By making a deal.””

The room went quiet.

“What deal?””

Isabella looked at Elena.

Then back at Luciano.

“A deal involving you.””

Luciano felt cold.

“Me?””

Elena started crying.

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“Luciano, you were never part of the deal.””

“Then why say my name?””

Isabella answered.

“Because Augusto knew the only way to keep Gabriel silent was to take away the one thing he cared about.””

Luciano understood before she finished.

“Me.””

The story came out slowly.

Piece by piece.

Like a wound being opened after years of being covered.

Gabriel Moretti discovered evidence against Matteo Valenti.

He planned to expose the family.

But before he could, he learned Elena was pregnant.

With his child.

Matteo saw an opportunity.

He offered Gabriel a choice.

Disappear.

Or watch everything collapse.

Gabriel refused.

So Matteo destroyed him.

His reputation.

His business.

His future.

Then Augusto continued what his father started.

But Augusto did something different.

He took Luciano.

Not physically.

Not like Matteo had taken Isabella.

Something worse.

He made Luciano part of the Valenti legacy.

He raised him.

Trained him.

Prepared him.

Not because he loved him.

Because he needed control over Gabriel’s last connection to the truth.

“You raised me to protect a lie.””

Augusto looked at him.

“No.””

Luciano waited.

“I raised you because you were my son.””

The words surprised everyone.

Even Luciano.

Augusto continued.

“I may not have given you blood.””

His voice cracked slightly.

“But I gave you everything.””

Luciano stared.

“Everything except the truth.””

Silence.

And that was the one thing Augusto could not argue against.

Later that night, Luciano returned to Celeste.

He did not tell her everything immediately.

Not because he wanted to hide it.

Because he needed one place where he could exist without being a Valenti.

Without being an heir.

Without being a weapon.

Celeste looked at him.

“You found something.””

He sat beside her.

“Yes.””

“Bad?””

He looked at her.

“The worst.””

She reached for his hand.

“Tell me.””

So he did.

He told her about Gabriel.

About Augusto.

About Isabella.

About the years of lies.

And when he finished, Celeste remained silent.

Then she said:

“You’re still you.””

Luciano looked away.

“That’s all?””

“What else would you be?””

“I don’t know.””

She squeezed his hand.

“Your blood didn’t make you the man you are.””

A small pause.

“Your choices did.””

For the first time in days, Luciano felt something close to peace.

Then his phone rang.

Marcus.

Luciano answered.

“What happened?””

Marcus sounded shaken.

“We found the original file from Matteo’s archive.””

“The evidence?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

A long pause.

“Luciano…”

“What?””

“It changes everything.””

Luciano stood.

“What is it?””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“The document you found was real.””

Luciano waited.

“But it wasn’t the only document.””

His heartbeat increased.

“What else?””

“The inheritance records.””

“And?””

Marcus hesitated.

“According to Matteo’s final instructions…”

The silence stretched.

“Luciano, you were never supposed to inherit the Valenti empire.””

He frowned.

“Then who was?””

Marcus answered:

“Your sister.””

Luciano looked toward Celeste.

Toward the city outside.

Toward the entire world that had been built on lies.

Because suddenly the question was no longer who betrayed him.

May you like

The question was why everyone had spent twenty-nine years preparing him for a throne that was never meant to be his.

And what would happen when the person who was supposed to inherit everything finally came to claim it.
