Chapter 9: The Wedding That Never Happened

We arrived at Whitmore Estate shortly before noon.

Arthur had insisted on accompanying us, along with a corporate investigator named Daniel Reeves.

Nathaniel Whitmore met us at the entrance.

The estate looked nothing like it had the previous afternoon.

The pink roses still framed the wedding arch, but several arrangements had begun to wilt.

The champagne glasses had been cleared.

The white tablecloths remained, although the scattered petals from the previous day's ceremony had been swept away.

A few guests were still staying at the estate's hotel wing.

Some had already left.

Nathaniel shook my hand.

"Mrs. Bennett.""

"Thank you for meeting us.""

He looked at Marcus.

"Mr. Bennett.""

Marcus nodded.

"Where is Vanessa?""

"In the private reception room.""

Nathaniel led us inside.

The room was spacious, with tall windows overlooking the gardens.

Vanessa stood near the fireplace.

She wore a cream-colored blouse and tailored trousers.

Her wedding dress was nowhere to be seen.

When she saw Marcus, her face brightened.

"Baby.""

He didn't move.

She looked at me.

Then at Arthur.

Her expression changed.

"Why is she here?""

Marcus answered before I could.

"Because this concerns my mother.""

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"We're supposed to be married.""

"We were supposed to be married yesterday.""

Her lips tightened.

"You're really going to do this?""

Marcus took a breath.

"Did you use my identification to open Bennett Strategic Holdings?""

Vanessa laughed.

"I established an investment structure for our future.""

"Did you transfer company money into it?""

"I managed investments.""

"Without authorization?""

She looked at me.

"Your mother has turned you against me.""

I remained silent.

Vanessa stepped closer to Marcus.

"Do you remember what we talked about? The life we wanted? The properties?

The travel? The freedom?""

Marcus looked at her.

"I remember you telling me my mother was going to retire.""

"She should.""

"She never agreed to it.""

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

"She was going to.""

"Did you forge her signature?""

Vanessa looked toward Arthur.

"Is this some kind of interrogation?""

Arthur answered calmly.

"We're asking you to explain documents submitted in your name and in the name of Bennett Property Group.""

"I don't have to explain anything to you.""

"Then you can explain it to the relevant authorities.""

For the first time, Vanessa looked nervous.

She turned back to Marcus.

"You're making a terrible mistake.""

"Tell me about Gregory Shaw.""

Her expression changed.

"What about him?""

"How long have you known him?""

"He's an investment adviser.""

"That's not what I asked.""

She sighed.

"Three years.""

Marcus stared at her.

"Three years?""

"Yes.""

"Before you met me?""

She didn't answer.

Marcus looked genuinely stunned.

"You told me you met him through a friend last month.""

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"Why does that matter?""

"Because you've been telling me our investment plan was something you developed for us.""

"It was.""

"Then why was Shaw Capital involved before we even met?""

She stepped away.

"Marcus, business relationships are complicated.""

He shook his head.

"No. Lying is complicated. This is just a lie.""

Vanessa's face hardened.

"You know what your problem is? You have never been able to make a decision without your mother.""

I watched my son.

This time, he didn't look at me for reassurance.

He looked directly at Vanessa.

"My problem is that I trusted you.""

She scoffed.

"Trust? I spent months trying to build a future for us.""

"You used my login.""

"I used resources available to me.""

"You used my mother's signature.""

"She was going to sign.""

"Did you use my name to register a company?""

Vanessa folded her arms.

"Someone had to take the initiative.""

Marcus looked at her.

"Did you plan to transfer our properties to Shaw Capital?""

Her eyes narrowed.

"Our properties?""

"Yes.""

She suddenly laughed.

"Marcus, those properties aren't yours.""

The room became silent.

Marcus looked at her.

"Then why did you tell me we were going to own them?""

Vanessa opened her mouth.

No answer came.

I felt something settle inside me.

There it was.

The truth she had spent months hiding.

She had never intended to build anything with my son.

She had intended to use him as a route into my company.

Arthur stepped forward.

"Ms. Cole, we have reason to believe several financial documents were submitted without proper authorization. We have preserved the records and notified the relevant institutions.""

Vanessa looked at him.

