Chapter 2: The Recording That Changed Everything
I didn't sleep that night.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Lily's little fingers slipping beneath the water.
I heard her calling for me.
And then I remembered Marcus's hand striking my face.
By six the next morning, Lily was awake and asking for pancakes.
The doctor was pleased with her condition. After another examination, he discharged her with instructions to watch for any unusual coughing, breathing difficulties, fever, or changes in behavior.
I dressed her in the pink outfit Mrs. Brooks had brought from home.
She looked so small.
Too small for the nightmare she'd survived.
“Mommy, can we go home?””
I kissed her forehead.
“Yes, baby.””
But I wasn't sure which home she meant.
Our house?
The estate where my father lived?
Or the life I'd believed I had before that Halloween party?
When we arrived at my father's estate, two security guards stood near the front entrance.
Inside, the house was unusually quiet.
The Halloween decorations were still everywhere. Orange lights illuminated the staircase. Fake cobwebs hung from the chandeliers.
But the party was over.
My father waited in his study.
He was sitting behind his massive oak desk, wearing the same dark shirt he'd worn the night before.
Beside him stood Daniel Price, the estate's security manager.
A large monitor displayed several camera recordings.
My father rose when he saw Lily.
“There's my girl.””
He took her gently into his arms.
“Grandpa!””
He kissed her cheek.
“You gave us quite a scare, sweetheart.””
Lily buried her face against his shoulder.
“I fell in the water.””
“I know, sweetheart.””
He looked at me.
His eyes became harder.
“Daniel, show us.””
Daniel pressed a button.
The first recording showed the backyard at 8:17 p.m.
Guests were moving between the buffet tables and the pool.
A few children were playing near the patio.
Then Vanessa entered the frame.
She was wearing the same cream-colored maternity dress.
She looked around before walking toward Lily.
My daughter stood near a table holding the little purple gift box.
I leaned closer.
“What is that?””
Daniel paused the video.
“The box Lily was carrying.””
My father frowned.
“Where did it come from?””
I shook my head.
“I thought it was a party favor.””
Daniel resumed the footage.
Vanessa crouched in front of Lily.
She smiled and pointed toward the pool.
Lily shook her head.
Vanessa extended her hand.
My daughter took one step backward.
Then Vanessa grabbed Lily's wrist.
I felt my stomach turn.
“Stop it.””
Daniel paused the recording.
My father looked at me.
“Nia?””
“Please don't make me watch her fall again.””
He nodded.
“Daniel, skip to the next angle.””
The next camera showed the pool from above.
It captured Vanessa moving behind Lily.
She glanced toward the patio doors.
Then she placed both hands against my daughter's shoulders.
I stopped breathing.
Vanessa pushed.
Not accidentally.
Not because she lost her balance.
She deliberately shoved my two-year-old daughter toward the swimming pool.
Lily stumbled forward.
Her little shoes slipped.
Then she disappeared into the water.
My hand flew to my mouth.
My father stood completely still.
Daniel looked down.
And then the recording continued.
Vanessa stepped backward.
She didn't scream.
She didn't reach for Lily.
She didn't call for help.
Instead, she looked toward the patio doors.
She waited.
Three seconds.
Five.
Seven.
Then I appeared on camera, running toward the pool.
I jumped in and pulled Lily out.
And only after I reached the edge did Vanessa begin screaming.
“She pushed her!””
My father shut his eyes.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then he turned to Daniel.
“Save that recording in three separate locations. Give one copy to the police. Nobody edits anything.””
“Yes, sir.””
I wiped my cheeks.
“There's more, isn't there?””
Daniel hesitated.
My father looked at him.
“Show her.””
The next recording came from a camera overlooking the side entrance.
It showed Marcus arriving at the estate approximately twenty minutes before the party began.
He wasn't alone.
Vanessa was standing beside him.
They spoke near his car.
The camera had no audio, but their body language was unmistakable.
Vanessa handed him an envelope.
Marcus opened it.
