Chapter 5: The Mother Who Knew Everything
For years, I had believed my mother was the only person in our family who would never betray me.
I was wrong.
The rear entrance opened at 11:42 a.m.
Marcus walked inside carrying his expensive leather briefcase.
My mother followed him.
She wore a navy coat and a pearl necklace I'd given her for her sixtieth birthday.
She looked perfectly ordinary.
Like a woman visiting her daughter's home.
Except she was carrying stolen documents.
My father stood at the bottom of the staircase.
“Eleanor.””
My mother stopped.
“Richard.””
“What are you doing here?””
She glanced at me.
“I came to help.””
I almost laughed.
“Help who?””
She ignored me and placed the brown folder on the console table.
“Richard, we need to talk privately.””
My father shook his head.
“There will be no private conversations.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“This is getting out of control.””
I stared at him.
“You stole my father's documents.””
“I was protecting the family.””
“From what?””
He looked at my mother.
She gave him a small nod.
I felt sick.
My mother knew.
She had known.
“Mom,” I said quietly.
“Tell me you didn't know about the pool.””
She looked at me.
For a moment, I thought she might finally tell the truth.
Instead, she sighed.
“Nia, sometimes people make mistakes.””
My mouth fell open.
“A mistake?””
“Vanessa is pregnant. She's under pressure. You know how emotional she's been.””
“She pushed Lily into a swimming pool.””
“She didn't intend for it to happen like that.””
I stared at her.
“How do you know what she intended?””
My mother looked away.
That was my answer.
My father moved closer.
“Eleanor, what did you know?””
She clasped her hands.
“I knew Vanessa and Marcus were having problems.””
“That's not what I asked.””
She looked at him.
“I knew they were trying to change some financial arrangements.””
“Did you know they were forging documents?””
My mother remained silent.
My father shook his head.
“Unbelievable.””
Marcus interrupted.
“Can we stop acting like this is some criminal conspiracy? The trust documents are complicated. We were trying to simplify things.””
I stepped toward him.
“You used my signature without permission.””
He looked at me.
“You signed the paperwork.””
“I never signed a guardianship agreement giving Vanessa control over Lily.””
“You don't remember every document you sign.””
The cruelty of his answer took my breath away.
My mother moved closer.
“Nia, listen to me. Marcus is still your husband. You have a child together. You should think about what happens if this becomes public.””
I looked at her.
“Are you worried about Lily?””
“Of course I am.””
“Then why are you protecting the people who tried to hurt her?””
She shook her head.
“Nobody tried to hurt her.””
I pointed toward the security monitor.
“Watch the recording.””
My mother refused.
“I don't need to watch anything.””
“Why?””
“Because I know Vanessa.””
I felt something break inside me.
“You know Vanessa better than you know me?””
My mother lowered her voice.
“Your sister has always struggled.””
I stared at her.
“What does that have to do with my daughter?””
“She has always felt that you had everything.””
I looked at Marcus.
Then my mother.
Then the folder.
And suddenly, I understood that this wasn't only about money.
It was about resentment.
For years, my mother had treated Vanessa as the fragile one.
The one who needed extra attention.
The one who couldn't handle disappointment.
When I received a scholarship, my mother reminded me that Vanessa had worked hard too.
When I bought my first house, she asked whether I could help Vanessa with her rent.
When I married Marcus, she spent months worrying that Vanessa felt left behind.
I had never complained.
I had never wanted my sister to feel less loved.
But apparently, everything I achieved had become evidence against me.
My father opened the folder.
Inside were photocopies of trust agreements, bank letters, and a handwritten list of account numbers.
He looked at my mother.
“Where did you get these?””
She hesitated.
“Vanessa gave them to me.””
“And why were you carrying them?””
“Because Marcus asked me to keep them safe.””
My father looked at Marcus.
“Safe from whom?””
Marcus clenched his jaw.
“Richard, you need to calm down.””
My father stepped closer.
“Don't tell me to calm down in my own house.””
Marcus raised his hands.
“I'm trying to prevent this family from destroying itself.””
I laughed.
“You hit me. You accused me of trying to kill our daughter. And now you're pretending you're the victim?””
Marcus looked at me.
“I lost my temper.””
“You didn't lose your temper. You chose to hit me.””
He looked away.
My mother stepped between us.
“Enough. Both of you.””
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
“Mom, he hit me in front of sixty people.””
“I know.””
“And you still brought him here?””
She looked down.
“Because he said he could fix this.””
I stared at her.
“What exactly did he promise you?””
She didn't answer.
My father turned toward her.
“Eleanor, tell us the truth.””
She looked at him.
Then at Marcus.
Finally, she whispered:
“He promised that Vanessa would receive the house in Savannah.””
My father went still.
“What house?””
“The property near the coast.””
I looked at him.
“Grandpa's old house?””
My father nodded slowly.
It was a beautiful property he'd inherited from his father.
He had always planned to leave it to his grandchildren.
It was worth well over a million dollars.
My mother continued.
“Marcus said Vanessa deserved something of her own. He said you and Nia already had everything.””
I stared at her.
“Did he promise you something too?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I didn't ask for anything.””
