Chapter 6: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Luciano kept the phone against his ear long after the call ended.

The silence afterward felt louder than the voice itself.

He knew that voice.

Not because he remembered conversations.

Not because he had spent time with the woman behind it.

But because some memories lived deeper than logic.

A childhood photograph.

A name whispered during family arguments.

A face his mother refused to discuss.

Isabella.

His mother’s younger sister.

The woman everyone told him had died before he was born.

Except now she had called him.

And she knew exactly what was happening inside the Valenti family.

Luciano looked back at the recording from his grandfather.

The words repeated in his mind.

*The person Augusto has spent years protecting.*

Not destroying.

Not hiding from.

Protecting.

His father had not been covering up an enemy.

He had been protecting someone connected to the secret.

Someone alive.

Someone who knew the truth.

The first person Luciano called was not Marcus.

It was Elena.

She answered after one ring.

As if she had been waiting.

“Where are you?””

Her voice was tense.

“Home.””

A pause.

“Which home?””

Luciano looked around his office.

The family portraits.

The old furniture.

The walls that had witnessed generations of lies.

“The mansion.””

Elena exhaled.

“You shouldn’t be there alone.””

“You knew.””

Silence.

Luciano closed his eyes.

“Mom.””

Another silence.

“You knew Isabella was alive.””

The line went completely quiet.

And that was all the answer he needed.

“When were you going to tell me?””

“Luciano—”

“No.””

His voice remained calm.

But the pain underneath it was impossible to hide.

“I spent my entire life believing someone in my family was dead.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Everyone says that.””

He looked toward the window.

“My father says he’s protecting the family.””

A pause.

“Dario says he’s protecting himself.””

His voice dropped.

“And you say you’re protecting me.””

Elena whispered:

“Because I am.””

Luciano laughed softly.

“Then why does protection always look like betrayal?””

Elena arrived twenty minutes later.

She looked older than she had the day before.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like carrying the secret had finally become heavier than hiding it.

Luciano stood in the living room.

“Tell me everything.””

Elena sat down slowly.

“When I met your father, I knew about Isabella.””

“Why?””

“Because she was my sister.””

“I know that.””

“No.””

Elena looked at him.

“You know the family version.””

Her hands trembled slightly.

“You don’t know the truth.””

Luciano waited.

“Isabella discovered what Matteo Valenti was doing.””

“What was he doing?””

Elena looked toward the portraits on the wall.

“The empire.””

She swallowed.

“The money. The contracts. The expansion.””

A pause.

“Some of it was built through illegal deals.””

Luciano stared at her.

“My grandfather?””

“Yes.””

“And my father?””

“He found out.””

“When?””

“Before your grandfather died.””

Luciano’s expression changed.

“Then why did he continue?””

Elena looked down.

“Because your father didn’t want to destroy the empire.””

She whispered:

“He wanted to inherit it.””

The words were brutal because they sounded exactly like Augusto.

Luciano had spent his life trying to separate himself from his father.

But now he wondered how much of him was shaped by the same darkness.

“Where is Isabella now?”” Luciano asked.

Elena hesitated.

“I don’t know.””

“But she called me.””

“I know.””

“You know?””

Elena looked away.

Luciano noticed.

“You spoke to her.””

“No.””

“Mom.””

Her eyes filled.

“I haven’t spoken to Isabella in years.””

“But you knew she was alive.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Elena’s voice became quiet.

“Because I helped her disappear.””

Luciano felt the ground shift beneath him.

“You helped her?””

“Yes.””

“From who?””

Elena didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“Your father.””

The revelation changed everything.

Luciano had spent days believing Augusto wanted control.

Power.

The company.

The family reputation.

But this was different.

This was fear.

His father had spent years searching for Isabella.

Not because she threatened his position.

Because she carried proof.

Proof of what happened before Luciano was born.

Proof that could destroy the Valenti name.

Then why involve Celeste?

Why the staircase?

Why the recording?

The answer came slowly.

Because Luciano had gotten too close.

He had found the file.

He had discovered the past.

And Augusto needed to stop him.

But there was still one question.

Why did Dario attack Celeste?

