Chapter 9: The Signature That Almost Destroyed Us
The company was called Reed Future Holdings.
I had never heard of it.
Neither had Richard.
But the paperwork carried my name.
My signature.
And Malik's identification information.
The transfer request had been submitted at 3:42 p.m. the previous day.
That was less than two hours before Vanessa slapped Malik in the foyer.
I stared at the document.
“Who created this company?””
Richard shook his head.
“We're investigating.””
“Could Vanessa have done it?””
“Possibly. But the request was submitted using credentials connected to your business office.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Someone inside my company?””
Richard nodded.
“That's one possibility.””
Malik stood beside me.
“Dad, did someone steal my money?””
“No, buddy. The bank blocked the transfer.””
“Then why are they trying again?””
I looked at him.
“Because they haven't given up.””
He lowered his eyes.
I crouched in front of him.
“But they won't get anything. I promise.””
Richard arranged an emergency meeting with the trustee.
We drove directly to Helen's office.
She was waiting with two attorneys and a financial investigator.
A large screen displayed the attempted transaction.
Helen pointed toward the signature.
“This is a sophisticated forgery.””
I leaned closer.
“It looks like mine.””
“Because someone had access to previous documents containing your signature.””
Richard frowned.
“Where?””
“Possibly your business office. Possibly your personal records.””
I thought about Vanessa.
She had access to almost everything in our home.
Our tax returns.
Our bank statements.
Our insurance documents.
Even the old files I kept in my office.
“She could have copied it,” I said.
Helen nodded.
“That's possible.””
The investigator introduced himself as Thomas Blake.
He had spent twenty years examining financial fraud cases.
He opened another document.
“Mr. Reed, the company receiving the funds was registered six weeks ago.””
“By whom?””
“An attorney acting on behalf of an individual named Nathan Cole.””
I frowned.
“Who is that?””
Thomas displayed a photograph.
I recognized him.
He was one of the men who occasionally attended Daniel's business meetings.
I had seen him once at a charity event.
“He works with Daniel,” I said.
Thomas nodded.
“Our preliminary review suggests the company was established to receive funds from several separate accounts.””
“How many?””
“At least seven.””
Helen looked troubled.
“Are any of those accounts connected to Danielle's estate?””
Thomas nodded.
“Two.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Which ones?””
“The education trust and the investment trust.””
Helen immediately opened her laptop.
“That shouldn't be possible.””
Thomas explained that someone had submitted a request to change the authorized contact information.
The request had been rejected because the signature verification failed.
But the attempted transfer had revealed something more troubling.
Someone had been monitoring Malik's trust for months.
And they knew exactly when the next distribution review would occur.
Richard leaned forward.
“Who had access to that information?””
Helen looked at me.
“Only the trustee, the legal team, and the people named in the original estate documents.””
I frowned.
“Could Vanessa have obtained it through the old paperwork?””
“Possibly.””
Thomas opened another file.
“There is something else you should know.””
He placed a printed email on the table.
It had been sent from Daniel's company account to Nathan Cole.
The subject line was:
*FINAL TRANSFER — BEFORE THE HEARING.*
I read the message.
Once Marcus is distracted by the custody dispute, submit the transfer. If the first account is blocked, use the second authorization. We only need one successful transaction.
I looked up.
“They planned to steal the money while I was in court.””
Thomas nodded.
“That's what the evidence suggests.””
Helen sat back.
“Danielle anticipated this.””
She opened a drawer and removed a sealed envelope.
It was marked with Malik's name.
“Your mother left instructions that this envelope should only be opened if someone attempted to transfer money out of your trust without authorization.””
Malik looked at it.
“It's for me?””
Helen nodded.
He opened the envelope carefully.
Inside was a small handwritten note and a legal document.
The note read:
My beautiful boy, if you are reading this, someone has tried to take what I saved for you. Remember that your worth has never depended on money. The money is only a tool to help you build the life you deserve.
Malik's eyes filled.
He turned the page.
It was a formal declaration.
Helen explained that Danielle had established a secondary protective mechanism.
If anyone attempted an unauthorized transfer, the trustee could immediately freeze all related distributions and initiate an independent audit.
It also required the trustee to review any changes made to the trust's administrative records during the previous twelve months.
Richard looked at Thomas.
“Can we trace the attempted transfer?””
Thomas nodded.
“We already have a preliminary result.””
He displayed a digital access log.
The request had been submitted from an external network.
But the authentication token had been generated by a device registered to Vanessa.
I stared at the screen.
“She's behind it.””
