Chapter 5: The Second Beneficiary

The email from Helen contained one attachment.

A scanned copy of Danielle's original will.

I opened it.

Richard stood beside me, reading over my shoulder.

The first few pages were familiar.

Danielle had divided her personal belongings, established Malik's education trust, and outlined arrangements for his future.

Then we reached page seven.

A separate inheritance provision.

I read the first sentence.

I leave the sum of five hundred thousand dollars to the person who helped protect my family when I was no longer able to do so.

I frowned.

“Who is that?””

Richard continued reading.

The name appeared beneath the paragraph.

*Evelyn Brooks.*

I stared at it.

“Evelyn?””

Richard nodded.

“The woman who contacted you.””

I scrolled farther.

There was a handwritten note attached to the document.

Evelyn knows what happened before my illness became public. She has my permission to share the truth with Marcus when necessary.

My chest tightened.

“What happened before Danielle got sick?””

Richard shook his head.

“We need to speak with Helen.””

I called her immediately.

She answered on the second ring.

“Marcus, I've been expecting your call.””

“Why didn't you tell me about the second beneficiary?””

“Because Danielle instructed me not to disclose it unless someone attempted to interfere with Malik's trust.””

“And now?””

“Now the condition has been met.””

I looked at the will.

“Why did Danielle leave Evelyn half a million dollars?””

Helen sighed.

“Because Evelyn helped her uncover something.””

“What?””

“A financial arrangement involving Vanessa.””

I closed my eyes.

“Tell me.””

Helen paused.

“Danielle discovered that Vanessa had been communicating with Daniel Collins while Vanessa was still presenting herself as a potential friend to your family.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“How did Danielle know?””

“She found messages. Financial records. And evidence that Vanessa had attempted to obtain information about your business.””

I stared at the screen.

“Why didn't Danielle tell me?””

“She wanted to speak with you, but she became seriously ill. She was worried about how you would react while she was undergoing treatment.””

“That doesn't make sense. She could have told me anything.””

“I know.””

Helen's voice softened.

“Danielle was afraid that if Vanessa realized she had been discovered, she would destroy the evidence.””

I looked at Malik.

He was sitting on the sofa, holding his mother's photograph.

“Did Danielle know Vanessa would marry me?””

“She suspected Vanessa might eventually try to get close to you.””

I gripped the phone.

“Then why didn't she leave me a warning?””

“She did.””

I went still.

“What?””

Helen continued.

“There's a letter in the estate file addressed to you. It was sealed separately from the other documents. Danielle instructed me to release it only if Vanessa attempted to access Malik's trust.””

I looked at Richard.

He nodded slowly.

“Can you send it?”” I asked.

“I can arrange for you to collect the original today. But Marcus, there's something else.””

“What?””

“The second beneficiary isn't just Evelyn.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Helen took a breath.

“Evelyn receives five hundred thousand dollars only if she fulfills the conditions Danielle established. One of those conditions is that she provide testimony and original records relating to Vanessa and Daniel's activities.””

“Testimony about what?””

“An attempted fraud scheme.””

I stared at the will.

Suddenly, the money on my foyer table made more sense.

Vanessa hadn't simply been stealing money.

She had been creating a story.

A story in which Malik was dishonest, unstable, and incapable of protecting his own inheritance.

She needed me to believe it.

She needed the evidence to look convincing.

And she needed my son to be frightened enough to stay silent.

My phone vibrated.

A message from Evelyn.

*I can come to your house tonight. I have the original records. But please don't let Vanessa know I'm involved.*

I replied.

*She's already coming here with Daniel.*

Evelyn called immediately.

“Marcus, listen to me. Don't let Daniel inside.””

“Why?””

“Because he knows what was in Danielle's original file.””

“What file?””

“The file that proves he was involved in the first attempt to access Malik's trust.””

I looked at Richard.

He was already shaking his head.

“Evelyn, can you come to my attorney's office instead?””

“Yes. But I need to tell you something first.””

“What?””

“Vanessa isn't the person who came up with this plan.””

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

“Daniel did.””

My stomach tightened.

“He convinced her to marry you.””

Silence.

“He told her that your business was worth more than she realized. He told her you had a complicated estate structure and that Danielle had probably left money behind.””

I looked at the will.

“Why would Vanessa agree to that?””

“Because Daniel promised her a share.””

“A share of what?””

“Everything she could get her hands on.””

The front doorbell rang.

I looked toward the foyer.

Richard stood up.

“Don't answer it.””

The bell rang again.

Then came a knock.

A man's voice followed.

“Marcus! Open the door!””

Daniel.

I walked toward the entrance.

Richard caught my arm.

“Let me handle this.””

I shook my head.

“No. I want to see his face.””

I opened the door but kept the security chain attached.

Vanessa stood outside.

Her red dress had been replaced by a cream-colored coat.

Daniel stood beside her, holding a leather briefcase.

He was the same man from the photograph.

Tall.

Expensively dressed.

Confident.

He looked at me and smiled.

“Marcus. We need to talk.””

I stared at him.