"You're threatening me?""

"No. I'm explaining the situation.""

She turned toward Marcus.

"Tell them to stop.""

He shook his head.

"I can't.""

"Yes, you can. You can tell your mother to stop.""

"No.""

Her voice rose.

"Marcus, we are getting married!""

He looked at the empty wedding arch through the window.

"No, Vanessa. We're not.""

She stared at him.

For several seconds, she seemed unable to understand.

Then her expression twisted.

"You can't do this to me.""

Marcus removed a small velvet box from his pocket.

Inside was the engagement ring.

He placed it on the table.

"I don't want to marry someone who lies to me.""

Vanessa stared at the ring.

Then she looked at me.

"This is your fault.""

I met her eyes.

"You threw me out of a wedding I paid for. You forged my signature. You attempted to use my property as collateral. And somehow, I'm still the person you blame.""

She stepped closer.

"You have no idea what I've sacrificed.""

"What did you sacrifice, Vanessa?""

She looked at me with contempt.

"Years of dealing with a woman who can't accept that her son has grown up.""

I nodded.

"Perhaps. But I never asked you to steal from me.""

Her face turned red.

Nathaniel cleared his throat.

"Ms. Cole, I think it's time for you to leave my property.""

She looked at him.

"Excuse me?""

"This estate is mine. Your event has been terminated, and you are no longer an authorized guest.""

Vanessa laughed.

"You can't throw me out.""

Nathaniel remained calm.

"I can, actually.""

She looked around.

No bridesmaids.

No photographer.

No guests applauding.

No Marcus standing beside her.

For the first time, she was alone.

She grabbed her handbag.

Then she pointed at me.

"You think you've won?""

I didn't answer.

She turned toward Marcus.

"You're going to regret this.""

Marcus looked at her quietly.

"Maybe. But at least I won't spend the rest of my life wondering what else you stole.""

Vanessa walked out.

The door slammed behind her.

Nobody spoke.

Marcus stood beside the table, staring at the engagement ring.

Then his shoulders began to shake.

I moved closer.

"Marcus?""

He covered his face.

"I'm sorry.""

This time, I put my arms around him.

He cried against my shoulder.

For several minutes, neither of us spoke.

When he finally stepped back, he wiped his eyes.

"I don't deserve you to forgive me.""

I looked at him.

"Forgiveness isn't a transaction, Marcus. But trust takes time.""

He nodded.

"I understand.""

Arthur approached us.

"There's one more matter we need to discuss.""

I turned.

"What is it?""

He held up a printed email.

"It came from Gregory Shaw's office this morning.""

"What does it say?""

Arthur hesitated.

"Gregory claims Vanessa acted independently. He's attempting to distance himself from the entire arrangement.""

Nathaniel frowned.

"That seems convenient.""

"It gets worse," Arthur continued.

"He claims Marcus personally approved the acquisition structure and authorized the financial transfers.""

Marcus went pale.

"That's a lie.""

Arthur nodded.

"I believe you. But he has documents.""

He placed the email on the table.

"According to Gregory, he has an original recording of a meeting involving Marcus, Vanessa, and himself.""

Marcus stared at the paper.

"What meeting?""

Arthur looked up.

"One that allegedly took place six weeks ago.""

My son shook his head.

"I don't remember any recording.""

Then Arthur read the final line.

If the Bennett family continues making accusations, I will release the recording publicly.

Marcus sat down.

I looked at Arthur.

"Can he do that?""

"We'll need to review the recording, its authenticity, and the circumstances surrounding it.""

I turned toward my son.

"Marcus, did you ever meet Gregory without Vanessa?""

He nodded slowly.

"Once.""

"Where?""

"At his office.""

"When?""

"Six weeks ago.""

Arthur closed the email.

"Then we need to hear what happened in that meeting.""

And at that moment, my phone vibrated.

An unfamiliar number.

A message appeared.

Mrs. Bennett, this is Patricia from Whitmore Estate. I found something else in Vanessa's wedding office. I think you need to see it before Gregory releases that recording.

A photograph followed.

It showed a small black USB drive resting on top of a wedding invitation.

May you like

Beneath it was a handwritten message.

The truth about the bride.
