Chapter 8: The Secret My Father Took To His Grave

The file sat on the table between us.

My father's name stared back at me.

*Subject: Investigation into Thomas Reed.*

For several seconds, I couldn't understand what I was seeing.

Because my father was the one person in my life I had never questioned.

Not once.

He had been the person who taught me honesty mattered.

The person who told me that family wasn't defined by blood, but by loyalty.

The person who hugged me after every failure and reminded me that mistakes didn't make someone worthless.

Now his name was sitting inside a police investigation file.

"That has to be wrong.""

The officer looked at me sympathetically.

"I understand why you feel that way.""

"No.""

I pushed the folder away.

"You don't understand.""

My voice shook.

"My father died before the accident.""

The officer nodded.

"We know.""

"Then why is his name here?""

He exchanged a glance with Daniel.

That worried me.

Because people only exchanged looks when they knew something they weren't ready to say.

"Emily," Daniel said gently.

I looked at him.

"Maybe we should hear them out.""

I hated that he was right.

I opened the file again.

Inside were financial records.

Emails.

Old documents.

And one photograph.

My father's handwriting was visible on a document dated two months before his death.

I knew that handwriting.

I had seen it on birthday cards.

On notes he left in my lunch when I was younger.

The words beneath his signature made my stomach drop.

*"If anything happens to me, Emily must never receive these documents without knowing the full truth.""*

I looked up.

"What does this mean?""

Nobody answered.

The officer spoke carefully.

"Your father was investigating financial irregularities involving people close to him.""

"Who?""

The officer looked at the file.

"Your aunt Rachel.""

My chest tightened.

Of course.

Rachel again.

But something didn't make sense.

"My father knew?""

The officer nodded.

"He suspected someone close to him was attempting to access his assets.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Then why didn't he tell me?""

Daniel didn't answer.

Because he knew.

I was asking a question nobody could answer.

That afternoon, I went through my father's old belongings.

My mother had kept most of them after his death.

Boxes filled with memories.

His watch.

His old books.

His favorite jacket.

Things that used to bring comfort.

Now they felt like evidence.

Daniel sat beside me on the floor as I opened another box.

"You don't have to do this today.""

I shook my head.

"Yes, I do.""

"Why?""

"Because everyone else knew pieces of my life except me.""

My voice cracked.

"I'm tired of being the last person to know.""

Daniel didn't argue.

Inside the box was an old notebook.

Brown leather.

Worn at the edges.

I recognized it immediately.

My father carried it everywhere.

I opened the first page.

Most of it was normal.

Appointments.

Business notes.

Reminders.

Then I reached the final pages.

The handwriting became messier.

More rushed.

*Rachel cannot be trusted.*

I froze.

The next line:

*Vanessa is being influenced by the wrong people. She is scared and making bad choices.*

My heart tightened.

Even at the end, my father was protecting Vanessa.

I kept reading.

*Emily is the only one I can trust with the truth, but she is too young to carry this burden right now.*

Tears filled my eyes.

Because even when he was afraid, he was thinking about me.

Then I saw the final entry.

The one written three days before his death.

*If I don't get the chance to explain everything, tell Emily this: never confuse forgiveness with allowing someone to hurt you again.*

I closed the notebook.

That sentence felt like he was speaking directly to me.

Not to the girl I was three years ago.

To the woman I was now.

Vanessa found me that evening outside the hotel.

She looked exhausted.

"I need to tell you something.""

I almost walked away.

Then I remembered something.

Despite everything, I needed answers.

"What?""

She took a deep breath.

"Your father knew about me and Rachel.""

"I know.""

Her face changed.

"You know?""

"I found his notebook.""

She looked down.

"I wanted to tell you.""

I laughed quietly.

"Everyone always wanted to tell me.""

She flinched.

"But nobody did.""

The silence between us was painful.

Finally, she said:

"Your father came to me before he died.""

I froze.

"What?""

"He knew I was in trouble.""

I stared at her.

"What did he say?""

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

"He told me he knew I borrowed money from Marcus.""

My stomach turned.

"And?""

"He said he would help me.""

I shook my head.

"Help you?""

"Yes.""

"After everything?""

Vanessa nodded.

"That's who he was.""

That was true.

My father always tried to save people.

Even people who hurt him.

"What happened?""

Her voice became smaller.

"Rachel found out.""

"And?""

"She told me if I accepted your father's help, she would expose everything.""

"Everything?""

Vanessa looked at me.

"The money. The documents. The debt.""

I stared.

"So she threatened you.""

"Yes.""

"And you still worked with her.""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"I was scared.""

There it was again.

The same excuse.

But this time, I saw something different.

Not an excuse.

A confession.

Later that night, Daniel found another piece of information.

He came into my room holding his laptop.

"Emily.""

I looked up.

"What happened?""

He turned the screen toward me.

An old email.

Sent from my father's account.

The recipient was unknown.

The subject line:

*Final Warning.*

I read the message.

*I know what you and Rachel are planning. If you continue, I will report everything. Leave my family alone.*

I looked at Daniel.

"Who was it sent to?""

He clicked the attachment.

A hidden email address appeared.

I stared at it.

Because I recognized the name attached to the account.

It wasn't Marcus.

It wasn't Rachel.

It wasn't Vanessa.

It was someone completely unexpected.

Someone who had been at the hospital after my accident.

Someone who had comforted my family.

Someone who claimed to be helping.

*Dr. Aaron Blake.*

My surgeon.

The doctor who operated on my shoulder.

The doctor who told me I was lucky to survive.

My hands went numb.

"No.""

Daniel looked at me.

"Emily.""

"No.""

I stood up.

"He saved my arm.""

Daniel's expression was serious.

"Maybe.""

The word hurt.

"Maybe?""

He nodded slowly.

"Look at the date.""

I checked.

The email was sent two days before my accident.

Two days before my life changed.

I looked at the screen.

My father had been investigating my doctor.

My doctor had been connected to the people who betrayed me.

And suddenly, the accident didn't feel like the beginning of the story.

It felt like the moment someone tried to erase the evidence.

The next morning, I received a call.

From the hospital.

I almost didn't answer.

Then I saw the name.

Dr. Blake.

My heart started racing.

I answered.

"Hello?""

There was silence.

Then his voice.

"Emily.""

I gripped the phone.

"Why are you calling me?""

Another pause.

Then:

"Because you found the files.""

My blood ran cold.

"What files?""

"Don't lie.""

His voice was different from the one I remembered.

Not gentle.

Not reassuring.

Cold.

"You know the truth now.""

I looked at Daniel.

He immediately understood something was wrong.

"What do you want?""

Dr. Blake exhaled.

"I want to explain.""

"Explain why my father was investigating you?""

Silence.

Then he said something that made my entire body freeze.

"Your father wasn't investigating me.""

"Then what?""

His answer came quietly.

"He was investigating himself.""

I couldn't breathe.

"What does that mean?""

Another silence.

Then:

"Ask your mother why your father died before he could tell you the truth.""

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Because for the first time, I wondered if my father had also been hiding something.

Something bigger than Vanessa.

May you like

Bigger than Rachel.

Something that could change everything I believed about my own family.
