Chapter 1: The Staircase
“Don’t touch me!””
Celeste’s voice cut through the music, the laughter, and the clinking crystal glasses of the graduation reception like a glass breaking in a silent room.
Three seconds later, she was falling.
The marble staircase of the Valenti mansion seemed to stretch forever beneath her. Her hand reached for the golden railing, but her fingers caught only air. Her white dress twisted around her as she fell, one step after another, until the entire world became a blur of pain, fear, and the sound of dozens of people screaming.
The smartphone hidden beside the floral arrangement at the bottom of the staircase kept recording.
It captured everything.
The fall.
The silence afterward.
And the truth that nobody in the room was ready to hear.
Celeste had always hated large family gatherings at the Valenti mansion.
They looked beautiful from the outside.
A century-old estate overlooking the ocean. Marble floors imported from Italy. Chandeliers that belonged in museums. Gardens filled with roses that seemed untouched by storms.
But behind those walls, every smile had a meaning.
Every compliment had a hidden blade.
And every family dinner felt like a battlefield where nobody admitted they were fighting.
That evening was supposed to be different.
It was supposed to be a celebration.
Her husband, Luciano Valenti, had just completed his final business certification, and his younger brother Dario had finished his graduate program as well. Their father, Augusto Valenti, had invited investors, relatives, and close friends to celebrate the achievements of both sons.
Celeste had spent hours preparing.
Not because she cared about impressing the Valenti family.
Because she cared about Luciano.
She remembered standing in front of the mirror that afternoon, placing a hand over her seven-month pregnant belly.
“You’re going to survive one fancy family party, aren’t you?”” she whispered to the baby.
She smiled at her reflection.
“I survived marrying your father’s family. That has to count for something.””
Luciano had walked into the room wearing a dark suit, his tie slightly crooked.
He always looked intimidating to strangers.
Tall. Serious. Impossible to read.
But Celeste knew the man behind the expression.
He was the man who warmed her cold hands between his during winter walks.
The man who secretly bought her favorite pastries even after she told him she was trying to eat healthier.
The man who placed his hand on her stomach every night and talked to their unborn child like the baby could already understand him.
“You’re making jokes with our child again?”” Luciano asked.
Celeste turned around.
“You’re jealous because the baby listens to me more.””
Luciano smiled faintly.
“That’s because the baby doesn’t know you’re stubborn yet.””
She walked closer and fixed his tie.
“And you do?””
“I married you. I know everything.””
She laughed.
For a moment, everything felt safe.
That was the dangerous part.
Because Celeste had learned something about the Valenti family.
The calm moments never lasted.
The first warning came when Dario approached her near the reception hall.
He held a glass of champagne in one hand and wore the same confident smile he used whenever he wanted to provoke someone.
Dario was three years younger than Luciano, but he spent his entire life trying to prove he was the superior brother.
He adjusted his jacket and looked at Celeste’s stomach.
“Still carrying the heir, I see.””
Celeste’s smile disappeared.
“Still making comments you think are clever, I see.””
Dario laughed softly.
“Careful. Pregnancy hasn’t made you nicer.””
“No,” Celeste replied.
“It just made me less patient.””
His smile tightened.
A few guests nearby noticed the tension and quickly looked away.
Nobody in the Valenti family liked being caught watching an argument.
Dario stepped closer.
“You know what’s funny, Celeste?””
“What?””
“My brother thinks he’s protecting you.””
Celeste stared at him.
“He is.””
Dario tilted his head.
“Is he?””
The question felt strange.
Not because of the words.
Because of the way he said them.
Like he knew something she didn’t.
Before Celeste could answer, Luciano appeared beside her.
“Is there a problem?””
Dario looked at his older brother and smiled.
“Relax. We were just talking.””
Luciano placed a protective hand around Celeste’s waist.
“You don’t talk to my wife like that.””
Dario raised his eyebrows.
“Your wife?””
A small laugh escaped him.
“That’s the problem with you, Luciano. You think everything belongs to you.””
The room around them seemed colder.
Luciano’s expression changed.
“Choose your next words carefully.””
Augusto Valenti stood across the room, watching.
Celeste noticed him.
That was what bothered her most.
Not Dario’s arrogance.
