Chapter 2: The Phone Call She Never Heard
Vanessa spent the next ten minutes trying to convince everyone that nothing serious had happened.
That was the first thing I noticed after the ambulance team arrived.
Not once did she ask if I was okay.
Not once did she apologize.
She only looked around the terrace, watching the guests whisper, watching the carefully planned wedding weekend she had built begin to crack.
The paramedic carefully supported my shoulder while checking my movements.
"Emily, tell me where the pain is strongest," he said.
"My right shoulder," I answered quietly.
"I had surgery three months ago.""
The paramedic glanced at Vanessa.
"Did someone know about this injury?""
Before I could answer, Daniel did.
"Yes," he said from behind me.
"She knew.""
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
"Daniel, don't make this bigger than it is.""
The paramedic looked between them.
"Ma'am, someone falling into a pool with a recent shoulder surgery isn't something we ignore.""
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
"I already said it was an accident.""
A woman standing near the bar shook her head.
"No, you didn't.""
Everyone turned.
It was Claire, one of Vanessa's college friends.
Her face had gone pale.
"You said it was a joke.""
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"Claire, seriously? You're going to do this right now?""
Claire looked uncomfortable.
"I heard what you said.""
A silence settled over the terrace.
I stared at the ocean behind them, trying to process everything.
My own sister had pushed me.
And now people who barely knew me were defending me.
While Vanessa, the person who shared my childhood, was trying to erase what happened.
The paramedics helped me stand slowly.
My knees felt weak.
Daniel immediately moved closer.
"Take my arm.""
I hesitated.
"You don't have to.""
"I know," he said softly.
"I'm choosing to.""
Those words almost broke me.
Because they were so simple.
And because they were something Vanessa should have done.
As they helped me toward the resort clinic, I looked back once.
Vanessa was standing alone in the middle of the terrace.
Surrounded by people.
Yet somehow looking completely isolated.
For the first time that night, she looked afraid.
The resort clinic smelled like antiseptic and ocean air.
A doctor examined my shoulder while Daniel waited outside the room.
I insisted he didn't need to stay.
He ignored me.
Twenty minutes later, the doctor stepped out with a serious expression.
"Your shoulder hasn't been displaced again, which is fortunate," he said.
"But you aggravated the healing tissue. You're going to need rest and follow-up care when you return home.""
I nodded.
"Thank you.""
After he left, I sat alone for a moment.
My hands were shaking.
Not from pain.
From everything else.
A knock came at the door.
Daniel walked in.
He had removed his suit jacket. His wedding ring was still sitting in his pocket because the ceremony hadn't happened yet.
The sight of that made my stomach twist.
"How bad is it?"" he asked.
"Not as bad as it could have been.""
He exhaled slowly.
"That's not what I asked.""
I looked away.
For some reason, his anger toward Vanessa made me uncomfortable.
Maybe because part of me still wanted to protect her.
She was my sister.
Even after everything.
"Daniel...""
"No.""
His voice wasn't harsh.
Just firm.
"Emily, I need you to understand something.""
I looked at him.
"Vanessa didn't make a mistake tonight.""
The words hit harder than I expected.
"She made a choice.""
I didn't answer.
Because I knew he was right.
Daniel sat across from me.
"She knew exactly what she was doing.""
I swallowed.
"She has always been competitive.""
"Competitive?""
He looked stunned.
"She pushed you into a pool.""
I closed my eyes.
A thousand memories flashed through my mind.
Vanessa getting the bigger bedroom when we were kids.
Vanessa getting praised because she was louder.
Vanessa turning every family gathering into a competition.
But I had always told myself that was just her personality.
A little selfish.
A little dramatic.
Not dangerous.
"I kept making excuses for her," I whispered.
Daniel's expression softened.
"Why?""
I stared down at my hands.
"Because she's my sister.""
He was quiet for a moment.
Then he asked the question I wasn't ready for.
"Has she always treated you like this?""
I didn't answer immediately.
And that was answer enough.
While I was in the clinic, Vanessa was outside trying to fix the damage.
But she wasn't apologizing.
She was managing.
I learned that later from Claire.
Apparently, Vanessa pulled several guests aside and gave each person a slightly different version of what happened.
To one person, it was an accident.
To another, it was my fault because I "stepped backward.""
To someone else, it was just sisters joking around.
She wasn't trying to explain.
She was trying to control the story.
But Daniel already knew the truth.
And he was done listening.
When he returned to the terrace, Vanessa immediately approached him.
"There you are.""
Her voice was softer now.
The angry version of Vanessa was gone.
This was the version everyone loved.
The charming one.
The one who could make people forgive anything.
"Daniel, we need to talk.""
He looked at her.
"Yes, we do.""
She glanced around.
"Not here.""
"Why not?""
Her eyes narrowed.
"Because everyone is watching.""
Daniel gave a quiet laugh.
"Interesting.""
"What?""
"You care that people are watching.""
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"I care about my wedding.""
"No.""
He shook his head.
"You care about looking perfect.""
Her face changed.
"Excuse me?""
"I saw you push her.""
Vanessa lowered her voice.
"Daniel, please. Don't embarrass me.""
That sentence made him go completely still.
Not "Are you okay?""
Not "I didn't mean to hurt her.""
Not even "I'm sorry.""
Just embarrassment.
"You still don't understand," he said.
"What?""
"You aren't upset because Emily got hurt.""
Vanessa looked away.
"That's ridiculous.""
"You are upset because people saw who you really are.""
Her expression turned cold.
"You don't know what you're talking about.""
Daniel pulled out his phone.
"I know enough.""
Vanessa noticed the phone.
"What did you do?""
He didn't answer.
"Daniel.""
He walked past her.
"Daniel, what did you do?""
He stopped.
For one second, I think she saw it.
The end of the life she thought she was about to have.
The luxury honeymoon.
The perfect wedding photos.
The admiration.
All of it slipping away.
"I canceled Maui," he said.
Her face went blank.
"What?""
"The resort confirmed the cancellation.""
Her mouth opened.
Then closed.
"You canceled our honeymoon?""
"Yes.""
"You can't do that.""
"I just did.""
Vanessa laughed.
A strange, nervous laugh.
"You are seriously punishing me over a joke?""
Daniel looked at her.
"No.""
His voice was almost a whisper.
"I'm protecting myself from someone who thinks hurting people is funny.""
The terrace went silent again.
Vanessa looked around, expecting someone to defend her.
Nobody did.
Then her phone started ringing.
She looked down.
The screen showed a name.
A name that made her expression change instantly.
Daniel noticed.
"Who is that?""
Vanessa quickly turned the phone away.
"No one.""
But it was too late.
I saw it from across the terrace when I was being wheeled back from the clinic.
The name on the screen.
A name I recognized.
Because I had seen it before.
In an old message on Vanessa's laptop.
A message she thought nobody knew about.
And suddenly, I understood.
The pool incident wasn't the first time Vanessa had tried to ruin my life.
It was just the first time she had been caught.
The caller kept ringing.
Vanessa stared at the screen.
And Daniel slowly reached out his hand.
"Give me the phone.""
She stepped backward.
"Daniel, don't.""
For the first time that night, Vanessa sounded scared.
Not angry.
Not annoyed.
Scared.
May you like
Because whoever was calling had something to do with the secret she had spent years hiding.
And when Daniel finally saw the name on that screen, his entire expression changed.