“About the money you stole?””

His smile disappeared.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Don't speak to him like that.””

I looked at her.

“You brought him into my house?””

“He's here to help us resolve this.””

Richard appeared behind me.

“I'm afraid that's not possible without legal representation.””

Daniel glanced at him.

“Richard Coleman.””

Richard didn't smile.

“Daniel Collins.””

The two men clearly knew each other.

I turned toward Richard.

“You know him?””

Richard nodded.

“Unfortunately.””

Daniel adjusted his cuff.

“I see you've been busy, Marcus.””

“Busy discovering that my wife has been stealing from me.””

Daniel chuckled.

“That's a serious accusation.””

“So is accusing a sixteen-year-old boy of theft.””

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

“Malik is not part of this conversation.””

“He became part of it when you slapped him.””

Daniel looked past me.

“Where is the boy?””

I stepped forward.

“Don't ask about my son.””

Daniel raised both hands.

“Easy. I'm just trying to understand the situation.””

Richard moved beside me.

“Then you should understand that all further communication will go through counsel.””

Daniel smiled again.

“Of course.””

He lifted the briefcase slightly.

“But before we leave, I have something for you.””

I didn't move.

“What?””

“A document.””

“What document?””

Daniel opened the briefcase.

He removed a thick folder.

Then he held it against the door.

“This is a copy of an agreement Danielle signed shortly before she died.””

My heart stopped.

Richard's expression changed.

“What agreement?””

Daniel looked directly at me.

“The one proving that Danielle transferred ownership of the family property before her death.””

I frowned.

“What family property?””

Daniel smiled.

“Your house, Marcus.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

He continued.

“According to this document, the house doesn't belong to you anymore.””

Vanessa stood behind him, watching me.

Her expression was no longer frightened.

She looked triumphant.

Daniel placed the folder on the narrow ledge beside the door.

“And there's one more thing.””

He leaned closer.

“Your wife isn't the only person who has a claim to this property.””

I looked at Richard.

He was staring at the document.

His face had gone pale.

“Marcus,” he said quietly.

“What?””

He turned the folder toward me.

At the bottom of the first page was a signature.

Danielle Reed.

And beneath it, the name of the new owner.

*Malik Reed.*

I stared.

My son owned the house?

Daniel laughed softly.

“Surprised?””

Richard examined the document again.

Then he looked at Daniel.

“This is a fraudulent copy.””

Daniel's smile faded.

“Excuse me?””

“Danielle never transferred ownership through this agreement. The property was placed in a protected trust.””

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

Richard's voice was cold.

“It means someone has altered a legitimate document to make it appear that Danielle signed away the property.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“That's impossible!””

Richard held up the paper.

“Then explain why the notary information belongs to a man who died two years before this document was supposedly signed.””

For the first time, Daniel had no immediate answer.

His fingers tightened around the briefcase.

Vanessa looked at him.

“Daniel?””

He ignored her.

Richard continued.

“And I would strongly advise you to leave before I contact the authorities.””

Daniel slowly closed the briefcase.

“You're making a mistake.””

“No,” Richard replied.

“I'm correcting one.””

Daniel looked at me.

“You have no idea what your wife has been through to keep this family together.””

I stared at him.

“My wife slapped my child, stole hundreds of thousands of dollars, and tried to take his inheritance.””

Daniel's face hardened.

“You should be careful, Marcus.””

“Is that a threat?””

He leaned closer.

“It's a warning.””

Then he stepped away from the door.

Vanessa didn't move.

She looked at me with something resembling hatred.

“You're going to regret choosing him over me.””

I looked toward the staircase.

Malik was standing at the top.

He had heard everything.

I turned back to Vanessa.

“I didn't choose him over you.””

She narrowed her eyes.

“I chose to protect my son from you.””

Her expression twisted.

Then she followed Daniel toward the driveway.

I closed the door.

Richard immediately called the police and requested a formal investigation into the alleged forged document.

But before he could finish, my phone rang.

It was Helen Parker.

“Marcus, I need you to come to my office immediately.””

“What happened?””

“I've received a message from Evelyn.””

“What did she say?””

Helen lowered her voice.

“She found the original document Daniel tried to copy.””

I gripped the phone.

“Where?””

“Inside a storage facility registered under Vanessa's name.””

“And?””

Helen paused.

“Marcus, the original document contains something Daniel deliberately removed from his version.””

“What?””

“The house isn't the only property Danielle placed in Malik's trust.””

I stared at Richard.

Helen continued.

“There's also a commercial building downtown, an investment portfolio, and a life insurance policy worth nearly four million dollars.””

My knees nearly gave out.

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“Danielle didn't leave Malik two million dollars.””

She took a breath.

“She left him almost eight million.””

And according to the original trust agreement, every person who had attempted to steal even one dollar from it could be held personally liable.

I looked toward the staircase.

Malik was still standing there.

For the first time that evening, he wasn't crying.

He was holding his mother's photograph against his chest.

And I realized that Vanessa and Daniel had made one enormous mistake.

They had spent months treating my son like an obstacle.