Marcus interrupted.
“Eleanor, stop talking.””
My father turned toward him.
“Don't you dare tell her what to do.””
My mother began crying.
“I only wanted to help Vanessa.””
I stepped closer.
“What did you help her do?””
She wiped her cheeks.
“She told me that you were planning to move away with Lily. She said Richard was going to give you control of the company, and that Vanessa would be left with nothing.””
I frowned.
“What?””
My father looked confused.
“I never said that.””
“I know that now,” my mother whispered.
I shook my head.
“So you believed her?””
My mother looked at the floor.
“She showed me documents.””
“Forged documents?””
“I didn't know.””
I turned toward Marcus.
“Did you tell her to help you?””
He didn't answer.
My father took out his phone.
“I'm calling the police.””
Marcus immediately stepped forward.
“Richard, don't.””
“It's too late.””
“Think about what this will do to Lily.””
I stared at him.
“You don't get to use our daughter as a shield anymore.””
The front door opened.
Detective Harris entered with another officer.
They had returned after receiving Daniel's additional recordings.
“Mr. Bennett,” the detective said, addressing Marcus.
“We need you to come with us for further questioning.””
Marcus's face changed.
“On what grounds?””
“We're investigating the allegations involving the pool incident and suspected financial fraud. We also need to discuss the recordings recovered from the estate.””
Marcus looked at my mother.
Then Vanessa appeared at the top of the staircase.
She had been brought upstairs earlier to rest after complaining of dizziness.
She was holding the railing.
“Marcus?””
He turned.
“Vanessa, go back inside.””
She shook her head.
“Don't leave me.””
The detective looked between them.
“Mrs. Bennett, we'll need to speak with you as well.””
Vanessa began crying.
“I didn't do anything.””
I looked at her.
“You pushed a two-year-old into a swimming pool.””
She pressed her hand against her stomach.
“I didn't know she'd fall that far.””
I felt cold anger rise through my chest.
“You knew exactly where the water was.””
Vanessa looked at Marcus.
He didn't help her.
He didn't defend her.
He simply stared at the floor.
Then my mother spoke.
“Vanessa, tell them what really happened.””
Everyone turned.
Vanessa shook her head.
“Mom, please.””
My mother took a trembling breath.
“I know what you told me before the party.””
Vanessa's eyes widened.
“What?””
“You said Nia would be blamed. You said Marcus had already arranged everything.””
The room became silent.
My father stepped toward my mother.
“What did she arrange?””
My mother looked directly at me.
“Vanessa told me Marcus had promised her that if you were arrested, he would divorce you and marry her.””
My knees nearly gave way.
The detective looked at Marcus.
He didn't deny it.
Vanessa started crying harder.
“He said he loved me!””
I stared at her.
Then Marcus finally spoke.
“Vanessa, shut up.””
She flinched.
I watched the man I'd married reveal himself in front of everyone.
He wasn't sorry.
He wasn't frightened for Lily.
He was frightened because his plan was falling apart.
My father ordered everyone to remain in the room while the officers separated them for questioning.
Then my mother approached me.
“Nia, sweetheart.””
I stepped back.
“Don't.””
She began crying.
“I made a terrible mistake.””
I looked at her.
“You watched me grow up. You held me when I was sick. You helped me bring Lily home from the hospital.””
She nodded.
“And you knew I trusted you.””
“I know.””
“You knew Marcus had hurt me. You knew Vanessa was lying. And you still helped them.””
My mother covered her mouth.
I wiped my cheeks.
“I don't know how to forgive you.””
She lowered her head.
“I understand.””
For a moment, I thought the worst was finally over.
Then Detective Harris returned from the hallway.
He held a clear evidence bag containing a small black USB drive.
“Mrs. Bennett,” he said to me.
“We recovered this from your mother's car.””
I frowned.
“What is it?””
“We haven't examined everything yet, but the preliminary information suggests it contains audio recordings.””
“Of whom?””
The detective looked toward my mother.
“Your mother, your sister, and your husband.””
My mother began shaking.
Then the detective added something that made my father sit down.
“One recording appears to have been made approximately three months before the Halloween party.””
He turned toward me.
“And based on the date, it may explain why your sister wanted Lily removed from the family trust.””
I stared at the USB drive.
“What was said?””
Detective Harris hesitated.
Then he answered.
“Your sister told your husband that Lily wasn't really the person he should be worried about.””
I felt my blood run cold.
“Who was?””
The detective looked at Marcus.
“Your unborn nephew.””
Vanessa suddenly screamed.
“THAT'S NOT WHAT I SAID!””
My father stood.
The detective continued.
“The recording suggests Vanessa believed the unborn baby was entitled to a much larger inheritance than Lily. And she was willing to do something extreme to make sure that happened.””
I looked at my sister.
Her tears had stopped.
Her hands were trembling.
And then she whispered five words that changed everything.
“Marcus promised me Lily's inheritance.””
My father slowly turned toward him.
“Then what did you promise her in return?””
Marcus said nothing.
May you like
But when the detective opened the USB drive's preliminary transcript, the answer was waiting.
*The plan had started long before Halloween.*
