Chapter 4: The Truth She Buried Three Years Ago
I knew Vanessa was capable of lying.
I had learned that the night she pushed me into the pool.
But I wasn't prepared for the possibility that she had built an entire life around one.
I stared at her across my hotel room.
The ocean breeze moved the curtains behind her, carrying the sound of waves through the open balcony door.
Everything looked peaceful.
Almost cruelly peaceful.
Because my sister was standing in front of me, terrified of a secret that had nothing to do with a pool.
"Tell me," I said.
Vanessa looked down.
"Emily...""
"No.""
My voice surprised both of us.
I had spent years lowering it around her.
Years choosing my words carefully because Vanessa could turn any disagreement into a battle.
But this time was different.
"You came here because you wanted me to understand. So explain.""
She sat on the edge of the chair.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she whispered:
"Three years ago, before Daniel and I met, I made a mistake.""
I crossed my arms.
"A mistake?""
She flinched.
I almost felt bad.
Almost.
"Who is Marcus?""
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"Someone I knew before Daniel.""
"Someone you dated?""
"No.""
The answer came too quickly.
Which meant it was complicated.
"Then what was he?""
She looked toward the window.
"Someone who helped me.""
I waited.
Vanessa hated silence.
It forced her to fill the space.
"He was working at a financial company back then," she said.
"I was struggling.""
"Struggling?""
She laughed softly.
"Emily, you remember.""
I did.
Three years ago, Vanessa had been drowning in debt.
Credit cards.
Loans.
A failed business idea she refused to admit had collapsed.
She told everyone she had it under control.
She always told everyone that.
"I needed money," she continued.
"And Marcus gave it to you?""
She nodded.
"But there were conditions.""
My stomach tightened.
"What conditions?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
She didn't need to.
The fear on her face said enough.
The next morning, Daniel met me outside the resort restaurant.
He looked exhausted.
Like he hadn't slept.
I understood why.
His entire future had changed overnight.
The woman he planned to marry had nearly injured his future sister-in-law, and now there was a mystery involving another man.
"Did she tell you?"" he asked.
I shook my head.
"Not everything.""
Daniel looked away.
"That's Vanessa's favorite strategy.""
"What do you mean?""
"She gives you just enough truth to make you stop asking questions.""
I thought about that.
And realized he was right.
Vanessa had always done that.
When she broke my favorite necklace as a teenager, she admitted she touched it.
She never admitted she had been angry that I received it from our grandmother.
When she told our parents I had forgotten to help with a family event, she never mentioned she had changed the schedule without telling me.
Little things.
Small lies.
But they had always followed the same pattern.
A piece of truth.
A missing piece.
A different story.
"Daniel," I said quietly.
He looked at me.
"Why did you really cancel the honeymoon?""
He didn't hesitate.
"Because I couldn't spend twelve days pretending.""
I looked down.
"You loved her.""
His expression changed.
"I did.""
The honesty hurt.
Not because I wanted anything from him.
But because I knew what it felt like to love someone who didn't deserve it.
"I kept thinking everyone had a bad side," Daniel said.
"I thought Vanessa's was just being dramatic. A little selfish. A little controlling.""
He looked toward the ocean.
"But last night wasn't a bad side.""
"What was it?""
He swallowed.
"It was cruelty.""
Neither of us spoke.
Because sometimes the hardest truths were the simplest ones.
That afternoon, Vanessa finally agreed to meet both of us.
Not because she wanted to.
Because Daniel told her he would leave if she didn't explain everything.
We sat in a private lounge at the resort.
The same place where Vanessa had spent months planning wedding details.
Now, the flower arrangements had been removed.
The champagne glasses were gone.
The room felt empty.
Like the wedding had already ended.
Vanessa sat across from us.
"I know what this looks like.""
Daniel stared at her.
"You don't.""
She looked hurt.
"I made mistakes.""
"Stop calling them mistakes.""
His voice was sharp.
"You're not talking about accidentally breaking a glass.""
Vanessa looked at me.
"Emily, please.""
I stayed silent.
For once, I wasn't saving her.
She took a deep breath.
"Marcus helped me when I was in trouble.""
"Financial trouble?"" I asked.
She nodded.
"He gave me money.""
"How much?""
She hesitated.
"Twenty thousand dollars.""
Daniel's eyebrows lifted.
"And what did you promise him?""
Vanessa looked away.
"I promised I would help him with something.""
"What?""
Her fingers tightened around her cup.
"He wanted information.""
A cold feeling moved through me.
"What kind of information?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
Daniel leaned forward.
"Vanessa.""
Finally, she whispered:
"About your family.""
I stared at her.
"My family?""
She nodded.
"About your father's estate.""
Everything inside me went still.
"My father's house?""
"Yes.""
I stood up.
"You used me.""
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
"No.""
"Then explain it.""
"I was desperate.""
"That doesn't answer the question.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I thought I could fix it.""
"Fix what?""
She looked at me.
And for a second, I saw the sister I remembered.
The scared little girl who used to hide under my bed during thunderstorms.
Then it disappeared.
"I thought if I got access to the property documents, Marcus would erase my debt.""
Daniel's face hardened.
"You were going to steal from her.""
"No!""
Vanessa slammed her hand on the table.
Everyone in the lounge looked over.
"I wasn't going to steal.""
Her voice dropped.
"I was just going to borrow against it.""
I stared at her.
"Borrow against my father's house?""
"Emily, you don't understand.""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"I understand perfectly.""
She looked away.
That was when Daniel asked the question that changed everything.
"Why did Marcus suddenly start contacting you again?""
Vanessa froze.
"What?""
"You heard me.""
Daniel pulled out his phone.
"I checked the number.""
Her face went pale.
"Daniel...""
"Marcus didn't just call you today.""
Silence.
"He has been calling you for weeks.""
Vanessa said nothing.
"Why?""
Her lips trembled.
Then she whispered:
"Because he knows.""
"Knows what?""
She looked at me.
And the fear in her eyes was different this time.
Not fear of being caught.
Fear of something coming back.
"Because Marcus was there the night of the accident.""
My heart stopped.
The room seemed to tilt.
"The car accident?"" I asked.
Vanessa nodded slowly.
"Yes.""
Daniel stood up.
"What are you saying?""
Vanessa covered her face with her hands.
"I never told you because I was afraid.""
"Afraid of what?""
She looked directly at me.
And the answer destroyed the last piece of trust I had left.
"Because the accident that destroyed your shoulder...""
She swallowed.
"...wasn't just an accident.""
Nobody spoke.
The silence was unbearable.
Then Vanessa whispered:
"Marcus knows who caused it.""
And before I could ask the question burning inside my mind, her phone lit up on the table.
A new message.
From Marcus.
Daniel picked it up first.
He read it.
Then his face changed.
Because the message wasn't a threat.
May you like
It was a warning.
*"Tell Emily the truth before I do. She deserves to know why her sister was in that car that night.""*
