Chapter 4: The Man Who Wanted My Son's Money

Richard drove us back to the house.

Neither of us spoke much during the journey.

Malik sat in the back seat, holding the sealed envelope from his mother.

He had read it twice.

Each time, he became quieter.

When we arrived, Richard placed his briefcase on the kitchen island.

“Marcus, I want you to listen carefully.””

I poured myself a glass of water.

“Go ahead.””

“Until we know exactly what Vanessa has done, don't transfer money, don't sign anything, and don't communicate with Daniel.””

I nodded.

“What about the three hundred thousand?””

“We'll investigate it.””

“And the trust?””

“We'll make sure it's protected.””

Malik sat at the kitchen table.

“Can I ask something?””

Richard turned toward him.

“Of course.””

“Can Vanessa take my money?””

Richard pulled out a chair.

“Not if we act properly.””

“But she keeps saying Dad's money belongs to her.””

Richard glanced at me.

“Marriage doesn't automatically give someone ownership of every asset belonging to another family member. And money held in a properly structured trust is subject to its own legal rules.””

Malik looked down.

“So she can't just take it?””

“Not without legal authority.””

My son nodded slowly.

Then he asked the question that hurt me most.

“Why does she hate me?””

Nobody answered immediately.

I sat beside him.

“I don't know, buddy.””

He rubbed his eyes.

“Did I do something wrong?””

“No.””

“Was I supposed to call her Mom?””

I felt my throat tighten.

“No, son. You never had to call anyone anything you weren't comfortable with.””

“She got mad when I didn't.””

Richard looked up.

“What do you mean?””

Malik shrugged.

“She said it made her feel like an outsider.””

I stared at him.

“When did she say that?””

“Last Christmas.””

I remembered that evening.

Vanessa had been upset because Malik gave her a card that simply said, Merry Christmas, Vanessa.

She had complained that he was being disrespectful.

I had told him to be more considerate.

I had told him to try harder.

Now those memories felt like stones in my stomach.

Richard closed his briefcase.

“Marcus, we need to establish a clear timeline. But first, I want to speak with Helen Parker.””

He called her from the kitchen.

The conversation lasted nearly twenty minutes.

When he finally hung up, his expression was grave.

“She confirmed everything.””

“What exactly?””

“Danielle established an irrevocable trust for Malik. She also included a condition regarding anyone attempting to interfere with his inheritance.””

“What condition?””

Richard hesitated.

“If someone attempts to manipulate Malik, threaten him, or obtain access to the trust through deception, the trustee has authority to request an immediate protective review.””

I looked at him.

“Meaning?””

“Meaning Vanessa could lose any opportunity to become involved with the trust.””

“She was never supposed to be involved.””

“Correct.””

I paced toward the window.

“Then why did she keep telling Malik he needed to sign something?””

Richard looked up.

“What?””

I turned.

“Malik, you said Vanessa asked you to sign papers.””

My son stiffened.

Richard leaned forward.

“What papers?””

Malik hesitated.

“Some school documents.””

“What kind?””

“She said they were about my college savings.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“When?””

“Last month.””

“Did you sign them?””

He shook his head.

“She said I was being difficult because I wanted to read them.””

Richard's expression changed.

“Do you remember where she put them?””

Malik nodded.

“In her office.””

Richard immediately called Helen again.

After explaining what Malik had said, Helen requested that we preserve any documents we could find.

I walked toward Vanessa's office.

It was a small room near the guest bedroom.

She used it to manage her personal affairs and charitable projects.

The door was locked.

I tried the handle.

Nothing.

Richard watched me.

“Do you have a key?””

“Not usually.””

I looked at the desk.

A small key ring sat inside a ceramic bowl near the hallway.

I recognized the silver key.

It opened the office.

Inside, the room smelled of expensive perfume.

A laptop sat on the desk.

Several folders were arranged neatly beside it.

I opened the top drawer.

Receipts.

Bank statements.

A few handwritten notes.

Then I found a folder labeled:

*MALIK — EDUCATIONAL AUTHORIZATION.*

I opened it.

The first document appeared harmless.

It was a request to update the contact information for Malik's educational trust.

The second document was different.

It was an authorization allowing Vanessa to act as Malik's financial representative.

The third document made my hands go cold.

It was a draft petition requesting that Malik's inheritance be placed under temporary adult administration.

The proposed administrator was Daniel Collins.

I read the name twice.

Then I saw the paragraph beneath it.

The minor beneficiary has demonstrated poor judgment, emotional instability, and repeated dishonesty regarding personal finances.

My eyes moved to the next page.

There were several examples.

A missing wallet.

An alleged theft of household money.

A disciplinary incident at school.

A statement claiming Malik had become increasingly aggressive toward Vanessa.

Every accusation was false.

And every one of them had been written to make my son appear incapable of managing his own affairs.

I turned toward Richard.

“This is a setup.””

He took the documents.

His face hardened.

“Marcus, don't touch anything else.””

I looked at the desk.

There was a photograph beneath the folder.

It showed Vanessa and Daniel sitting together at a restaurant.

On the back, someone had written:

*Once the boy is declared incapable, the trust becomes manageable.*

I felt sick.

Richard photographed the document.

Then he called Helen.

She asked him to read the exact wording.

When he finished, there was a long silence.

Finally, Helen spoke.

“Richard, I need you to understand something.””

“What?””

“Danielle anticipated this possibility.””

Richard looked at me.

“What possibility?””

“Before she died, Danielle asked me to prepare a separate document in case anyone tried to obtain control of Malik's trust through a false guardianship claim.””

I stepped closer.

“What document?””

“A protective declaration.””

“What does it do?””

“It identifies the people Danielle explicitly prohibited from exercising financial authority over Malik.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

Helen paused.

Then she said Vanessa's full name.

“And Daniel Collins.””

I stared at the wall.

Richard asked, “Is there anything else?””

“Yes.””

Helen lowered her voice.

“Danielle also left a recorded statement. It explains why she was so concerned about Vanessa.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Why?””

Another pause.

Then Helen said something I never expected.

“Because Vanessa had already approached Danielle about marrying you before Danielle became ill.””

I blinked.

“What?””

“Danielle believed Vanessa was interested in your family finances long before your wedding.””

I gripped the edge of the desk.

“Are you saying my wife knew about Danielle's inheritance before she married me?””

“I'm saying Danielle documented a conversation that strongly suggests it.””

I looked toward the doorway.

Malik was standing there.

He had heard everything.

“Dad?””

I turned.

He looked terrified.

“Did Mom know Vanessa before she died?””

I didn't know how to answer.

Then my phone rang.

The caller ID showed Vanessa.

I answered.

“Where are you?”” she demanded.

“At home.””

“I need you to listen to me.””

“I'm listening.””

Her voice became strangely calm.

“Daniel and I are coming over.””

I looked at Richard.

He shook his head.

I replied, “That's not a good idea.””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“You don't understand, Marcus. Daniel has something you need to see.””

“What?””

She paused.

Then she said:

“Your son isn't the only person Danielle left money to.””

The call ended.

Richard looked at me.

“What did she mean?””

I stared at my phone.

I didn't know.

But a few seconds later, an email arrived from Helen Parker.
