Chapter 7: The Witness Vanessa Tried to Silence
Vanessa's mother was named Margaret Collins.
She lived in a quiet suburb outside Chicago, in a large brick house surrounded by carefully trimmed hedges.
I had met her only twice.
The first time was at my wedding.
The second was during Thanksgiving dinner.
She had been polite, reserved, and strangely uncomfortable whenever Vanessa discussed money.
I had never thought much about it.
Now, apparently, she was the person who could expose everything.
Richard arranged a meeting with her through Helen.
We arrived at her house shortly after noon.
Malik stayed with Helen at the office.
I didn't want him exposed to another confrontation involving Vanessa's family.
Margaret opened the door herself.
She was in her late sixties, with short silver hair and tired blue eyes.
When she saw me, her expression changed.
“Marcus.””
“Margaret.””
She looked toward Richard.
Then she stepped aside.
“Come in.””
The living room was spotless.
A vase of white roses sat on the coffee table.
Family photographs lined the mantel.
Vanessa appeared in nearly every one.
Margaret offered us coffee.
Neither of us accepted.
She sat across from me.
“I assume you've discovered everything.””
I nodded.
“Not everything.””
She looked down.
“I was afraid this day would come.””
Richard placed a folder on the table.
“We need to ask you about the arrangement involving Vanessa and Daniel Collins.””
Margaret closed her eyes.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she looked at me.
“Vanessa has always wanted more than she could afford.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“When she was younger, she became obsessed with wealthy people. She believed money was the only way to guarantee happiness.””
Margaret rubbed her hands together.
“Her father and I worked hard, but we never had much. Vanessa hated that. She wanted expensive clothes, expensive vacations, and a life where nobody could tell her no.””
I listened silently.
“She met Daniel when she was twenty-six. He was charming. He promised her everything.””
“What happened?””
“He lost most of his money in a failed investment.””
Richard leaned forward.
“Did Daniel approach Vanessa again after she met Marcus?””
Margaret nodded.
“He contacted her shortly before your wedding.””
My stomach tightened.
“Did he encourage her to marry me?””
Margaret looked at me.
“Yes.””
The room seemed to shrink.
“He told her you had a successful business. He said you were vulnerable because of your son's situation.””
I clenched my jaw.
“My son's situation?””
Margaret nodded slowly.
“He said you were grieving. That you needed someone to take care of the household. He believed you would trust Vanessa because she was kind to Malik.””
I stared at her.
“Was any of that true?””
She looked down.
“Vanessa did care about you at first.””
“At first?””
“She liked being married to you. She liked your home. She liked the vacations and the lifestyle.””
Margaret swallowed.
“But Daniel kept calling. He told her she could have much more.””
Richard opened his folder.
“Did you know about the trust?””
Margaret nodded.
“Danielle contacted me.””
I froze.
“What?””
Margaret's eyes filled.
“She called me before she died.””
“When?””
“About two months before her death.””
I leaned forward.
“What did she say?””
Margaret reached toward a small cabinet.
She removed an old envelope.
“I kept this because I knew one day someone would need it.””
She placed it on the table.
The handwriting was Danielle's.
I recognized it immediately.
Margaret continued.
“She told me Vanessa had been asking questions about her estate. Danielle was worried. She said she didn't want you caught in the middle.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a short letter.
Margaret, I know you love your daughter. I don't want to hurt her. But I need you to understand that she has been discussing my son's inheritance with Daniel.
My hands trembled.
If anything happens to me, please make sure Marcus knows that Malik's future must remain protected.
I stopped reading.
Richard took the letter and examined it.
“Did you tell Vanessa about this?””
Margaret shook her head.
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because she threatened me.””
I looked up.
“What?””
Margaret's voice trembled.
“She told me if I ever spoke to Marcus or Danielle again, she would make sure I never saw my grandchildren.””
I frowned.
“You have other grandchildren?””
Margaret nodded.
“Vanessa has a daughter.””
I stared at her.
A daughter?
Vanessa had never mentioned having a child.
“Where is she?””
Margaret looked toward the staircase.
“Her name is Lily. She's thirteen.””
I felt a chill.
“Does she live with Vanessa?””
“No. She lives with her father.””
Richard looked up.
“Why?””
Margaret hesitated.
“Because Vanessa left when Lily was very young.””
I sat back.