Why create such a dangerous plan?

Luciano found Dario in the old training room beneath the mansion.

It was where the Valenti men practiced boxing when they were younger.

A place built on the idea that strength solved problems.

Dario was hitting a punching bag.

He stopped when Luciano entered.

“I wondered how long it would take you.””

Luciano closed the door.

“You knew about Isabella.””

Dario’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“Yes.””

“Who told you?””

“My father.””

“Why?””

Dario removed his gloves.

“Because he wanted me to understand what was at stake.””

Luciano stepped closer.

“And you still helped him.””

Dario looked away.

“I didn’t know what he planned.””

“You pushed my pregnant wife.””

“I know.””

The answer was quiet.

For the first time, Dario sounded like he hated himself.

Luciano noticed.

“You regret it.””

Dario laughed bitterly.

“Does that matter?””

“No.””

The honesty surprised him.

“No, it doesn’t.””

Dario nodded.

“Fair.””

Luciano stared at him.

“Tell me why.””

Dario looked up.

“Because my father told me you found something.””

“The file.””

“Yes.””

“And?””

“He said if you opened it, the entire family would collapse.””

Luciano’s eyes narrowed.

“So he wanted to scare me.””

“No.””

Dario shook his head.

“He wanted you to react.””

Again.

That word.

React.

Everything connected back to it.

“He wanted footage of me angry.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Dario looked at him.

“Because my father needed evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

Dario hesitated.

Then said:

“That you were unstable.””

Luciano went still.

Dario continued.

“He wanted the board to believe you were becoming dangerous.””

“For removal.””

“Yes.””

“But why the staircase?””

Dario looked down.

“Because he needed something emotional.””

Luciano’s voice hardened.

“My wife was a tool.””

Dario didn’t defend him.

“Yes.””

The admission hurt more than an excuse would have.

“My father knew you.””

Dario continued.

“He knew you would see Celeste hurt and forget everything else.””

Luciano looked away.

Because it was true.

The scariest part was not that Augusto knew his son.

It was that he knew him perfectly.

Later that evening, Marcus uncovered another piece of information.

He called Luciano immediately.

“We found the original camera file.””

Luciano stood.

“Where?””

“Hidden server storage.””

“Who stored it?””

A pause.

“Your mother.””

Luciano froze.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“We don’t know.””

Marcus sounded uneasy.

“But there is something else.””

“What?””

“The file was not recorded during the reception.””

Luciano frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“The camera footage.””

A pause.

“It started six months earlier.””

The room became silent.

“Six months?””

“Yes.””

Luciano remembered the surveillance contract.

The secret monitoring.

The date.

Everything began six months earlier.

“Send me the footage.””

“I already did.””

Luciano opened the file.

The video showed the same staircase.

The same hidden camera angle.

But not the reception.

Different days.

Different moments.

People walking through the mansion.

Employees.

Guests.

Family members.

Then one night, the camera captured something.

Augusto entering the staircase area.

Holding a document.

He was not alone.

The second person stepped into view.

Luciano stopped the video.

Because he recognized the face.

It was the same woman from the photograph.

The woman who was supposed to be dead.

Isabella.

And she was not hiding from Augusto.

She was meeting him.

Luciano watched as they spoke.

The audio was faint.

But one sentence was clear.

Isabella looked at Augusto and said:

“You can’t erase what you did to my father.””

Augusto replied:

“And you can’t save Luciano from knowing what you are.””

The video ended.

Luciano sat frozen.

Because the truth was becoming more complicated.

Isabella was alive.

She had evidence.

She had confronted Augusto.

But she had also been meeting him secretly.

Then his phone received another message.

From Isabella.

One sentence.

*Your father is not the only person who built a lie around you.*

A second message arrived.

A photograph.

Luciano opened it.

It showed his mother.

Elena.

Standing beside Isabella.

Taken yesterday.

After Elena told him she had not spoken to her sister in years.

Luciano stared at the image.

And for the first time, he wondered if the trap around him had started long before the staircase.

May you like

Maybe Celeste’s fall was only the moment everything finally broke open.

Maybe the real betrayal began the day he was born.
