Chapter 5: The Woman Behind the Wedding

Marcus read the document three times.

His expression changed with every line.

First confusion.

Then disbelief.

Finally, something close to fear.

"She told me you were involved," he whispered.

I placed the phone on the table.

"Then she lied.""

He shook his head.

"She said the purchase was part of your retirement plan.""

"I have no retirement plan involving Whitmore Estate.""

"She said you wanted to move into philanthropy and leave the company to me.""

"Did she show you documents?""

"Yes.""

"What documents?""

He pulled out his phone.

For several seconds, his fingers moved across the screen.

Then he turned it toward me.

A PDF appeared.

The title read:

BENNETT FAMILY SUCCESSION PLAN.

My name was at the top.

Marcus's name appeared beneath mine.

And Vanessa's name was listed as the proposed chief financial officer.

The document described a transfer of executive authority, a restructuring of company assets, and a proposed acquisition of Whitmore Estate.

At the bottom was a digital signature.

Mine.

I enlarged it.

It was the same copied signature from the acquisition proposal.

"Where did you get this?""

"Vanessa sent it to me two weeks ago.""

"Did you ask Arthur to verify it?""

"No.""

"Did you ask me?""

He shook his head.

"She said you wanted it to be a surprise.""

I looked at him.

"Marcus, your father and I taught you better than this.""

He lowered his eyes.

"I know.""

"Then why did you believe her?""

He rubbed his face.

"Because she made it sound reasonable. She said you were tired. She said you wanted more time for yourself. She said I was the only person you trusted to take over.""

I sat opposite him.

"And what did you think I wanted?""

He stared at his hands.

"I thought you wanted me to succeed.""

"I do.""

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

I felt a tiredness settle over me.

"Because success isn't something you inherit by signing somebody else's name.""

He looked up.

I continued.

"Your father and I built this business from nothing. We made mistakes. We lost money.

We worked through nights when the bank balance was almost empty. We learned to protect what we had because nobody else was going to do it for us.""

Marcus swallowed.

"I know.""

"No, you don't.""

My voice wasn't loud.

That made him look even more uncomfortable.

"You know the company has money. You know it owns buildings. You know people answer when you call. But you don't know what it cost to get here.""

He looked away.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then his phone rang.

Vanessa.

He answered.

"Where are you?"" she demanded.

"At Mom's house.""

"Why?""

"We need to talk.""

"About what?""

"The acquisition.""

Silence.

Then Vanessa laughed.

"Marcus, not now.""

"Did you submit a personal guarantee using Mom's signature?""

Another silence.

"What?""

"You heard me.""

"Who told you that?""

"I saw the document.""

Vanessa's voice became sharper.

"You're letting your mother manipulate you.""

Marcus looked at me.

"Did Mom approve the purchase?""

"Of course she did.""

"No, she didn't.""

"Marcus, don't be ridiculous.""

"Did she sign the guarantee?""

Vanessa sighed dramatically.

"We discussed all of this.""

"Did she sign it?""

"She was going to.""

"That's not what I asked.""

Her voice dropped.

"Why are you doing this to me?""

Marcus closed his eyes.

"Just answer the question.""

Vanessa suddenly became louder.

"Your mother is trying to destroy our future because she can't accept that you're finally becoming your own man.""

I watched Marcus.

His jaw tightened.

"Vanessa, I need you to tell me the truth.""

"I have told you the truth.""

"Then why did the bank flag a $450,000 transfer?""

He looked at me.

Vanessa said nothing.

Then the call ended.

Marcus lowered the phone.

"She hung up.""

I nodded.

"Yes.""

He stood and walked toward the window.

"Mom, I don't understand.""

"Neither do I.""

"Why would she do this?""

I looked at the documents.

"That's what we need to find out.""

I called Arthur and put him on speaker.

He listened as Marcus explained the succession plan and the conversation with Vanessa.

When Marcus finished, Arthur spoke carefully.

"Marcus, I need to ask you a few questions.""

"Okay.""

"Did you provide Vanessa with your executive login?""

Marcus hesitated.

"I gave her access to my laptop once.""

"Why?""

"She wanted to review some company documents.""

"Which documents?""

"The property portfolio.""

Arthur sighed.

"Did you know she downloaded them?""

"No.""

"Did you authorize her to contact Gregory Shaw?""

Marcus looked confused.

"Gregory Shaw?""

"The financial consultant listed on the acquisition proposal.""

"I've never met him.""

Arthur paused.

