Chapter 5: The Night Everything Changed

I read the message three times.

Not because I didn't understand the words.

Because I couldn't accept them.

*Tell Emily the truth before I do. She deserves to know why her sister was in that car that night.*

My fingers went cold.

The room suddenly felt too small.

The walls.

The furniture.

The sound of the ocean outside.

Everything faded behind one thought.

Vanessa was there.

On the night of my accident.

The night that changed my entire life.

"Emily...""

Daniel's voice pulled me back.

I looked at Vanessa.

My sister looked like she had aged ten years in a few seconds.

For once, she wasn't trying to control the situation.

She wasn't fixing her hair.

She wasn't choosing the perfect words.

She looked scared.

"Tell me," I whispered.

Vanessa didn't move.

"Emily...""

"Tell me why you were in that car.""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I was going to.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"Don't say that.""

My voice cracked.

"Don't stand there and tell me you were going to tell me when you had three years.""

She looked down.

And that silence was an answer.

Three years earlier, my life had split into two parts.

Before the crash.

And after.

Before, I was the person who ran five miles before work.

The person who carried groceries up three flights of stairs without thinking.

The person who believed my sister would always protect me.

After, I became someone who needed help opening jars.

Someone who woke up at night because of pain.

Someone who had to learn patience because my own body had betrayed me.

But I never knew the accident itself was hiding another betrayal.

Until now.

"Start from the beginning," Daniel said.

His voice was calm.

But I could see anger underneath.

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

"Three years ago, I was in trouble.""

I almost laughed.

Of course.

Everything with Vanessa started there.

Trouble.

A problem.

An excuse.

"I had borrowed money from Marcus," she continued.

"A lot of money.""

"Why?""

She looked embarrassed.

"I invested in a company.""

Daniel shook his head.

"What company?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"A business opportunity.""

"That's not an answer.""

She looked away.

"It was a scam.""

The words landed heavily.

She had lost money.

A lot of it.

And instead of admitting it, she borrowed more.

Then more.

Until Marcus became the person she owed.

"He said he could help me get out of it," Vanessa said.

I stared at her.

"By asking about my father's house.""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

My chest tightened.

"But what does that have to do with the crash?""

Vanessa took a deep breath.

"Marcus wanted documents.""

"What documents?""

"Property papers. Financial records. Anything connected to your father's estate.""

I felt sick.

"And you couldn't get them.""

"No.""

"Because I had them?""

She nodded.

The room went quiet.

My father had trusted me with those documents because I was the organized one.

The responsible one.

The one who kept everything safe.

Vanessa knew that.

Everyone knew that.

"Then what happened?""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"I took your car.""

My heart stopped.

"What?""

She looked at me.

"I borrowed it.""

"Without asking?""

She didn't answer.

That was enough.

"You took my car because you thought the documents were inside?""

"I thought maybe they were.""

"And then?""

Her hands started shaking.

"I met Marcus.""

Daniel stepped closer.

"Where?""

"At a parking lot.""

"When?""

"The night of the accident.""

I felt a sharp pain in my shoulder.

Not from the injury.

From the memory.

The headlights.

The rain.

The sound of metal crushing.

I remembered waking up in the hospital.

I remembered my mother crying.

I remembered doctors telling me I was lucky.

I remembered Vanessa sitting beside my bed.

Holding my hand.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

I looked at her.

"After the accident, you came to the hospital.""

She nodded.

"I was scared.""

"No.""

I shook my head slowly.

"You weren't scared for me.""

Her face changed.

"Emily...""

"You were scared I would remember.""

She started crying.

And she didn't deny it.

Daniel asked the question I couldn't.

"What happened on that road?""

Vanessa looked at him.

"I was driving.""

The room went silent.

My breathing stopped.

"You were driving my car?""

She nodded.

"You said you weren't hurt.""

"I wasn't.""

"Then why didn't you tell anyone?""

Her voice became smaller.

"Because I panicked.""

I stared at her.

"Panicked?""

She looked at me.

"I lost control.""

"Why?""

Another pause.

Then:

"Because Marcus was in the passenger seat.""

My entire body went still.

"He was there?""

Vanessa nodded.

"He was angry.""

"About what?""

"He thought I had taken something from the house.""

My stomach turned.

"And then?""

Vanessa looked down.

"We argued.""

"While you were driving?""

"Yes.""

"Vanessa.""

"I know.""

Her voice broke.

"I know.""

She covered her face.

"He grabbed the steering wheel.""

The room became silent.

A horrible, heavy silence.

"What?""

Daniel looked shocked.

Vanessa continued.

"The car moved into the other lane. I tried to correct it. I tried.""

She looked at me.

"But the truck was already there.""

I couldn't breathe.

The accident wasn't just bad luck.

It wasn't a random moment.

It wasn't something that happened to me.

It was something that happened because of choices they made.

"Why did you let me believe you weren't there?""

Vanessa cried.

"Because I was afraid.""

"Afraid of prison?""

She didn't answer.

"Afraid of losing your wedding?""

She looked away.

That answer hurt more than anything.

Later that evening, I sat alone on the beach.

The wedding decorations were still visible in the distance.

A strange reminder of the life Vanessa thought she would have.

Daniel found me there.

He sat beside me.

Neither of us spoke for a while.

Finally, he said:

"I called someone.""

I looked at him.

"Who?""

"The police.""

My heart sank.

"You reported her?""

"I reported what happened.""

I looked toward the water.

"I don't know what I want.""

Daniel nodded.

"I understand.""

"Do you?""

He looked at me.

"My father covered up something serious when I was younger.""

I turned.

"What?""

He stared at the waves.

"He protected someone because he thought family mattered more than the truth.""

"What happened?""

"He regretted it for the rest of his life.""

I was quiet.

"That's why I won't do the same thing.""

His words stayed with me.

Because that was exactly what Vanessa had counted on.

Family.

The idea that I would always forgive her.

That night, Vanessa came to my room one more time.

But this time, she wasn't alone.

Marcus was standing behind her.

The man from the messages.

The man connected to the worst night of my life.

He looked nothing like I expected.

He wasn't intimidating.

He wasn't dangerous-looking.

He was just a man in an expensive jacket with tired eyes.

That somehow made it worse.

"Emily," Vanessa said.

I stepped back.

"What is he doing here?""

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

"You should have told her sooner.""

Vanessa looked furious.

"You don't get to act like you're innocent.""

Marcus ignored her.

He looked at me.

"I came because there is something Vanessa still hasn't told you.""

I felt my heart pound.

"What?""

He took a deep breath.

Then he said the words that changed everything again.

"The crash wasn't the only thing your sister lied about.""

I looked at Vanessa.

Her face went pale.

Marcus continued.

"Three years ago, after the accident, Vanessa didn't just hide that she was driving.""

He reached into his pocket.

Pulled out a small envelope.

And handed it to me.

Inside was a photograph.

One photograph.

A photograph taken moments before the crash.

I looked at it.

And my hands began shaking.

Because in the picture, I wasn't alone.

Someone else was standing beside my car.

Someone I never expected.

Someone from my own family.

May you like

And beneath the photograph was a handwritten note:

*"Ask your mother why she helped Vanessa hide the truth.""*