Not his insults.
His father’s silence.
Augusto had heard every word.
And he did nothing.
An hour later, Celeste stepped away from the reception.
She needed air.
The mansion had become too crowded, too loud.
She walked toward the staircase, one hand resting on her belly.
Behind her, she heard footsteps.
“Leaving already?””
She stopped.
Dario.
Again.
Celeste closed her eyes briefly.
“Dario, I’m not interested in another argument.””
“Neither am I.””
“Then why are you following me?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he glanced toward the floral arrangement near the bottom of the stairs.
For the smallest moment, Celeste saw something in his eyes.
Not anger.
Not jealousy.
Planning.
“What are you doing?”” she asked.
Dario looked back at her.
“What makes you think I’m doing anything?””
“Because you look like someone waiting for something.””
His smile returned.
“You always think you’re smarter than everyone.””
“And you always think you’re more important than everyone.””
The air between them became heavy.
Then Dario stepped closer.
“You know what Luciano’s biggest weakness is?””
Celeste moved back.
“Don’t.””
“His heart.””
She frowned.
“What?””
“He cares too much.””
Dario’s voice lowered.
“And people like that are easy to control.””
Celeste felt a chill move through her.
“Luciano would never let you hurt me.””
Dario looked toward the hallway.
Toward the guests.
Toward the people who could see them.
Then he looked back at her.
“I know.””
The answer was wrong.
It was too calm.
Celeste turned to leave.
That was when Dario grabbed her arm.
“Wait.””
“Let go.””
“Listen to me.””
“Let go of me.””
Her voice rose.
Several people turned.
Dario’s grip tightened.
Celeste pushed his hand away.
And then everything happened too fast.
His expression changed.
His hand moved.
A force struck her shoulder.
The world tilted.
For one impossible second, Celeste saw Dario’s face.
Not surprised.
Not angry.
Ready.
Then she fell.
Luciano arrived less than a minute later.
He had been searching for Celeste after noticing she had disappeared.
He heard the scream from the main hall.
Then he saw the crowd gathered around the staircase.
His heart stopped.
“Celeste!””
He pushed through everyone.
She was lying at the bottom of the stairs, one hand protectively covering her stomach.
Blood.
White marble.
People whispering.
Luciano dropped to his knees beside her.
“Look at me. Celeste, look at me.””
Her eyes opened slightly.
“Luciano…”
“I’m here.””
“My baby…”
“The baby is okay. Stay with me.””
But then Celeste’s shaking hand pointed upward.
Luciano looked.
And saw Dario standing on the staircase.
Watching.
A slow smile appeared on his brother’s face.
“I didn’t push her.””
The room went silent.
Luciano stood.
“What did you say?””
Dario walked down a few steps.
“I said I didn’t push her.””
Several guests stepped back.
They knew that tone.
The tone of someone who wanted a fight.
Luciano’s fists clenched.
“You touched my wife.””
Dario spread his arms.
“Are you going to hit me in front of everyone?””
Luciano stared at him.
Something felt wrong.
The anger inside him was real.
The fear was real.
But Dario looked too confident.
Like this moment was exactly what he wanted.
Then Augusto finally moved.
Not toward Celeste.
Not toward his injured daughter-in-law.
Toward the phone beside the flowers.
Nora, Celeste’s closest friend, noticed immediately.
“Why are you going for that phone?””
Augusto stopped.
For the first time that night, his calm expression broke.
“Give it to me.””
Nora picked it up.
“Why?””
The screen was still recording.
The timer showed something impossible.
The video had started several minutes before Celeste ever reached the staircase.
Nora looked at Luciano.
Then at Dario.
Then at Augusto.
“Who turned this on?””
Nobody answered.
And when Nora pressed play, the first sound from the recording made every person in the room freeze.
It wasn’t Celeste screaming.
It wasn’t the fall.
It was Dario’s voice.
Speaking to someone before Celeste had even arrived.
“I need him angry enough to lose control.””
A pause.
Then Augusto’s voice replied.
“Make sure the camera catches everything.””
Luciano stopped breathing.
The phone trembled in Nora’s hand.
May you like
Because suddenly the question was no longer who pushed Celeste.
The real question was why someone had been recording before she ever touched the stairs.
