Chapter 1: The One Thing She Feared
“Daddy, please! Don't check the cameras!””
Vanessa's voice cracked across the backyard.
For the first time that evening, my younger sister wasn't pretending to be frightened.
She was terrified.
And I knew exactly why.
My father stood beneath the patio lights, his silver hair catching the warm glow. Behind him, nearly sixty guests had gathered around the swimming pool, their Halloween costumes suddenly forgotten.
My daughter, Lily, was wrapped in a towel against my chest.
Her little body was still trembling.
My cheek burned where Marcus had slapped me.
And my sister was desperately trying to prevent the one thing that could expose her.
The truth.
My father looked at Vanessa.
“Why shouldn't I check the cameras?””
Vanessa pressed one hand against her pregnant stomach.
“Daddy, I'm not saying that. I'm just saying Nia is upset. She's confused. We should take care of Lily first.””
“I've already asked someone to call an ambulance,” I replied.
Marcus turned toward me.
“Can you stop making everything about yourself for five minutes?””
I stared at him.
“Your daughter nearly drowned.””
“And you expect everyone to believe you had nothing to do with it?””
My father stepped between us.
“Marcus, lower your voice.””
For once, my husband obeyed.
My father turned toward the house.
“Evelyn!””
Mrs. Brooks appeared immediately.
“Yes, Mr. Bennett?””
“Take Nia and Lily into the guest suite. Get them dry clothes. Have someone bring the first-aid kit.
And call the security office. I want the footage from every camera overlooking this pool.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Daddy, please. You're making this into something it isn't.””
He looked at her.
“Then you have nothing to worry about.””
Her lips parted.
Nothing came out.
I followed Mrs. Brooks inside.
The moment the glass doors closed behind us, Lily began crying again.
“Mommy?””
I knelt beside her.
“I'm right here, sweetheart.””
“Did I do bad?””
My heart broke.
“No, baby. You didn't do anything bad.””
“Daddy mad?””
I swallowed.
“No. Daddy is just upset.””
It was the first lie I'd told my daughter that evening.
And I hated myself for it.
Mrs. Brooks brought a soft pink blanket and wrapped it around Lily's shoulders.
“Let's get these wet clothes off, sweetheart.””
Lily clung to my neck.
“I want Mommy.””
“You'll have Mommy,” Evelyn assured her.
A few minutes later, the paramedics arrived.
They checked Lily's breathing, oxygen levels, and temperature before recommending that she be taken to the hospital for further observation.
I didn't hesitate.
“I'm going with her.””
Marcus appeared in the doorway.
“I'm coming too.””
I looked at him.
He seemed surprised that I didn't immediately welcome him.
“She's my daughter,” he added.
“Yes,” I said.
“She is.””
He looked at the red mark on my cheek.
For a moment, something resembling regret crossed his face.
Then Vanessa appeared behind him.
“Marcus, I feel dizzy.””
He immediately turned.
“What's wrong?””
“I think all this stress is affecting the baby.””
I watched him abandon the doorway.
Again.
Mrs. Brooks shook her head quietly.
I carried Lily toward the ambulance.
Before stepping inside, I heard my father calling someone.
“Daniel, get me the original footage. Not a summary. I want the complete recording, including the thirty minutes before the incident.””
Then another voice interrupted.
It was Vanessa.
“Daddy, you can't do that!””
My father answered with a sentence I would remember for the rest of my life.
“Vanessa, I built this house. I know where every camera points.””
The ambulance doors closed.
At the hospital, Lily was examined and placed under observation.
The doctor assured me that she was stable, but he wanted to monitor her because she'd swallowed pool water and briefly struggled to breathe.
I sat beside her bed, holding her little hand.
She had fallen asleep with her favorite stuffed rabbit tucked beneath her chin.
My phone vibrated.
Marcus.
I stared at his name before answering.
“What?””
“Nia, where are you?””
“At the hospital. Where else would I be?””
“Don't start.””
I closed my eyes.
“Marcus, our daughter is in a hospital bed.””
“I know that.””
“Then why are you calling to argue?””
He exhaled sharply.
“Your father is making this situation worse. He's treating Vanessa like a criminal.””
I looked at Lily.
“Why are you more concerned about Vanessa than your daughter?””
“Because Vanessa is pregnant, and you're trying to destroy her!””
A cold feeling settled in my stomach.
“Destroy her?””
“She didn't mean to hurt anyone.””
I sat upright.
“What did you just say?””
There was silence.
Then he corrected himself.
“I mean, nobody knows exactly what happened.””
“That's what the cameras are for.””
“Nia, listen to me. Your father has always favored you. Don't let him turn this into some family investigation.””
I laughed once, without humor.
“Your wife was slapped in front of sixty people. Your daughter nearly drowned. And you're worried about a family investigation?””
“I'm trying to protect this family.””
“No, Marcus. You're trying to protect Vanessa.””
I ended the call.
A nurse entered a moment later to check Lily's monitor.
After she left, I opened my messages.
There was one from my father.
*Richard Bennett:* The security manager has the footage. Don't worry about anything tonight. Stay with Lily.
Then another message arrived.
It was from an unknown number.
*Unknown:* You need to know what Vanessa was doing before the party. Don't trust Marcus.
My stomach tightened.
I typed back.
*Me:* Who is this?
The response came almost immediately.
*Unknown:* Someone who has watched your sister lie to this family for years.
I stared at the screen.
Then a photograph appeared.
It showed Vanessa standing beside Marcus outside my father's estate.
But it wasn't from Halloween.
It was dated three weeks earlier.
Marcus had one hand resting on her waist.
And Vanessa was holding something in her other hand.
A document.
I zoomed in.
At the top, I could make out three words.
*BENNETT FAMILY TRUST.*
Before I could read anything else, another message arrived.
*Unknown:* Your sister didn't just want Lily out of the way tonight. She wanted something your father has been protecting for years.
I looked at the photograph again.
Then my phone rang.
It was my father.
“Nia,” he said, his voice unusually low.
“There's something you need to see.””
“What is it?””
He paused.
“Your sister didn't push Lily by accident.””
My blood ran cold.
“What did the footage show?””
My father took a breath.
“Come home when Lily's doctor releases her. There's something else on that recording. Something Marcus has been hiding from you.””
May you like
And then he said the words that changed everything.
“Your husband knew Vanessa was going to hurt your daughter.””
