Chapter 8: The First Victim
Luciano did not remember leaving the café.
He remembered Marcus speaking.
He remembered Isabella’s expression.
He remembered the sound of his own heartbeat becoming louder than the world around him.
But the rest was a blur.
Because one thought had taken over everything.
*Dario had done this before.*
Celeste had not been the first woman pushed toward the edge.
She had not been the first person used in a plan.
The staircase was not a sudden act of violence.
It was a pattern.
And Isabella had been the beginning.
They watched the footage together in Marcus’s office.
Luciano.
Isabella.
Nora.
And Marcus.
The room was dark except for the glow of the computer screen.
The video started.
The angle was different.
The hidden staircase camera.
The same one that captured Celeste’s fall.
But this time, the date on the screen was three days earlier.
Isabella walked into view.
She looked different from the woman Luciano had met.
Tired.
Angry.
Determined.
She was standing near the staircase holding a folder.
Then Dario appeared.
Luciano’s hands tightened.
Dario approached her with the same confidence he always carried.
The same smile.
The same arrogance.
“You should have stayed away.””
Isabella looked at him.
“Your father sent you?””
Dario laughed.
“You always assume everything is a conspiracy.””
“You’re here because you’re scared.””
His smile disappeared slightly.
“Scared of what?””
“That Luciano will find out.””
The video froze for a second.
Luciano leaned forward.
“Turn up the audio.””
Marcus adjusted the volume.
The conversation continued.
Dario stepped closer.
“You don’t understand what happens if he knows.””
Isabella held up the folder.
“He deserves the truth.””
“No.””
Dario shook his head.
“He deserves peace.””
Isabella laughed.
“Peace built on lies?””
Dario’s expression changed.
Then he said something that made everyone in the room go silent.
“You don’t know what my father will do to him.””
Luciano stared at the screen.
Not what he expected.
Not a threat.
A warning.
Dario continued.
“You think exposing Augusto destroys him.””
A pause.
“It destroys Luciano first.””
The video showed Isabella stepping backward.
Dario reached toward her.
Not pushing.
Not yet.
But the movement was enough.
Everyone watching knew what came next.
Except it didn’t.
Because another voice interrupted.
Augusto.
“Dario.””
The screen showed him entering the hallway.
He looked at Isabella.
Then at the folder.
Then at Dario.
“Leave.””
Dario looked surprised.
“But—”
“I said leave.””
For the first time, Dario obeyed.
Augusto waited until his son disappeared.
Then he turned to Isabella.
And said:
“You have no idea what you’re protecting.””
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Because the footage had changed everything.
Dario was not acting alone.
But he also wasn’t acting exactly how they thought.
Luciano looked at Isabella.
“You knew.””
She nodded.
“I suspected.””
“You knew Dario was involved.””
“Yes.””
“And you still let him near Celeste?””
Pain crossed her face.
“I tried to stop it.””
Luciano stood.
“How?””
“I warned Elena.””
“Your sister.””
“Yes.””
“And?””
Isabella looked down.
“She said she would handle it.””
Luciano’s expression hardened.
His mother again.
Another secret.
Another person who knew.
Another person who waited.
“You all knew.””
“No.””
Isabella looked up.
“Not everything.””
“But enough.””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
Marcus closed the laptop.
“There’s something else.””
Luciano looked at him.
“What?””
“The folder Isabella was carrying.””
“What about it?””
“We never found it.””
Luciano looked at Isabella.
“What was inside?””
She hesitated.
Then answered.
“Proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That Matteo Valenti didn’t build the empire alone.””
Luciano already knew where this was going.
“Who helped him?””
Isabella looked at him.
“Your father.””
A silence followed.
Marcus frowned.
“But Augusto was young.””
“Yes.””
“How young?””
Isabella’s expression darkened.
“Old enough to understand.””
She looked at Luciano.
“Old enough to choose.””
That night, Luciano confronted Dario.
Not with anger.
Not with threats.
With a question.
Dario was sitting alone in the mansion library.
For once, he looked less like an enemy.
More like someone who had finally realized he was trapped too.
“You knew Isabella was alive.””
Dario looked up.
“Yes.””
“You knew about the staircase incident.””
His silence confirmed it.
Luciano stepped closer.
“Why?””
Dario looked away.
“Because my father made me.””
Luciano almost laughed.
“You’re still blaming him?””
Dario’s expression changed.
“You think I’m like him?””
“Yes.””
The answer was immediate.
Dario accepted it.
“Maybe I am.””
A pause.
“But I’m not the one who created this.””
Luciano stared.
“What does that mean?””
Dario stood.
“You still think this started with you.””
“Didn’t it?””
“No.””
Dario walked toward the window.
“This started before you were born.””
Luciano watched him carefully.
“Explain.””
Dario hesitated.
Then:
“Your father didn’t become dangerous because of power.””
He looked back.
“He became dangerous because he was afraid.””
“Of what?””
Dario lowered his voice.
“Of losing everything.””
Luciano shook his head.
“You keep saying that. What does he think he’ll lose?””
Dario answered:
“The truth about who really owns the Valenti empire.””
The next morning, Luciano met with the board.
But this time, he did not walk in alone.
He brought the original footage.
The unedited recording.
And a person nobody expected.
Dario.
The room erupted.
Augusto stood immediately.
“What is this?””
Luciano placed the file on the table.
“The truth.””
Augusto looked at Dario.
“What are you doing?””
For the first time, Dario did not look afraid.
“I’m tired.””
The room went silent.
“Tired of cleaning up things I didn’t create.””
Augusto’s face hardened.
“You ungrateful child.””
Dario laughed.
“There it is.””
He looked around the room.
“The same thing you always say when someone stops obeying.””
Luciano watched his father carefully.
Because this was the first time he had seen Augusto lose control without pretending.
“Dario,” Augusto said quietly.
“Don’t.””
Dario shook his head.
“You used me.””
“You benefited from this family.””
“I was your weapon.””
The words echoed.
Augusto looked at Luciano.
“Do you believe him?””
Luciano did not answer.
Because he remembered something.
The recording.
The staircase.
The missing minutes.
The setup.
Augusto had needed Luciano angry.
But he had also needed Dario afraid.
Both sons had been pieces on the same board.
Then the boardroom doors opened.
Elena walked in.
Everyone turned.
Luciano looked at her.
“Mom.””
She looked at him with sadness.
“I should have told you.””
Augusto’s expression changed.
“Elena.””
She ignored him.
“I should have told you everything the day you were old enough to understand.””
Luciano stared.
“Everything?””
She nodded.
“There is one more thing.””
Nobody moved.
No one breathed.
Elena placed an old document on the table.
A birth record.
Not his.
Not Isabella’s.
Another one.
Augusto immediately stepped forward.
“No.””
The word came out sharper than anyone expected.
Luciano looked at him.
That reaction told him everything.
“What is it?””
Elena looked at Augusto.
Then at Luciano.
“The reason your grandfather left the evidence for you.””
She pushed the document forward.
Luciano picked it up.
His eyes moved across the page.
And then he saw the name.
The name that made every lie collapse.
Because the person connected to the Valenti empire’s darkest secret…
Was not Augusto.
Was not Dario.
Was not even Matteo.
It was someone Luciano had spent his entire life protecting.
Someone whose blood ran through his own veins.
Someone who was never supposed to exist.

The document revealed the impossible:
Luciano Valenti was not Augusto’s biological son.
