Chapter 6: The Signature That Changed Everything

Marcus stared at the photograph of the handwritten note.

His face had turned almost gray.

"That's not mine," he whispered.

I looked at him.

"Are you certain?""

"Mom, I swear I never wrote that.""

He grabbed his phone and enlarged the image.

The handwriting looked familiar. The signature at the bottom looked convincing.

But Marcus was shaking his head.

"I've never seen this.""

Nathaniel Whitmore was still on speakerphone.

"Mr. Bennett, I understand this is difficult, but the document was found inside a folder that Vanessa personally delivered to my property manager.""

Marcus stepped closer to the phone.

"Who received it?""

"One of my employees, a woman named Patricia. She was told the folder contained confidential acquisition materials.""

"Can I speak with her?""

"Certainly. But I suggest we do this properly. My office has already preserved the original documents.""

I looked at my son.

"Marcus, don't touch anything else. We need to establish what happened before anyone makes another accusation.""

He nodded.

I could see the panic in his eyes.

For the first time, he seemed to understand that this wasn't simply an argument between his mother and his fiancée.

Someone had attempted to move hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Someone had submitted fraudulent financial documents.

And someone had prepared a plan to take control of a company worth considerably more than the proposed estate purchase.

I called Arthur.

He arrived forty minutes later carrying a leather briefcase and a laptop.

He looked at Marcus, then at me.

"Have you both seen the documents?""

"Yes," I answered.

Arthur placed his briefcase on the dining table.

"Then let's establish what we know.""

He opened the acquisition proposal.

"First, the personal guarantee. Evelyn's signature appears to have been copied from the Midtown transaction. We have the original document, so a forensic comparison should be possible.""

He moved to the next page.

"Second, the attempted reserve transfer. The bank has preserved the authorization records.""

Marcus leaned forward.

"Can they prove I submitted it?""

"They can identify the credentials used, the device, and the authentication process. That doesn't necessarily establish who was physically operating the device.""

Arthur opened another file.

"Third, the handwritten note.""

He placed the photograph beside the unsigned leadership-transfer agreement.

"That requires handwriting examination and confirmation of the original.""

Marcus ran his fingers through his hair.

"Arthur, I didn't sign this.""

"I hear you.""

"Then believe me.""

Arthur looked directly at him.

"Believing you and verifying the evidence are not mutually exclusive.""

Marcus lowered his head.

I appreciated Arthur's restraint.

My son needed someone who wouldn't simply tell him what he wanted to hear.

"There's something else," I said.

I showed Arthur the photograph of Vanessa and Marcus beneath the wedding arch, captioned The future owners of Bennett Property Group.

Arthur examined it.

"Who sent this?""

"An unknown number.""

"Keep the original message. Don't delete anything.""

Marcus suddenly stood.

"I need to call Vanessa.""

Arthur shook his head.

"Not yet.""

"She's my fiancée!""

"And these documents may involve financial misconduct. You need to be careful about what you say and how you obtain evidence.""

Marcus looked at me.

"Mom, I can't sit here while everyone thinks I tried to steal your company.""

I stood too.

"Then help us establish the truth.""

He took a deep breath.

"Fine.""

Arthur called Nathaniel and arranged a meeting at Whitmore Estate the following morning.

Before we ended the call, Nathaniel mentioned something else.

"Mrs. Bennett, my property manager also found an envelope containing a proposed media announcement.""

"What announcement?""

"Apparently, Vanessa intended to reveal that the Bennett family was acquiring Whitmore Estate as part of a new luxury hospitality division.""

I looked at Arthur.

"Did the announcement mention my retirement?""

"Yes," Nathaniel replied.

"It described you as voluntarily stepping away from daily operations.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

"She told me she was going to announce my promotion.""

"She was," Nathaniel said.

"But the announcement also stated that you and your mother had jointly approved the acquisition.""

Marcus shook his head.

"I never approved anything.""

Nathaniel's voice became firm.

"Then you need to understand that your name appears on several documents, Mr. Bennett. My staff cannot simply disregard them because you now say you weren't involved.""

The call ended.

Arthur closed his laptop.

"Marcus, I need you to tell me everything Vanessa has said about the company during the past three months.""

Marcus sat down again.

For nearly twenty minutes, he described conversations I had never known about.

Vanessa had repeatedly suggested that Bennett Property Group was too dependent on me.

She had said the company needed outside investors.

She had mentioned that luxury hospitality was a growing market.

She had introduced Marcus to a financial consultant through a mutual acquaintance.

At first, Marcus had believed the conversations were harmless.

Then she began discussing the possibility of acquiring Whitmore Estate.

"She said it would become the flagship property," he explained.

"A luxury wedding and hospitality destination.""

Arthur wrote something down.

"Did you meet Gregory Shaw?""

"Once. At a restaurant downtown.""

"When?""

"What did he tell you?""

Marcus frowned.

"He said Vanessa had already spoken with you about the acquisition.""

I stared at him.

"And you believed him?""

Marcus looked ashamed.

"She showed me emails.""

"Emails from me?""

"Yes.""

Arthur immediately looked up.

"Do you still have them?""

Marcus searched his phone.

A moment later, he found a conversation.

He handed the phone to Arthur.

The emails appeared to come from my business address.

They discussed the Whitmore acquisition, the proposed leadership transition, and an investment structure involving Gregory Shaw.

But something caught my attention.

The sender address was almost identical to mine.

Almost.

The company name had an extra letter.

Bennettpropertygroup.com.

My actual company domain was bennettpropertiesgroup.com.

One small difference.

One extra letter.

I leaned closer.

"Arthur, look at the sender.""

He examined it.

"That's a fraudulent domain.""

Marcus stared at the screen.

"She sent me fake emails?""

"Apparently," Arthur replied.

"We need the original message headers to determine how they were transmitted.""

I felt a strange mixture of relief and grief.

Relief because perhaps my son had been manipulated.

Grief because he had believed a stranger's carefully constructed story over his own mother.

Marcus looked at me.

"Mom, I swear I thought you knew.""

I didn't answer immediately.

Then I said, "Why didn't you call me?""

He looked down.

"I didn't want you to think I was asking for something.""

"Marcus, you've never needed to earn the right to talk to me.""

His eyes filled.

"I know.""

I wanted to reach for him.

But before I could, his phone vibrated.

A message from Vanessa.

Where are you? You have embarrassed me enough today.

Another message appeared.

If you're with your mother, leave immediately. We need to finish what we started.

Marcus stared at it.

Then a third message arrived.

Gregory says we have a serious problem. The bank has frozen the transfer.

Arthur leaned forward.

"Marcus, don't respond.""

But my son had already started typing.

He stopped.

Then slowly turned the phone toward us.

The message wasn't finished.

It was a draft he had accidentally opened.

At the bottom of the screen was a previous message from Vanessa to Gregory.

If Evelyn discovers the second account, everything is over.

Arthur's expression changed.

"Second account?""

Marcus looked at me.

"What second account?""

Arthur took the phone.

He read the message again.

May you like

Then he looked up.

"Evelyn, I think we need to find out whether your company has another account you don't know about.""
