Chapter 2: The Trap They Built

The room went silent.

Not the ordinary silence that followed an argument.

Not the uncomfortable silence of wealthy guests pretending they had not heard something ugly.

This was the silence of people realizing they had just witnessed a secret being exposed.

Nora’s hand tightened around the phone.

The recording continued playing.

Dario’s voice came through the speaker again.

“I need Luciano to react.””

A few guests exchanged confused looks.

Luciano did not move.

He stood in the center of the marble hall, staring at the device as if it had become the only thing keeping him upright.

His wife was still on the floor.

His unborn child was still at risk.

And yet, the thing that made his blood turn cold was not the fall.

It was the conversation that happened before it.

Because Dario had known.

He had known Luciano would arrive.

He had known Luciano would see Celeste hurt.

He had known exactly what kind of man his brother would become in that moment.

A protective husband.

An angry husband.

A husband pushed to the edge.

“Play it again,” Luciano said quietly.

Nobody spoke.

Nora looked at him.

“Luciano…”

“Play it again.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Nora pressed the screen.

The recording rewound.

The guests listened.

Again.

Dario’s voice.

“I need him angry enough to lose control.””

Then Augusto.

“Make sure the camera catches everything.””

This time, nobody looked confused.

Everyone understood.

The camera was not there to record the fall.

The fall was just the beginning.

“Father.””

Luciano finally turned.

Augusto Valenti stood near the staircase, his expression carefully controlled again.

The same expression he wore during business meetings.

The same expression he used whenever he believed emotions were weaknesses.

“Explain.””

Augusto looked around at the guests.

“This is not the place.””

Luciano laughed once.

A cold, humorless sound.

“You mean not in front of witnesses?””

A few people lowered their eyes.

Augusto’s jaw tightened.

“Your wife needs medical attention.””

“She needed help when she was falling.””

The words hit harder than a shout.

Celeste, still conscious but weak, looked toward Augusto.

The pain in her eyes was not only physical.

She had spent years trying to earn a place in the Valenti family.

She had attended dinners.

Celebrations.

Charity events.

She had smiled beside people who never truly accepted her.

But tonight, she had learned something.

They were not simply cold.

They were capable of watching.

Dario stepped forward.

“You’re making a mistake.””

Luciano looked at him.

“A mistake?””

“Yes.””

Dario pointed toward the phone.

“You think that recording proves everything?””

Nora frowned.

“It literally records you planning this.””

Dario smiled.

“No. It records me talking.””

Everyone stared at him.

He continued.

“You don’t know what happened after that conversation. You don’t know what I meant.””

Luciano’s eyes narrowed.

“You think anyone believes that?””

Dario shrugged.

“I think everyone here knows you.””

A strange confidence filled his voice.

“You’ve always been the same, Luciano.””

He stepped closer.

“You get angry first. You think later.””

The guests became uncomfortable.

Because Dario was no longer defending himself.

He was provoking him.

Luciano noticed.

And for the first time since seeing Celeste at the bottom of the stairs, he forced himself to look beyond his anger.

Dario wanted him emotional.

Why?

Why record it?

Why create evidence before the attack?

Why involve their father?

A terrible possibility entered his mind.

This was never about hurting Celeste.

Celeste was the bait.

He was the target.

The ambulance arrived twenty minutes later.

The guests slowly left the mansion, whispering behind their hands.

By midnight, the grand reception hall that had been filled with music was empty.

Only family remained.

Luciano refused to leave Celeste’s side until the doctors confirmed their baby was safe.

The doctor finally stepped out.

“The baby is stable.””

Luciano closed his eyes.

A breath he didn’t realize he was holding escaped.

“But your wife needs rest,” the doctor continued.

“The fall caused significant stress. She should avoid any emotional shock.””

Luciano nodded.

“Thank you.””

After the doctor left, he entered the private room.

Celeste was awake.

Pale.

Exhausted.

But alive.

Luciano sat beside her.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

Then Celeste whispered.

“I’m sorry.””

His face immediately changed.

“For what?””

“For bringing you into this family.””

