Chapter 4: The Father’s Blind Spot
The memory card never reached Augusto’s hands.
Luciano moved before anyone else could.
His father’s fingers had barely closed around the small black piece of plastic when Luciano grabbed his wrist.
The entire boardroom froze.
Not because of the confrontation.
Because of the expression on Luciano’s face.
There was no rage.
No shouting.
No uncontrolled reaction.
Only disappointment.
And somehow, that was worse.
“Let go,” Augusto said quietly.
Luciano stared at him.
“For years, I thought you were cold because you were powerful.””
The room remained silent.
“I thought you made difficult decisions because someone had to.””
His grip tightened slightly.
“But now I understand.””
Augusto’s eyes narrowed.
“Understand what?””
“That you don’t make decisions.””
Luciano looked at the memory card.
“You make excuses.””
A few executives lowered their eyes.
They had spent decades watching the Valenti family from a distance.
They had seen arguments.
They had seen power struggles.
But they had never seen Luciano speak to his father like this.
Augusto pulled his hand free.
“You are letting emotions cloud your judgment.””
Luciano gave a bitter smile.
“No.””
He looked around the room.
“For the first time, I’m seeing clearly.””
Nora stepped forward.
“Luciano.””
He turned.
She held her phone tightly.
“The backup file is not just video.””
“What else?””
“Audio.””
A chill moved through the room.
Dario immediately stepped forward.
“Give me that.””
Nora stepped back.
“No.””
Dario laughed.
“You don’t understand what you’re holding.””
“No,” Nora replied.
“I understand perfectly.””
Her voice grew stronger.
“I’m holding proof that you and your father planned this.””
Augusto’s expression hardened.
“Be careful with accusations.””
Nora looked at him.
“Funny.””
She lifted her phone.
“Because that’s exactly what you wanted everyone else to do to Luciano.””
The room went still.
Luciano looked at Nora.
“What did you hear?””
She hesitated.
Then she looked at Augusto.
“The conversation started before Celeste arrived.””
Dario’s face changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
Nora noticed.
“So you do know what’s on it.””
Dario said nothing.
Luciano stepped closer.
“Nora.””
She swallowed.
“I didn’t hear everything.””
“Tell me what you heard.””
She looked down at the screen.
“There was a conversation between Augusto and Dario.””
Luciano waited.
“They talked about the recording.””
A pause.
“They talked about you.””
His voice lowered.
“What did they say?””
Nora looked at him.
“They said you had to be pushed into a public reaction.””
Luciano’s jaw tightened.
“Why?””
Nora looked toward the executives.
“Because someone was already preparing to remove you.””
The room became uncomfortable.
Everyone knew what she meant.
The board documents.
The leaked footage.
The attempt to destroy Luciano’s reputation.
It was all connected.
Dario had not just planned an attack.
He had planned a takeover.
That evening, Luciano returned to the hospital alone.
Celeste was awake, watching the news with the volume turned down.
The screen showed another discussion about the leaked footage.
Another panel analyzing Luciano’s behavior.
Another stranger deciding what kind of man he was.
She turned the television off when he entered.
“You saw the board.””
Luciano nodded.
“They’re trying to remove you.””
“Yes.””
She looked at him carefully.
“And your father?””
Luciano sat beside her.
“He knew.””
Celeste looked away.
The confirmation hurt more than the suspicion.
“I kept hoping I was wrong.””
“I know.””
“I wanted there to be another explanation.””
“There isn’t.””
A tear slipped down her cheek.
Not from pain.
From betrayal.
“I married into this family because I believed family meant something to them.””
Luciano took her hand.
“It means something.””
She looked at him.
“Not to them.””
He had no answer.
Because she was right.
Later that night, Luciano received an unexpected visitor.
His mother.
Elena Valenti.
She rarely involved herself in family conflicts.
For years, she had remained behind the scenes.
Quiet.
Elegant.
Almost invisible.
But when she entered the hospital room, Luciano immediately knew something was wrong.
“You need to leave.””
He frowned.
“What?””
“You and Celeste need to leave the Valenti estate.””
Luciano stared at her.
“Why?””