“That's what the evidence indicates.””
Richard asked, “Can we identify the person who submitted the request?””
Thomas enlarged another section.
A username appeared.
NCOLE_ADMIN.
Nathan Cole.
I leaned back.
“Then Daniel wasn't working alone.””
“No,” Thomas replied.
“We believe this was part of a broader operation.””
The room fell silent.
Then Helen spoke.
“There is another issue.””
I turned.
“What?””
“The trust contains a provision requiring the trustee to notify Malik when an attempted fraudulent transfer occurs.””
She looked at my son.
“Malik, because you're approaching seventeen, you have the right to participate in the next protective review.””
Malik frowned.
“What do I have to do?””
“Nothing complicated. You can choose an independent attorney to represent your interests.””
He looked at me.
“Can Dad do it?””
I shook my head gently.
“I can support you, but you should have someone whose only responsibility is protecting you.””
Malik considered this.
Then he looked at Helen.
“Can you help me find someone?””
Helen smiled.
“Absolutely.””
For the next two hours, we reviewed documents and preserved evidence.
By the time we left, the trustee had frozen the affected accounts and notified the financial institutions.
Richard also contacted the authorities handling the fraud investigation.
Vanessa and Daniel were now facing more than marital consequences.
They were under investigation for attempted financial fraud, forgery, and conspiracy.
I thought that was the end of it.
I was wrong.
At 6:18 p.m., my phone rang.
The caller was my company's chief financial officer, James.
“Marcus, we have a serious problem.””
I walked away from Malik.
“What happened?””
“Someone accessed the executive document archive.””
“When?””
“Last night.””
“What did they take?””
“Your business acquisition files. Tax records. Personal identification documents.””
My stomach tightened.
“Can you identify the user?””
“Not yet. But the access was authorized using Vanessa's guest credentials.””
I closed my eyes.
“Anything else?””
James hesitated.
“There's a file marked Danielle Reed Estate.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“What about it?””
“Someone downloaded the original scanned documents.””
“Which documents?””
“The property trust agreements.””
I stared at the wall.
“James, lock down the archive immediately.””
“We've already done that.””
“Preserve every access log.””
“Understood.””
I ended the call.
Richard approached.
“What happened?””
I told him.
He listened carefully.
Then he said, “Marcus, I think we need to revisit the property documents.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel's forged agreement may not have been an isolated attempt.””
I remembered the document he had shown us at the door.
The fake transfer of the house.
Richard continued.
“If someone accessed the original property agreements, they may have been preparing additional forged documents.””
I felt my stomach turn.
“What could they do?””
“Potentially attempt to sell or refinance property without proper authority.””
I looked toward Malik.
He was sitting on a bench, reading his mother's letter.
I lowered my voice.
“Could they take his house?””
“Not if we act quickly.””
Richard called the property attorney.
Within minutes, we discovered that someone had submitted a preliminary inquiry about refinancing the commercial building held in Malik's trust.
The inquiry had been made under the name of a company connected to Daniel.
No transaction had been completed.
But someone was testing the system.
I felt anger rising inside me.
“How many times are they going to try?””
Richard looked at me.
“Until they believe they can't get away with it.””
I stared at the documents.
Then I remembered something.
The photograph from Margaret.
The business partnership agreement between Vanessa and Daniel.
“Richard, I want to know exactly when that company was established.””
He made a call.
Twenty minutes later, he returned.
“The company was registered eleven months ago.””
I looked at him.
“Before Vanessa started transferring money?””
“Yes.””
“Before the first suspicious withdrawal?””
“Yes.””
I felt something cold settle in my chest.
“Then this wasn't a desperate attempt to solve Daniel's debt.””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
I looked toward the window.
“It was planned.””
He nodded.
“And we need to find out who else was involved.””
At that moment, Malik approached us.
He was holding his phone.
“Dad?””
“What is it?””
“I got a message.””
I took the phone.
The number was unknown.
The message read:
*Tell your father to stop digging. Your mother made a mistake trusting Evelyn. If he keeps going, he'll learn what really happened before she died.*
My blood ran cold.
I showed Richard.
He read it twice.
Then he looked at me.
“Marcus, don't reply.””
But Malik was staring at the screen.
“Dad?””
“Yes?””
He pointed toward the final line.
“There's another message.””
I scrolled down.
A photograph had arrived.
It showed Danielle sitting in a hospital room.
She looked pale.
Exhausted.
And standing beside her bed was Vanessa.
The timestamp was from the final week of Danielle's life.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written:
*She didn't die knowing the whole truth.*