"Did Vanessa tell you she was working with an investment adviser?""

"She mentioned someone who could help with the purchase.""

"Did she say the company would be borrowing money?""

Marcus shook his head.

"No. She said the property would pay for itself.""

Arthur made a note.

"All right. We need to preserve the records and investigate the transactions.""

I leaned forward.

"Arthur, I want to know whether Vanessa has access to anything else.""

"I'll have our security team review all account permissions.""

"Do that.""

He paused.

"Evelyn, there's another matter.""

"What now?""

"I spoke with Nathaniel Whitmore.""

I looked at Marcus.

"What did he say?""

"His staff found a folder Vanessa left in the estate's private business office.""

My pulse quickened.

"What was inside?""

"Several copies of the acquisition proposal. A draft press release. And a list of proposed investors.""

"Investors?""

"Yes.""

Arthur continued.

"One name appears repeatedly. A company called Shaw Capital Partners.""

Marcus frowned.

"I've never heard of it.""

"Neither had I," Arthur replied.

I stood.

"Arthur, send me the list.""

"I will.""

The call ended.

Marcus looked at me.

"Mom, I'm going back to the estate.""

"Why?""

"To talk to Vanessa.""

"Not alone.""

He frowned.

"I need to hear it from her.""

"You can hear it from her with Arthur present.""

He shook his head.

"She's my fiancée.""

"And I am your mother. But right now, neither relationship should replace common sense.""

He looked toward the door.

"I can't believe she would do something like this.""

I walked over and placed a hand on his arm.

"Marcus, I need you to understand something.""

He looked at me.

"Love doesn't require you to ignore evidence.""

His eyes filled with tears.

For the first time that day, I saw the little boy who had once cried in my arms after Daniel's funeral.

"I'm sorry, Mom.""

I didn't hug him.

Not yet.

There were too many unanswered questions.

"Then help me find the truth.""

He nodded.

I opened the email Nathaniel had sent earlier and called him directly.

He answered immediately.

"Mrs. Bennett.""

"Mr. Whitmore, I'm looking at the documents you sent.""

"Good.""

"Arthur mentioned a folder your staff found.""

"Yes. I've secured it.""

"What's in it?""

Nathaniel hesitated.

"There's a draft press release announcing the acquisition of Whitmore Estate by Bennett Property Group.""

"That part I know.""

"There's also a proposed announcement naming Marcus Bennett as the new chief executive of your company.""

Marcus stepped closer to the phone.

"Was Vanessa planning to announce that today?""

Nathaniel paused.

"Yes.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

Nathaniel continued.

"But that's not the most troubling part.""

I gripped the phone.

"What is?""

"There's a second agreement.""

"What agreement?""

"A private partnership agreement between Vanessa Cole and Gregory Shaw.""

"What's the partnership for?""

Nathaniel lowered his voice.

"The acquisition of Whitmore Estate was only the first step.""

I felt the room grow cold.

"What was the second step?""

Nathaniel took a breath.

"According to this document, once the property was purchased, Bennett Property Group's existing real estate holdings were supposed to be transferred into a new investment company.""

I looked at Marcus.

He had gone completely still.

"Who would own that investment company?"" I asked.

Nathaniel answered immediately.

"Gregory Shaw, Vanessa Cole, and a holding company registered under Marcus Bennett's name.""

Marcus shook his head.

"That's impossible.""

I stared at the phone.

"Are you saying my company was going to be taken apart?""

"That's what the agreement appears to describe.""

I felt the pearls against my throat.

Daniel's gift.

The company we had built together.

The future we had imagined for our son.

All of it had become part of someone else's plan.

Then Nathaniel said something that made Marcus sink into the nearest chair.

"Mrs. Bennett, there's one more document in the folder.""

"What document?""

"A proposed authorization signed by your son.""

Marcus stood abruptly.

"I never signed anything!""

Nathaniel continued.

"It bears his signature, and it authorizes the transfer of several Bennett Property Group assets.""

I looked at my son.

His face had lost all color.

"Send it to us," I said.

"I already have.""

My phone vibrated.

An email arrived.

I opened the attachment.

The first page contained Marcus's name.

The second page contained his signature.

But the third page was something neither of us had expected.

It was a photograph of a handwritten note.

The note was addressed to Gregory Shaw.

And it contained a sentence that made my son whisper, "No...""

Once the wedding is over, Evelyn won't be able to stop us.

At the bottom of the note was a date.

Three weeks before the wedding.

May you like

And beside it was a signature.

Marcus Bennett.
