Chapter 7: The Last Person I Expected
I stared at my mother's message until the screen went dark.
Then I turned it back on.
Read it again.
And again.
*Your sister wasn't the only person in the car.*
My heart was beating so loudly that I could barely hear anything else.
The hotel room around me felt frozen.
The same room where Vanessa had admitted her lies.
The same room where my entire understanding of my family had fallen apart.
I called my mother immediately.
She didn't answer.
I called again.
Still nothing.
"Emily?""
I turned.
Daniel stood in the doorway.
He had been about to knock.
One look at my face told him something was wrong.
"What happened?""
I handed him the phone.
He read the message.
His expression changed.
"She knows.""
I nodded.
"She knows something I don't.""
Daniel sat beside me.
"Who else could have been in the car?""
I didn't answer.
Because there were too many possibilities.
And every one of them hurt.
"My father?""
I whispered the thought before I could stop myself.
Daniel looked at me.
"Your father passed away before the accident, right?""
I nodded.
"Yes.""
"Then who?""
I looked at the message again.
The answer was somewhere.
Hidden in three years of lies.
My mother finally called back two hours later.
Her voice was different.
Not scared.
Not guilty.
Defeated.
"Emily.""
"Who was in the car?""
She didn't answer.
"Mom.""
A long breath.
Then:
"Your aunt.""
I froze.
"My aunt?""
"Rachel.""
My father's younger sister.
The woman who had helped raise me after my father died.
The woman who brought me soup when I was sick.
The woman who sat in the front row at my graduation.
"No.""
The word came out automatically.
My mother started crying.
"I'm sorry.""
"No.""
I stood up.
"That doesn't make sense.""
"Emily...""
"Why would Aunt Rachel be there?""
Silence.
That silence told me there was another secret.
"Mom.""
Finally, she said:
"Because she was the one who found the documents.""
My stomach dropped.
"What documents?""
"The ones Vanessa was looking for.""
I gripped the phone.
"Why would Aunt Rachel have them?""
My mother hesitated.
And that hesitation was worse than any answer.
"Because your father left them with her.""
I felt like the ground disappeared.
My father.
The man who trusted everyone.
The man who always said family protected family.
I sat down slowly.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?""
My mother whispered:
"Because your father knew something was wrong.""
I met my mother at a small café away from the resort.
I didn't want to see her in a place connected to Vanessa's wedding.
I needed somewhere neutral.
Somewhere that didn't hold memories.
When she arrived, she looked older.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like carrying the secret had exhausted her.
She sat across from me.
"I owe you the truth.""
I looked at her.
"Yes.""
She nodded.
"I know.""
For once, she didn't defend anyone.
That almost hurt more.
"Tell me everything.""
My mother folded her hands.
"Your father didn't trust Rachel near the end.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
"He discovered she had been making financial decisions without telling him.""
"About what?""
"The family properties.""
My father's estate.
The same estate Vanessa had tried to access.
I felt sick.
"How does Vanessa fit into this?""
My mother looked down.
"Rachel approached her.""
"Why?""
"Because she knew Vanessa was struggling financially.""
I understood.
My sister wasn't just manipulated by Marcus.
She had been targeted.
But that didn't excuse anything.
"What did Rachel tell her?""
My mother looked at me.
"She told Vanessa that if she could get access to the documents, they could both benefit.""
I couldn't believe it.
"My aunt used my sister.""
"Yes.""
"And Vanessa agreed.""
My mother nodded.
"Yes.""
The answer hurt.
Because even manipulated people still made choices.
"What happened the night of the accident?""
My mother took a deep breath.
"Rachel was supposed to meet Vanessa and Marcus.""
"For what?""
"To exchange information.""
I stared at her.
"The car.""
My mother nodded.
"Vanessa had taken your car because she thought the documents might be inside.""
"And Rachel?""
"Rachel was waiting.""
I looked away.
Three years.
Three years of believing my accident was a terrible coincidence.
It wasn't.
It was a chain of selfish decisions.
When I returned to the resort, I found Daniel speaking with someone near the lobby.
It was Vanessa.
Her eyes were red.
She looked like she hadn't slept.
When she saw me, she immediately walked over.
"Emily.""
I stopped.
"I know.""
Her face changed.
"You know?""
"Aunt Rachel.""
The color drained from her face.
That reaction confirmed everything.
"You knew.""
Vanessa looked down.
"I didn't know she planned everything.""
"But you knew she was involved.""
She swallowed.
"Yes.""
I laughed quietly.
"Of course.""
"Emily, please listen.""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"You keep asking me to listen.""
My voice broke.
"But nobody ever listened to me.""
The lobby became quiet.
Vanessa looked devastated.
Good.
For once, I needed her to understand.
"You watched me rebuild my life after that accident.""
"I know.""
"You watched me struggle.""
"I know.""
"You watched me thank you for taking care of me.""
Tears rolled down her face.
"I know.""
"And you let me.""
She covered her mouth.
Because there was nothing to say.
That evening, Marcus asked to speak with me alone.
I almost refused.
Then I remembered something.
He was guilty.
But he was also the only person who had kept evidence.
"What do you want?""
He handed me a small box.
"I kept this because I knew one day the truth would come out.""
Inside were documents.
Photos.
A recording device.
"What is this?""
"The conversation from the night of the accident.""
My heart stopped.
"You recorded it?""
"No.""
He looked ashamed.
"Rachel did.""
"Why?""
"Because she was planning to use it against Vanessa.""
I picked up the recorder.
"Why keep it?""
Marcus looked at me.
"Because I realized too late that I wasn't protecting myself.""
He paused.
"I was helping people destroy you.""
I pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then voices.
Vanessa.
Rachel.
My blood ran cold.
*Rachel: "If Emily signs the papers, everything will be simple.""*
*Vanessa: "She'll never suspect me.""*
I closed my eyes.
Then another voice appeared.
A voice I didn't recognize.
A man's voice.
Calm.
Confident.
*"And if she doesn't sign?""*
Everyone froze.
Daniel looked at me.
I looked at Marcus.
"Who is that?""
Marcus didn't answer.
The recording continued.
*Rachel: "Then we make sure she can't fight us.""*
My breathing stopped.
A chair scraped.
Someone moved.
Then Vanessa's voice.
Terrified.
*"You said nobody would get hurt.""*
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Because suddenly the biggest question wasn't who lied.
It was who planned everything.
The next morning, the police contacted Daniel.
They had found new evidence.
Evidence connected to the accident.
But there was one problem.
The evidence wasn't in Vanessa's name.
It wasn't in Marcus's.
It wasn't even in Rachel's.
The officer looked at me carefully before speaking.
"Emily, there is one more person we need to question.""
"Who?""
He placed a file on the table.
I opened it.
And saw the name.
The name that made my entire body go cold.
Because it belonged to someone who had been protecting me my whole life.
Someone I never thought I needed to fear.
The file said:
*Subject: Investigation into Thomas Reed.*
My father's name.
The man who had been dead for three years.
And suddenly, I realized the truth was even darker than I imagined.
May you like
Because maybe the secret didn't start with the accident.
Maybe it started long before I was ever in that car.