Luciano looked at her like she had said something impossible.

“Never say that.””

“But if I hadn’t married you—”

“Stop.””

His voice softened.

“You are the best thing that ever happened to me.””

Celeste looked away.

“Your brother wanted something from you.””

“I know.””

“He wanted you angry.””

Luciano nodded slowly.

“I know.””

“And your father…”

She couldn’t finish.

Luciano understood.

His father had not pushed her.

But he had watched.

And somehow, that hurt almost as much.

“I saw him,” Celeste whispered.

Luciano looked at her.

“Saw who?””

“Your father.””

Her fingers gripped the blanket.

“When Dario grabbed me, I looked toward the hallway.””

A pause.

“He was there.””

Luciano said nothing.

“He saw everything.””

The room felt colder.

“He could have stopped him.””

Luciano lowered his head.

For years, he had believed his father was ruthless.

Demanding.

Difficult.

But family was different.

Or at least he thought it was.

Now he wasn’t sure.

Across the mansion, Dario stood in his father’s office.

The room smelled like old leather and expensive whiskey.

Augusto closed the door.

“You failed.””

Dario turned sharply.

“I failed?””

“Yes.””

“He’s angry.””

“That was not enough.””

Dario laughed.

“He almost hit me.””

“But he didn’t.””

Augusto walked toward the desk.

“That was the entire point.””

Dario’s smile faded.

“You said he would lose control.””

“I said he was likely to.””

“And he didn’t.””

Augusto looked at him.

“Because something changed.””

Dario frowned.

“What?””

“Luciano started thinking.””

The words irritated Dario.

“He’s always been emotional.””

“No.””

Augusto’s voice was quiet.

“He was always loyal. There is a difference.””

Dario poured himself a drink.

“So what now?””

Augusto stared out the window.

The mansion grounds were dark.

Empty.

Except for the security lights.

“We continue.””

Dario looked surprised.

“Continue?””

“Yes.””

“The video is ruined.””

Augusto turned.

“No.””

His expression became unreadable.

“The video did exactly what we needed.””

Dario frowned.

“But he didn’t attack me.””

“Not yet.””

A long silence followed.

Then Dario understood.

The recording was never only about capturing Luciano hitting him.

It was about creating suspicion.

Creating pressure.

Creating a story.

A story where Luciano looked dangerous.

A story where Augusto could control the outcome.

Dario smiled slowly.

“So we make him finish the performance.””

Augusto did not answer.

He didn’t need to.

The next morning, Luciano learned how dangerous the recording truly was.

He was sitting in the hospital waiting area when his lawyer called.

“Luciano, you need to come home.””

“Why?””

A pause.

“Because someone sent the police a copy of the footage.””

Luciano stood immediately.

“What footage?””

“The recording from the mansion.””

His stomach tightened.

“But that proves Dario attacked Celeste.””

Another silence.

Then his lawyer spoke carefully.

“Not the entire recording.””

Luciano froze.

“What do you mean?””

“The clip they sent begins later.””

“After the conversation?””

“Yes.””

The world seemed to slow.

“They removed the first part.””

His lawyer continued.

“The authorities received footage showing you confronting Dario, shouting, and threatening him.””

Luciano looked through the hospital window toward Celeste’s room.

The trap was closing.

They had not only planned to hurt his wife.

They had planned to rewrite what happened afterward.

“Who sent it?””

His lawyer hesitated.

“We don’t know.””

Luciano’s hand tightened around the phone.

But he already knew.

Only one person had the power to change the story.

Only one person had been standing there before anyone else.

His father.

Then his phone received a message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

*You should have protected your wife better.*

Luciano stared at the screen.

A second message appeared.

*Now everyone will see what kind of man you really are.*

He looked up slowly.

Because suddenly he understood something worse than the betrayal.

Dario and Augusto had never been trying to hide what they did.

They wanted him to discover it.

They wanted him furious.

They wanted him desperate.

Because somewhere inside the missing footage was the one thing they feared.

May you like

The truth they could not allow anyone to see.

And Luciano was about to find out exactly what they had erased.