He examined the contents.
Then he placed the envelope inside his jacket.
I stared at the screen.
“What was in that envelope?””
Daniel answered carefully.
“We don't know yet.””
The recording continued.
Marcus leaned toward Vanessa.
She touched his arm.
Then he kissed her forehead.
I felt something inside me crack.
My father looked at me.
“Nia, I need to ask you something.””
“What?””
“Have you ever suspected that Marcus and Vanessa were involved?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
But the word came out weak.
There had been things.
Little things I'd dismissed.
Marcus leaving family dinners whenever Vanessa called.
Vanessa knowing details about our marriage that I'd never shared with her.
The way Marcus became defensive whenever I questioned her.
I had called it closeness.
Family loyalty.
Perhaps I had simply been blind.
My father pulled out a chair.
“Sit down.””
I remained standing.
“I want to know why she did this.””
He nodded toward Daniel.
“There's another file.””
Daniel opened a document on his laptop.
It was a scanned copy of a legal agreement.
The heading read:
*BENNETT FAMILY TRUST — BENEFICIARY DESIGNATION AND SUCCESSION AGREEMENT.*
I frowned.
“What does this have to do with Lily?””
My father leaned back.
“Everything.””
He explained that years earlier, when I was twenty-five, he had established a trust to protect the family business and provide financial security for his grandchildren.
The trust held several properties, investment accounts, and shares in Bennett Construction Group.
Lily was listed as a protected beneficiary.
My father had made arrangements for her inheritance to remain untouched until she reached adulthood.
Vanessa, meanwhile, had been given a separate inheritance.
But there was a condition.
If I died or became legally incapacitated before Lily reached adulthood, certain trustees would gain control over the assets assigned to her.
One of those proposed trustees was Vanessa.
I stared at him.
“Why would you ever make her responsible for Lily's inheritance?””
“I didn't.””
He tapped the document.
“This is an amended draft. It was never approved.””
I looked at the signature section.
There was my father's name.
Or something that looked like it.
“Someone forged your signature?””
He nodded slowly.
“That's what it appears to be.””
I looked at the date.
The amendment had been prepared six weeks earlier.
My stomach twisted.
“Who requested it?””
My father didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he opened another document.
A printed email.
The sender was Marcus.
The recipient was Vanessa.
The subject line read:
*THE TRUST — NEXT STEPS.*
I read the first paragraph.
Then the second.
My hands began shaking.
Marcus had written that I was becoming an obstacle.
He suggested that Vanessa should become more involved in family matters and that my father could be persuaded to change the trust if I appeared unstable.
Then I saw one sentence.
Once Nia is no longer in a position to make decisions for Lily, everything becomes easier.
I looked at my father.
“What does that mean?””
His face was pale.
“I don't know yet.””
I read the sentence again.
Then I noticed the date.
It was sent two days before Lily's second birthday.
I remembered that day.
Marcus had taken me out for dinner.
Vanessa had offered to babysit Lily.
She'd insisted she wanted to spend time with her niece.
And I'd trusted her.
I closed the laptop.
“Where is Marcus now?””
My father answered.
“He's at the house with Vanessa.””
I picked up my phone.
There were twelve missed calls.
All from Marcus.
One message stood out.
*Marcus:* We need to talk before your father gets into your head. Come home alone.
I showed it to my father.
He read it twice.
Then he shook his head.
“You're not going anywhere alone.””
I looked toward the hallway where Lily was playing with Mrs. Brooks.
For the first time, I understood that the danger hadn't ended when I pulled my daughter out of the pool.
Someone had planned something.
Someone had involved my husband.
And someone was still waiting for me to make the next mistake.
Then Daniel's phone rang.
He answered, listened, and looked at my father.
“Sir, the police are here.””
My father stood.
“Good.””
Daniel swallowed.
“They're not here about Vanessa.””
May you like
He glanced at me.
“They're here because Marcus has filed a complaint accusing Nia of attempted murder.””