Elena looked toward the hallway before closing the door.
“Because this was not Dario’s idea alone.””
Luciano stood.
“I know.””
“No.””
Her voice became urgent.
“You don’t.””
She stepped closer.
“You think your father wanted you removed from the company.””
“He did.””
“That’s only part of it.””
Luciano studied her face.
“What are you saying?””
Elena looked at Celeste.
Then back at her son.
“Your father has been afraid of you for years.””
Luciano almost laughed.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Elena lowered her voice.
“Because you were the only person who could expose him.””
The room went silent.
Luciano felt something shift.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
“What did he do?””
Elena looked down.
“That is the question I was hoping you would never have to ask.””
The next morning, Marcus arrived with information.
He placed a file on Luciano’s desk.
“I traced the leaked footage.””
“And?””
“It came from inside the Valenti company servers.””
Luciano opened the folder.
“Who had access?””
Marcus hesitated.
“Your father.””
Luciano looked through the documents.
There was something else.
A transfer record.
A payment.
A name.
His eyes stopped.
“Who is this?””
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
“I was hoping you would tell me.””
The name was unfamiliar.
But the company attached to it was not.
A private security firm.
One that had worked with the Valenti family for years.
Luciano looked up.
“My father hired them?””
“Yes.””
“For what?””
Marcus didn’t answer immediately.
Then he placed another document down.
“A surveillance contract.””
Luciano’s expression changed.
“Surveillance?””
“Yes.””
Marcus pointed at the date.
“Signed six months ago.””
Luciano felt his stomach tighten.
Six months.
Before the graduation.
Before the fall.
Before Dario’s plan.
His father had been watching someone.
The question was who.
That afternoon, Luciano returned to the mansion.
Not to confront his father.
Not yet.
He needed answers first.
The estate looked different now.
The same walls.
The same paintings.
The same furniture.
But the illusion was gone.
This was no longer his family home.
It was a crime scene.
He entered his father’s office.
Augusto was already there.
Waiting.
“You finally came.””
Luciano closed the door.
“You knew I would.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Augusto poured himself a drink.
“Because you always need answers.””
Luciano looked around the room.
“You watched me.””
Augusto said nothing.
“The security contract.””
Still nothing.
“You had someone monitoring me.””
Augusto slowly turned.
“You were becoming unpredictable.””
Luciano stared at him.
“I was your son.””
“You were becoming a threat.””
The words landed harder than any accusation.
Luciano stepped back slightly.
“Threat to what?””
Augusto looked at him.
“To everything I built.””
A cold realization entered Luciano’s mind.
This was bigger than Dario.
Bigger than the board.
Bigger than the video.
“Why was the camera recording before Celeste arrived?””
Augusto’s expression changed.
Only briefly.
But Luciano saw it.
“Who was the target?””
Silence.
Then Augusto spoke.
“You should stop asking questions you aren’t prepared to answer.””
Luciano moved closer.
“No.””
His voice was steady.
“That’s what you always wanted.””
Augusto frowned.
“You think you know me?””
“I think I know what you’re afraid of.””
For the first time, his father looked uncertain.
Luciano continued.
“You weren’t trying to destroy my reputation.””
A pause.
“You were trying to force me into doing something.””
Augusto said nothing.
“You needed me angry.””
Still nothing.
“You needed me violent.””
The room became colder.
“And you needed everyone watching.””
Luciano looked directly at him.
“But why?””
Augusto’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
A message.
His face changed.
Luciano noticed.
“What is it?””
Augusto ignored him.
Another message appeared.
Then another.
For the first time, Luciano saw genuine fear in his father’s eyes.
Not anger.
Not control.
Fear.
Augusto quickly deleted the messages.
Too quickly.
But Luciano had already seen enough.
The sender’s name.
A name he had never expected.
Elena.
His mother.
Luciano stared.
Because the person who had warned him to leave the mansion…
Was apparently the same person now contacting his father in secret.
And suddenly he realized something.
The family secret they were protecting was not hidden inside the recording.
May you like
The recording was only the beginning.
The real secret was the reason everyone in the Valenti family was terrified of what Luciano might discover next.
