Chapter 9: The Truth About My Father's Last Day

For three years, I had believed my father's death was the one thing in my life that made sense.

A heart attack.

A tragic loss.

A painful goodbye.

Something terrible, but simple.

Now I was standing in a hotel room, holding a phone that had just told me my father died while hiding a secret.

A secret connected to my sister.

My aunt.

My doctor.

And possibly himself.

I looked at Daniel.

"What does that mean?""

He didn't answer immediately.

Because he knew the truth.

Sometimes a person doesn't answer because they don't know.

Sometimes they don't answer because they are afraid the answer will hurt.

"Emily," he said quietly, "we need to find out.""

I hated that sentence.

Because I had spent the last few days finding out things I never wanted to know.

Every answer destroyed another piece of my life.

But I couldn't stop now.

Not after everything.

My mother agreed to meet us the next morning.

She didn't ask why.

I think she already knew.

We met at a quiet restaurant near the coast.

My mother arrived carrying a small envelope.

She placed it on the table before sitting down.

"I kept this for three years.""

I stared at it.

"What is it?""

"Something your father wanted you to have.""

My heart tightened.

"Then why didn't you give it to me?""

She looked down.

"Because I was afraid.""

The same words.

Everyone was always afraid.

Afraid of consequences.

Afraid of the truth.

Afraid of losing something.

Nobody was ever afraid of hurting me.

"Open it.""

I looked at the envelope.

My father's handwriting was on the front.

*For Emily.*

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

I read the first line.

My dear Emily,

I had to stop.

Because seeing those words made him feel alive again.

For a moment, I wasn't in that restaurant.

I was eight years old.

Sitting beside him while he taught me how to ride a bicycle.

I was twelve.

Listening to him explain that honesty mattered even when honesty was painful.

I was twenty-three.

Watching him hug me before I moved away from home.

Then I continued.

If you are reading this, something has gone wrong.

My breathing changed.

I hoped I would have the chance to explain everything myself.

The next lines were harder.

There are people around us who have made choices they regret. Some of them are afraid. Some of them are selfish. Some of them are both.

I looked at my mother.

She was crying silently.

But the most important thing I want you to understand is this: your family members are not their worst moments. But they are responsible for what they do after those moments.

I swallowed.

That sounded exactly like him.

Kind.

But not blind.

The next paragraph made my heart stop.

I discovered that Rachel had been manipulating Vanessa. I discovered Marcus was involved. I discovered someone outside our family was helping them.

Dr. Blake.

I knew.

But my father didn't write his name.

Not yet.

I confronted them.

I looked up.

My mother closed her eyes.

"You knew.""

She nodded.

"He was going to expose them.""

"Then why didn't he?""

Her face broke.

"Because he died before he could.""

I looked back at the letter.

The final lines were written differently.

Rushed.

Almost like he was running out of time.

Emily, if something happens to me, don't let anyone convince you that keeping peace is more important than finding the truth.

You have spent your whole life protecting people you love.

Please remember that you deserve protection too.

I couldn't read anymore.

I folded the letter.

My father knew.

He knew people around him were dangerous.

And he still tried to protect everyone.

Even the people who betrayed him.

"Tell me about the day he died.""

My mother looked at me.

"I've told you.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"You told me the version everyone agreed on.""

She looked away.

I knew then.

There was another version.

"He was supposed to meet someone.""

"Who?""

She hesitated.

"Dr. Blake.""

The name felt like a punch.

"Why?""

"He thought Blake knew where the missing documents were.""

"What documents?""

"The ones connected to your grandfather's estate.""

I frowned.

"What does my grandfather have to do with this?""

My mother sighed.

"Your father inherited more than money.""

She looked at me.

"He inherited a problem.""

Daniel spent the next several hours searching through the files.

Marcus helped.

Not because I trusted him.

I didn't.

But because he had finally chosen the truth.

And sometimes the truth came from people who had spent years hiding it.

Then Daniel found something.

"Emily.""

I walked over.

He showed me a file.

A medical report.

My father's medical report.

My eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

"This isn't possible.""

Daniel looked serious.

"What?""

"My father didn't die from natural causes.""

The report showed irregularities.

Something that had been missed.

Something that had been changed.

A second doctor's note.

A different conclusion.

"Someone altered his records.""

Marcus looked at the screen.

"Blake.""

Everyone went silent.

Because we all knew.

The pattern.

The same person appearing everywhere.

The same person who was supposed to help.

The same person who always seemed close enough to know everything.

Dr. Aaron Blake.

That evening, Vanessa contacted me.

I almost ignored her.

Then I answered.

"Emily.""

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

"I know about Blake.""

I froze.

"What?""

"He contacted me.""

"When?""

"Before the accident.""

My grip tightened around the phone.

"What did he want?""

She started crying.

"He wanted your father's documents too.""

"Why?""

"I don't know.""

"Vanessa.""

"I swear.""

For once, she sounded honest.

"I didn't understand how big it was.""

I closed my eyes.

"You never understand until someone gets hurt.""

She didn't argue.

"I know.""

A long silence followed.

Then she said:

"There is something else.""

I almost laughed.

Of course there was.

"What now?""

Her voice broke.

"Dr. Blake wasn't just helping us.""

"What does that mean?""

"He was using us.""

I stood still.

"How?""

"He knew Marcus was desperate. He knew Rachel wanted money. He knew I was scared.""

"And?""

"He pushed all of us in the same direction.""

My stomach turned.

"Why?""

Vanessa whispered:

"Because he wanted what your father had hidden.""

The next morning, Daniel and I went to meet Dr. Blake.

He agreed immediately.

That scared me.

People who had nothing to hide didn't usually agree so quickly.

The hospital looked exactly as I remembered.

The same hallway.

The same waiting area.

The same place where I learned my shoulder might never fully recover.

Dr. Blake entered the conference room with a calm expression.

Like he wasn't facing someone whose life he had helped destroy.

"Emily.""

I stared at him.

"Why did you lie to me?""

He sighed.

"I didn't.""

I almost laughed.

"Everyone says that.""

He sat down.

"Your father was involved in something dangerous.""

"Because of you?""

"No.""

His answer was immediate.

Too immediate.

"Then explain.""

He folded his hands.

"Your father discovered that someone was planning to take control of his estate.""

"Rachel.""

"Yes.""

"And Vanessa.""

"Yes.""

"And Marcus.""

He nodded.

"But they weren't the ones leading it.""

The room went quiet.

"Who was?""

Dr. Blake looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw fear in his eyes.

Not guilt.

Fear.

"Your father never told you the truth because he was trying to protect you.""

"Protect me from what?""

Dr. Blake leaned forward.

"From the person who caused the accident.""

My heart stopped.

"I already know.""

"No.""

He shook his head.

"You know who was in the car.""

He paused.

"You don't know who wanted the car crash to happen.""

The room went silent.

Then he said the name.

A name that made Daniel step back.

A name that made every secret suddenly connect.

Because the person behind everything wasn't Vanessa.

It wasn't Rachel.

It wasn't Marcus.

It was someone I had trusted more than anyone.

Someone who had spent years pretending to protect me.

Dr. Blake looked directly at me.

"Emily...""

May you like

"Your father wasn't investigating them.""

"He was investigating your mother.""
