Chapter 6: The Person Who Helped Her Hide It

The photograph slipped from my fingers.

I didn't even realize I had dropped it until it landed on the wooden floor beside my bed.

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

I couldn't speak.

I just stared at the image.

Because I knew the person standing beside my car.

I knew the person who had watched Vanessa drive away that night.

My mother.

"That can't be real.""

The words came out before I even realized I had spoken.

Marcus didn't look surprised.

Vanessa looked terrified.

Daniel stood near the door, silent but watching every reaction.

"Emily," Vanessa whispered.

I turned toward her.

"Did Mom know?""

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was the answer.

My stomach twisted.

"Did she know?""

Vanessa wiped her tears.

"Yes.""

The room felt like it tilted.

My own sister.

My own mother.

Two people I trusted more than anyone.

Both of them had known.

Both of them had let me live with a lie.

"Why?""

My voice sounded distant.

"Why would she do that?""

Vanessa looked down.

"Because she thought she was protecting me.""

I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

"Protecting you?""

I pointed toward my shoulder.

"From what?""

Vanessa flinched.

"From losing everything.""

I stared at her.

"You mean from facing consequences.""

She didn't argue.

The next morning, I called my mother.

I didn't tell her Vanessa was there.

I didn't tell her Marcus had shown me the photograph.

I needed to hear the truth from her own mouth.

She answered on the fourth ring.

"Emily?""

Her voice sounded normal.

That hurt.

How could someone sound so normal while carrying something like this?

"Mom.""

There was a pause.

"Are you okay?""

I almost asked her the same question.

But I stopped myself.

Because I already knew the answer.

"No.""

Silence.

Then:

"Is this about Vanessa?""

My heart tightened.

"You know it is.""

Another pause.

Longer this time.

"Emily...""

"I saw the picture.""

Nothing.

Not even a denial.

I closed my eyes.

"Mom, I saw the picture.""

Her breathing changed.

"Where did you get that?""

The question wasn't "What picture?""

It wasn't "What are you talking about?""

She knew.

"You knew.""

My voice cracked.

"You knew she was driving.""

My mother started crying.

"Emily, please listen to me.""

"No.""

I stood up, pacing across the room.

"No, I have listened my entire life.""

My anger surprised me.

Maybe because I had spent years swallowing it.

"Every time Vanessa hurt me, everyone found a reason.""

"Emily...""

"She was stressed.""

"She was young.""

"She didn't mean it.""

I stopped.

"But she almost killed me.""

My mother sobbed quietly.

"I know.""

Those two words broke something inside me.

Because they confirmed everything.

"You knew.""

"Yes.""

I covered my mouth.

I wanted to scream.

I wanted to throw the phone.

Instead, I whispered:

"Tell me why.""

My mother was quiet for so long I thought she had hung up.

Finally, she said:

"Because when I arrived at the hospital, Vanessa was hysterical.""

I said nothing.

"She kept saying she didn't mean for it to happen. She said Marcus grabbed the wheel.""

My eyes moved toward Marcus.

He stood near the balcony, staring outside.

"And you believed her.""

"I was her mother.""

I closed my eyes.

"No.""

My voice was quiet.

"You were my mother too.""

The silence after that sentence was unbearable.

When I returned to the lounge, everyone was there.

Vanessa.

Daniel.

Marcus.

Nobody spoke when I entered.

They could see my face.

They knew.

"My mother confirmed it.""

Vanessa looked down.

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

Marcus nodded.

"I knew she would eventually.""

I looked at him.

"You don't get to act like the hero.""

His expression changed.

"I know.""

"Because you were there too.""

He accepted that.

And somehow, that made me angrier.

"You watched it happen.""

Marcus looked away.

"I made a terrible choice.""

"No.""

I stepped closer.

"You made several.""

He didn't argue.

"You're right.""

Daniel spoke for the first time.

"What happened after the crash?""

That question hung in the air.

Because everyone knew that was the part nobody had explained.

Vanessa sat down.

"I called Mom.""

My hands tightened.

"Not emergency services?""

She shook her head.

"I was scared.""

"You were scared.""

The words tasted bitter.

"I was trapped in a car, injured, and unconscious.""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I know.""

"No.""

I looked at her.

"You don't.""

She looked away.

"I called Mom because I didn't know what to do.""

"And what did she do?""

Vanessa whispered:

"She came.""

"And then?""

"She told Marcus to leave.""

I looked at Marcus.

He nodded.

"She told me if I stayed, we'd all go down.""

Daniel stared at him.

"You listened?""

Marcus gave a humorless laugh.

"I was scared too.""

I shook my head.

Three people.

Three scared people.

And I was the one who paid the price.

That afternoon, I went through the old accident records.

Daniel helped me.

Marcus provided documents he had kept hidden.

Not because he was innocent.

Because he was afraid.

The police report had missing details.

Witness statements that were never included.

A note from a first responder that had been ignored.

The more I read, the more I realized the truth had been buried carefully.

Not accidentally.

Carefully.

Then Daniel found something.

"Emily.""

I looked up.

He was holding a document.

"What?""

"Look at the date.""

I walked over.

The document was from the week after the accident.

It wasn't about the crash.

It was about my father's estate.

My name was on it.

So was Vanessa's.

I read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

Then I felt sick.

Because the accident hadn't just been hidden to protect Vanessa.

It had been hidden because of what happened afterward.

The same week I was lying in a hospital bed, unable to move my arm...

Vanessa had attempted to transfer ownership of my father's house.

Using my signature.

A signature she had copied.

"She forged my name.""

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa started crying.

"Emily...""

I looked at her.

"How long?""

She shook her head.

"I didn't complete it.""

"But you tried.""

"I was desperate.""

I laughed softly.

"Everyone keeps saying that.""

I folded the paper.

"Everyone is always desperate when they hurt me.""

Vanessa covered her face.

"I was going to fix it.""

"No.""

I looked at her.

"You were going to get away with it.""

That night, Daniel made a decision.

"I can't marry her.""

Vanessa froze.

Even though we all knew it was coming, hearing it out loud changed everything.

"Daniel...""

"I'm sorry.""

She stood.

"After everything we've been through?""

He looked at her sadly.

"That's exactly why.""

Her expression collapsed.

"You believe them over me?""

Daniel shook his head.

"I believe what I saw.""

She stepped closer.

"I love you.""

His eyes closed.

"I loved the person I thought you were.""

That sentence destroyed her.

And maybe it should have.

Because love could forgive mistakes.

But it couldn't survive when the truth was hidden over and over again.

Vanessa left without another word.

The door closed behind her.

For the first time in my life, I didn't chase after her.

The next morning, I received an unexpected message.

Not from Vanessa.

Not from Marcus.

From my mother.

It was only one sentence.

*"There is something else I never told you about that night.""*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

*"Your sister wasn't the only person in the car.""*

My hands went cold.

Because I knew what that meant.

Someone else had been involved.

Someone else had a reason to hide the truth.

And when my mother finally revealed the name...

I would understand why everyone had been protecting Vanessa.

May you like

Because the person who helped her cover everything up wasn't just family.

It was someone I had trusted my entire life.
