Chapter 1: The Money on the Table
The sound of my wife slapping my sixteen-year-old son echoed through our marble foyer.
“THIEF! TELL ME WHERE YOU GOT THIS MONEY!””
I had just stepped out of my upstairs office when I heard the impact.
Then came my son's desperate cry.
“I DIDN'T STEAL ANYTHING!””
I ran toward the staircase.
What I saw at the bottom nearly stopped my heart.
Malik stood beside our dark wooden foyer table, one hand pressed against his reddened cheek. His charcoal hoodie was wrinkled, his short curls damp with sweat, and tears streamed down his face.
Across the table lay several thick stacks of hundred-dollar bills.
My wife, Vanessa, stood inches from him in a glamorous red dress. Her long black hair fell over her shoulders, and her manicured fingers rested against the edge of the table.
She looked furious.
My son looked terrified.
“WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?””
I rushed between them.
Vanessa stepped backward.
“Marcus, your son has been stealing!””
I turned toward Malik.
“Baby, are you okay?””
He nodded, but his trembling hands told a different story.
I gently touched his shoulder.
“Did she hit you?””
His eyes filled again.
“Yes, Dad.””
My chest tightened.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Why did you put your hands on my son?””
She pointed toward the table.
“Look at that money!””
I glanced at the stacks.
There had to be several thousand dollars.
Maybe more.
“Where did it come from?””
“That's what I've been asking him!””
Malik shook his head.
“Dad, I didn't steal anything.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Of course you're going to say that.””
I raised my hand.
“Let him speak.””
She stared at me.
“Marcus, don't be ridiculous. You're letting him play you.””
I turned toward Malik.
“Tell me what happened.””
His lower lip trembled.
“I came downstairs to get my backpack.””
“And?””
“She was standing beside the table. Then she started yelling that I stole her money.””
Vanessa interrupted.
“Because you did!””
Malik flinched.
I stepped closer to him.
“Don't look at her. Look at me.””
He raised his eyes.
“I swear, Dad. She put that money there.””
The room became silent.
Vanessa's face hardened.
“He's lying.””
I looked at her.
“Then how did you know he had the money?””
She hesitated.
“What?””
“You said you caught him. Where did you catch him?””
“Near his room.””
Malik began crying harder.
“No, Dad. She was already holding the money when I came downstairs.””
Vanessa stepped toward him.
“You little liar!””
I immediately moved between them.
“Back up.””
She stopped.
“Marcus!””
“Don't threaten him.””
Her eyes widened.
“You're taking his side?””
“I'm listening to my son.””
She let out a sharp laugh.
“Your son has been lying to you for months.””
My stomach tightened.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa folded her arms.
“He sneaks around. Hides things. Acts innocent whenever you're home.””
I turned toward Malik.
His face had gone pale.
“Baby?””
He looked at me.
“She's been saying that about me since she moved in.””
My heart sank.
Vanessa and I had been married for two years.
Malik's mother, Danielle, had died when he was eleven.
After losing her, my son struggled.
He stopped playing basketball for a while. His grades dropped. He barely spoke at family dinners.
I spent months helping him find his way back.
When Vanessa entered our lives, she seemed kind.
Patient.
Understanding.
She brought Malik small gifts, attended his school events, and told me she wanted to help us become a family.
I believed her.
But lately, Malik had become quiet again.
He stopped inviting friends over.
He spent more time in his room.
Whenever I asked what was wrong, he told me he was tired.
I thought it was normal teenage behavior.
Now I wasn't so sure.
“Why would Malik steal money?”” I asked.
Vanessa shrugged.
“Teenagers do stupid things.””
“That's not an answer.””
“He probably wants expensive sneakers or something.””
Malik stared at her.
“I haven't bought anything!””
Vanessa pointed at him.
“See? Always arguing!””
I took a slow breath.
Then my eyes moved toward the ceiling.
A small security camera sat above the foyer.
I had installed it after someone stole a package from our porch the previous year.
The camera recorded the front entrance, the marble foyer, and most of the living room.
Including the table.
I looked back at Vanessa.
“Good. Then we don't have to argue.””
She frowned.
“What?””
“The footage will show exactly what happened.””
For one brief moment, her confidence disappeared.
Then she laughed nervously.
“Marcus, don't be ridiculous.””
I reached into my pocket.
“What's ridiculous?””
“Checking security cameras every time a teenager tells a story.””
I opened the security application.
Malik stood beside me.
He was still holding his cheek.
“Dad,” he whispered.
I looked at him.
“Yes?””
“Please believe me.””
My chest tightened.
“I want to understand what happened, son.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Marcus, this is humiliating.””
I stared at her.
“You slapped my child in front of our own front door.””
She looked away.
“And now you don't want me to check the camera?””
She reached toward my phone.
“Give me that.””
I moved it away.
“Why?””
“Because you're letting him manipulate you!””
I selected the recording menu.
The screen displayed several camera feeds.
Front Door.
Garage.
Living Room.
Foyer.
I tapped the foyer camera.
Vanessa suddenly grabbed my wrist.
“Marcus, stop!””
I pulled my hand free.
“Don't touch me.””
She stared at me.
Her breathing became shallow.
“Why are you afraid of the footage?”” I asked.
She said nothing.
I pressed play.
The recording began at 4:17 p.m.
For several seconds, nothing happened.
The foyer was empty.
Then Vanessa appeared.
She was wearing the same red dress.
She walked toward the table carrying a large black handbag.
She placed the handbag on a chair.
Then she looked directly at the camera.
My thumb stopped moving.
Vanessa had known the camera was there.
She walked out of view for almost a minute.
When she returned, she was carrying a thick envelope.
She placed it on the table and began removing bundles of cash.
Malik wasn't anywhere in the recording.
Not yet.
Vanessa leaned over the table, arranged the money, and checked her phone.
Then she walked toward the hallway.
Thirty seconds later, Malik appeared.
He came down the stairs, holding his backpack.
He stopped when he saw the money.
Vanessa suddenly emerged from the hallway.
Her mouth moved rapidly.
Even without sound, I could see her pointing at him.
Then she grabbed his backpack.
Malik tried to pull it back.
Vanessa shoved him.
He stumbled.
She raised her hand.
The recording showed the slap.
My stomach turned.
I paused the footage.
The room was silent.
Vanessa's face had lost its color.
I looked at her.
“You lied.””
She swallowed.
“Marcus, I can explain.””
“Explain what?””
She glanced toward Malik.
Then toward the phone.
Finally, she said something that made my blood run cold.
“You don't understand. I had to make him look guilty.””
I stared at her.
“Make him look guilty of what?””
Vanessa's eyes widened.
She realized what she had just admitted.
Before she could answer, my phone vibrated.
An incoming message appeared from an unfamiliar number.
*Marcus, don't let Vanessa delete that recording. The money on your table belongs to me. And your wife has been stealing from you for eleven months.*
I looked at Vanessa.
She whispered, “Who sent that?””
I didn't answer.
Because the message had included something else.
A photograph.
It showed Vanessa standing outside a bank.

Beside a man I had never seen before.
And his hand was resting on her stomach.
