Chapter 5: The Secret Elena Buried

Luciano did not sleep that night.

He sat alone in his office, staring at the message he had seen on his father’s phone.

Not the words.

Not the time.

The name.

*Elena.*

His mother.

The same woman who had walked into Celeste’s hospital room and warned them to leave.

The same woman who had looked terrified when she told him his father was afraid of him.

And now she was secretly contacting Augusto.

Luciano had spent his entire life believing he understood his family.

His father was ruthless.

His brother was reckless.

His mother was gentle.

But maybe that was the story he had been allowed to believe.

Maybe every person in the Valenti family had been playing a role.

The question was who had written the script.

The next morning, Luciano went to see Elena before anyone else could reach her.

He found her in the old greenhouse behind the mansion.

It was the one place in the estate that still felt untouched.

Unlike the rest of the property, there were no portraits of Valenti ancestors watching from the walls.

No business documents.

No reminders of power.

Only plants.

Quiet.

Life.

Elena was watering a row of white orchids when she saw him.

She did not look surprised.

“You saw the messages.””

Luciano stopped.

“You knew?””

She set down the watering can.

“I knew you would find out eventually.””

His expression hardened.

“So you were talking to him.””

“Yes.””

“After telling me to run from him?””

Elena looked away.

“That is why I was talking to him.””

Luciano stepped closer.

“That makes no sense.””

“It will.””

He waited.

She sighed.

“You are asking the wrong question.””

“What should I ask?””

“Why was Augusto afraid?””

Luciano’s eyes narrowed.

“I already know.””

“No.””

Elena shook her head.

“You know he wanted control.””

She looked at him.

“You do not know what he was trying to hide.””

The words felt familiar.

Everyone kept saying the same thing.

There was something beneath the surface.

Something larger than the attack on Celeste.

Something that had existed long before that night.

Luciano crossed his arms.

“Then tell me.””

Elena was silent.

For several seconds, he thought she would refuse.

Then she whispered:

“Your father didn’t build the Valenti empire alone.””

Luciano frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means there was someone else.””

“Who?””

Elena looked toward the old greenhouse windows.

“The person who taught him everything.””

A pause.

“Your grandfather.””

Luciano felt confused.

“My grandfather died fifteen years ago.””

“Yes.””

“And?””

Elena’s voice became quieter.

“Some things do not die when people do.””

Luciano spent the next hour listening to a story he had never heard.

When he was young, he believed his grandfather, Matteo Valenti, was a brilliant businessman.

A legend.

A man who transformed a small family company into an international empire.

That was the version everyone repeated.

But Elena told him another version.

A darker one.

Matteo Valenti had believed loyalty was something that had to be forced.

He kept records on everyone.

Employees.

Partners.

Even family.

“He believed information was power,” Elena said.

Luciano stared at her.

“And my father learned from him.””

“Yes.””

“Then what is the secret?””

Elena hesitated.

“Your father found something after Matteo died.””

“What?””

“A file.””

Luciano frowned.

“What kind of file?””

“One that could destroy everything.””

The greenhouse became silent.

“What was inside?””

Elena looked at him.

“That is what Augusto has spent years trying to find out.””

Luciano felt a chill.

“Wait.””

He stepped back.

“My father has been searching for something?””

“Yes.””

“Something my grandfather left behind?””

“Yes.””

“Then why would he attack me?””

Elena’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Because he thinks you found it.””

Luciano returned to his office and immediately called Marcus.

“I need everything connected to my grandfather.””

Marcus sounded surprised.

“Matteo Valenti?””

“Yes.””

“That was fifteen years ago.””

“I know.””

A pause.

“What are we looking for?””

“Anything unusual after his death.””

Marcus became quiet.

“Luciano…”

“What?””

“You think this is connected?””

“I know it is.””

After ending the call, Luciano opened the old family archives stored in the company system.

He searched.

Documents.

Contracts.

Inheritance records.

Most files were normal.

Until he found one.

A restricted folder.

Created three days after Matteo Valenti’s death.

Access denied.

The authorization list showed only two names.

Matteo Valenti.

And Augusto Valenti.

Luciano stared at the screen.

Then he noticed something else.

A third name.

Added recently.

Six months ago.

His own name.

But he had never requested access.

Someone had added him.

Someone wanted him to find it.

That afternoon, Celeste received a visitor.

Dario.

She immediately reached for the call button.

But Dario raised his hands.

“I’m not here to hurt you.””

Her eyes were cold.

“You already did enough.””

For the first time, Dario looked uncomfortable.

Not guilty.

Uncomfortable.

Like he did not like being reminded of what happened.

“I need to talk.””

“No.””

“Celeste.””

“No.””

Her voice was stronger than before.

“You pushed me down a staircase.””

Dario looked away.

“I know.””

“You planned it.””

Silence.

That silence answered more than words.

Celeste studied him.

“Why are you here?””

Dario stepped closer.

“Because my father is going to destroy Luciano.””

She almost laughed.

“You helped him.””

“I thought I understood the plan.””

The sentence made her pause.

“You thought?””

Dario looked frustrated.

“I didn’t know everything.””

Celeste stared at him.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I don’t expect you to forgive me.””

“Good.””

Dario swallowed.

“But I need you to understand something.””

“What?””

“My father never cared about making Luciano look guilty.””

Celeste watched him carefully.

“What did he care about?””

Dario looked toward the hospital door.

Then whispered:

“He needed Luciano to find something.””

That night, Luciano finally accessed the restricted file.

The password was not complicated.

It was not a code.

It was a date.

The day his grandfather died.

The folder opened.

Inside was one document.

One photograph.

And one recording.

Luciano opened the photograph first.

It showed three people.

His grandfather.

His father.

And a woman.

A woman Luciano recognized.

But impossible.

Because she was supposed to be dead.

His mother’s sister.

Isabella.

The aunt he had been told died before he was born.

Luciano stared at the image.

Then he opened the recording.

Static.

Then a voice.

His grandfather.

“If you are hearing this, then Augusto has failed to destroy the evidence.””

Luciano froze.

The recording continued.

“I knew my son would become worse than me.””

A pause.

“That is why I left this behind.””

Luciano leaned closer.

Then his grandfather said the words that changed everything.

“The Valenti empire was never built on success.””

A long silence.

“It was built on a crime.””

Luciano stopped breathing.

The recording continued.

“And the person who knows the truth is the person Augusto has spent years protecting.””

A name followed.

A name Luciano had never expected.

The audio ended.

But the message remained.

Because the person his father had been protecting…

Was not an enemy.

Not a business partner.

Not a rival.

It was someone inside their own home.

Luciano looked at the photograph again.

At the woman standing beside his grandfather.

At the woman he had been told was gone.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A woman’s voice spoke softly.

“Luciano.””

He froze.

Because he knew that voice.

He had heard it only in childhood memories.

The voice of someone everyone said was dead.

“Your father is not the only one who lied to you.””

A pause.

“Your mother did too.””

The call ended.

And Luciano realized the truth he had been chasing was not buried in the past.

May you like

It was alive.

And it had been watching him the entire time.