Suddenly, a pattern was emerging.
Vanessa had entered my life as a woman who wanted to build a family.
But she had already abandoned one.
“Did Daniel have anything to do with Lily's father?”” Richard asked.
Margaret nodded.
“He was involved in their divorce.””
I stared at her.
“How?””
“He convinced Vanessa that Lily's father was keeping her from becoming successful. He encouraged her to leave.””
Margaret wiped her eyes.
“Vanessa never forgave him for choosing their daughter over her.””
I looked at Richard.
This was becoming bigger than an inheritance dispute.
“Margaret,” I said carefully, “did Vanessa ever hurt Lily?””
Margaret looked away.
“She used to tell her she was a burden.””
My chest tightened.
I thought of Malik.
The comments about his mother.
The accusations.
The way he had become frightened in his own home.
I understood now that Vanessa's cruelty wasn't a sudden reaction to money.
It was a pattern.
Margaret stood and walked toward the kitchen.
When she returned, she was holding a small digital recorder.
“I kept this.””
Richard examined it.
“What is it?””
“A conversation I recorded when Vanessa came to my house six months ago.””
She pressed play.
Vanessa's voice filled the room.
“Mom, I need you to stop interfering.””
Margaret answered, “I'm not interfering. I'm asking you to leave the boy alone.””
Vanessa laughed.
“Malik isn't my responsibility.””
“You married his father.””
“Exactly. I married Marcus. I didn't marry the child.””
Margaret's voice became firmer.
“He's sixteen.””
“And he has eight million dollars waiting for him. Don't pretend you don't understand why I'm interested.””
I felt my fingers go numb.
Margaret replied, “That money belongs to him.””
Vanessa snapped.
“Not if I can prove he can't manage it.””
The recording continued.
Margaret asked, “And what happens when Marcus discovers what you're doing?””
Vanessa laughed again.
“By then, he'll be too embarrassed to admit he married the wrong woman.””
Then Daniel's voice appeared.
“Stop arguing with her, Margaret. You're making this harder than it needs to be.””
Margaret replied, “You have no right to be in my daughter's life.””
Daniel's answer was chilling.
“I have every right. She's the only person who understands what we're trying to accomplish.””
The recording ended.
Richard slowly placed the device on the table.
“This is valuable evidence.””
Margaret looked at me.
“I'm sorry.””
I shook my head.
“Why?””
“Because I should have stopped her sooner.””
I looked at the letter from Danielle.
“You tried.””
Margaret began crying.
“I knew Malik was suffering. I knew Vanessa was cruel to him. But I was afraid she'd keep Lily away from me.””
I stood.
“Where is Lily now?””
“With her father.””
“Does she know about this?””
Margaret shook her head.
“No.””
Richard closed the folder.
“We'll need to speak with her father if Margaret is willing to cooperate.””
Margaret nodded.
“I'll help.””
Before we left, she handed me another envelope.
“This is the most important thing.””
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph of Vanessa and Daniel standing outside a courthouse.
The date was from three months before my wedding.
On the back was a handwritten note.
*They filed a business partnership agreement under both names.*
I looked at Margaret.
“What does this mean?””
She swallowed.
“They weren't just lovers, Marcus.””
She pointed toward the photograph.
“They were business partners.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
Richard examined the image.
“Do you know what company?””
Margaret nodded.
“Collins Financial Solutions.””
I recognized the name.
It was the company that had received nearly three hundred thousand dollars from my accounts.
Richard immediately called his office.
Then my phone rang.
It was Helen.
“Marcus, you need to come back.””
“What happened?””
“Vanessa has filed an emergency petition.””
“For what?””
Helen paused.
Then she said:
“She is asking the court to remove Malik from your custody, claiming he is emotionally unstable and financially dangerous.””
I felt the room tilt.
“On what grounds?””
Helen's voice became colder.
“She submitted photographs of the money from your foyer and a written statement claiming Malik attacked her.””
I gripped the phone.
“She slapped him!””
“I know. But she's presenting a different story.””
I looked at Richard.
He had already started moving toward the door.
Helen continued.
“And Marcus, she's requested an emergency hearing for tomorrow morning.””
I looked at Margaret.
She was crying again.
May you like
Then I heard Helen say:
“She's also asking the court to appoint Daniel Collins as Malik's temporary financial guardian.””
