Chapter 2: The Contract Nobody Told Me About
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Whitmore Estate was not an ordinary wedding venue.
It was a historic property outside Atlanta, surrounded by thirty acres of gardens, an ornamental lake, and a restored mansion built in the nineteenth century.
Nathaniel Whitmore had owned it for nearly twenty years.
I had rented it for Marcus's wedding because Daniel had once told me that the gardens reminded him of the English countryside where his grandparents had grown up.
But purchasing the property?
That was something else entirely.
"Mr. Whitmore," I finally said, "I think there's been a misunderstanding.""
"I hope so.""
"Vanessa doesn't own my company.""
"I understand that now.""
"She has no authority to sign anything on my behalf.""
"That is precisely why I called.""
I glanced toward Harold.
He had noticed my expression in the rearview mirror but wisely said nothing.
"What exactly did she sign?"" I asked.
"She submitted a letter of intent for a preliminary acquisition agreement. The document identifies her as the authorized representative of Bennett Property Group.""
My stomach tightened.
"Did she provide financial information?""
"Yes.""
"From my company?""
Nathaniel hesitated.
"That's what concerns me.""
I closed the laptop.
"Please don't accept anything else from her.""
"I won't. But there's another issue.""
"What issue?""
"She told my property manager that you had already approved the purchase and that Marcus would be taking over your business after the wedding.""
I looked out the window.
The estate was becoming smaller in the distance.
"Marcus has never discussed purchasing your property with me.""
"Then I suggest you speak with him.""
"I intend to.""
Before ending the call, Nathaniel gave me his direct number.
"If you need copies of anything submitted today, I'll have my office send them.""
"Thank you.""
After the call ended, I sat quietly.
A purchase agreement.
My company.
My son's bride.
I opened the laptop again and logged into the company's financial management portal.
I had always believed in keeping personal and business accounts separate.
It was one of the reasons Bennett Property Group had survived two recessions.
Every major transaction required two approvals.
Every acquisition needed a board resolution.
And no executive, including Marcus, could authorize a multimillion-dollar purchase without my signature.
I opened the pending transactions.
There it was.
A request submitted at 10:42 that morning.
PROPOSED ACQUISITION: WHITMORE ESTATE.
Estimated purchase price: $8.4 million.
Authorized representative: Vanessa Cole.
Funding source: Bennett Property Group.
My hands went cold.
I clicked the attached documents.
The first page contained my company's logo.
The second contained a digital signature.
Evelyn Bennett.
But I hadn't signed it.
I enlarged the signature.
It looked convincing at first glance.
Then I noticed something.
The capital E had a strange loop.
I had never written my signature that way.
Someone had copied it from an old document.
I called my attorney.
"Arthur, I need you to look at something immediately.""
Arthur Mitchell had been our family attorney for seventeen years.
He had prepared Daniel's will, handled the company's incorporation, and represented me through several major acquisitions.
He answered on the second ring.
"Evelyn?""
"Someone has submitted an unauthorized purchase proposal using my signature.""
"Who?""
"Vanessa Cole.""
Silence.
Then Arthur said, "Where are you?""
"In Harold's car.""
"Don't confront her yet. Send me the document.""
I forwarded the files.
He called back less than five minutes later.
"This signature appears to be copied.""
"I know.""
"Have you authorized Marcus to negotiate the acquisition?""
"No.""
"Has he been discussing it with you?""
"Not once.""
Arthur exhaled.
"Then we need to secure the company's records immediately.""
I looked at the dashboard.
"Can you freeze any pending acquisition requests?""
"Yes. I'll issue an internal restriction notice and contact our compliance officer.""
"Do it.""
"Evelyn, there's something else.""
"What?""
"Your son called me yesterday.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
"He asked whether you had prepared any documents transferring controlling shares to him.""
My mouth went dry.
"What did you tell him?""
"That no such documents existed.""
I closed my eyes.
Marcus had been planning something.
For how long?
"Arthur, did he say why?""
"He said he wanted to make sure everything was ready before the wedding.""
I felt a strange pressure behind my ribs.
"Ready for what?""
Arthur didn't answer immediately.
Then he said, "He mentioned Vanessa was interested in becoming more involved in the company.""
I laughed once, without humor.
"She works in luxury event marketing.""
"That doesn't automatically make her qualified to run a property group.""
"Exactly.""
Arthur's voice became firmer.
"Listen to me. Don't sign anything. Don't authorize any transfers. And don't let either of them access your personal office.""
"I understand.""
"Are you safe?""
"Yes.""
"Good. I'll call you again shortly.""
The line went dead.
I looked at the pearls around my neck.
Daniel had always told me that trust should be given carefully, but once given, it should be protected.
I had trusted Marcus.
That was why this hurt.
Harold turned onto the highway.
"Home, Mrs. Bennett?""
I nodded.
But before he could accelerate, my phone rang again.
Marcus.
This time, I answered.
"Mom!""
His voice was loud and breathless.
"Where are you?""
"Leaving the estate.""
"What did you do?""
I looked at the dashboard.
"What are you referring to?""
"The caterer just told us they aren't serving dinner.""
"That's correct.""
"Mom, there are a hundred guests here!""
"I know how many guests are there. I paid the deposits.""
"Then why would you cancel everything?""
I stared at the phone.
"Because I was asked to leave.""
He exhaled sharply.
"Vanessa was upset. You know how stressed she's been.""
"Marcus, she threw the flowers out of my hand.""
"She didn't mean it like that.""
"She told me my dead husband's memory didn't matter.""
Silence.
Then he said, "You know Vanessa can be emotional.""
I almost laughed.
"Emotional?""
"Please don't turn this into something bigger than it is.""
I looked at the pearls again.
"Your fiancée submitted an $8.4 million acquisition proposal using my signature.""
The silence on the other end changed.
It became heavier.
"What?""
"She used my name to submit a purchase proposal for Whitmore Estate.""
"That's not possible.""
"Then perhaps you should ask her.""
"Mom, I don't know what you're talking about.""
"Do you know about the proposed purchase?""
He hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
"Marcus?""
"I need to talk to Vanessa.""
"That isn't an answer.""
"Mom, this is not the time.""
I closed my eyes.
"Apparently, there is never a time.""
He lowered his voice.
"Please don't ruin my wedding.""
I felt something crack inside me.
"Marcus, I didn't ruin your wedding. I simply stopped paying for it.""
Then I ended the call.
Harold drove in silence.
When we reached my home, I went straight to Daniel's study.
I hadn't changed anything since his death.
His leather chair remained beside the window. His old reading glasses sat on the desk. A framed photograph of him and Marcus rested near the lamp.
I picked it up.
Marcus was ten in the photograph.
He was missing a front tooth and laughing so hard his eyes were closed.
Daniel had his arm around him.
I sat in the chair.
"Where did I lose him?"" I whispered.
My phone vibrated.
An email from Arthur.
Subject: URGENT — UNAUTHORIZED ACQUISITION DOCUMENTS.
I opened it.
Attached were the purchase proposal, the copied signature, and a second document I hadn't seen before.
A proposed corporate authorization.
It stated that Marcus Bennett would become managing director of Bennett Property Group immediately following the wedding.
And below his name was another line.
Proposed chief financial officer: Vanessa Cole.
I stared at the screen.
She wasn't just trying to buy an estate.
She was trying to put herself inside my company.
Then another notification appeared.
It was a photograph from an unknown number.
Vanessa stood beside Marcus in front of the wedding arch.
She was smiling.
He was smiling too.
May you like
But the caption beneath the photograph made my blood run cold.
The future owners of Bennett Property Group.
