Chapter 3: The Bride's Secret Investment

The photograph stayed on my screen long after the phone stopped vibrating.

Vanessa's white wedding dress shimmered beneath the afternoon sunlight.

Marcus stood beside her, one hand resting on her waist.

They looked like a happy couple.

They looked like people celebrating the beginning of a beautiful life.

And beneath the photograph, someone had written that they were the future owners of my company.

I forwarded it to Arthur.

Then I called Celeste.

"Mrs. Bennett," she answered immediately.

"I'm so sorry.""

"What's happening at the estate?""

She hesitated.

"There's confusion.""

"Tell me.""

"The caterer has stopped preparing the remaining meals. The band has packed its equipment. Several guests are asking whether the reception is still happening.""

"And Vanessa?""

"She's furious.""

I leaned back.

"What is she saying?""

"She's telling people you had a breakdown and canceled the wedding out of spite.""

I closed my eyes.

Of course she was.

"Celeste, did you hear her say that?""

"Yes.""

"Did anyone else?""

"Several people.""

"Please preserve all communications regarding the vendor cancellations and any instructions you received from Vanessa.""

"I will.""

"One more thing. Did Vanessa ask you to provide company documents?""

Celeste went quiet.

Then she said, "Actually, yes.""

"When?""

"Yesterday afternoon. She asked whether I had a copy of your business registration because she wanted to include it in the wedding presentation.""

My eyebrows drew together.

"What wedding presentation?""

Celeste sighed.

"She said there would be a surprise announcement after the ceremony.""

"What kind of announcement?""

"She called it a family legacy announcement.""

I stood up.

"Did she tell you what it involved?""

"She mentioned that Marcus would be taking over the company.""

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"Did she say I had approved it?""

"Yes.""

I stared at the framed photograph on Daniel's desk.

"Celeste, did you provide her with anything?""

"No. I told her I wasn't authorized to release your business information.""

"Thank you.""

I ended the call.

For a moment, I simply stood there.

Then I walked to the filing cabinet behind Daniel's desk.

The bottom drawer contained the original corporate documents, property deeds, shareholder agreements, and several sealed envelopes.

I found the folder marked BENNETT PROPERTY GROUP — GOVERNANCE.

The company's ownership structure was straightforward.

I held the majority of voting shares.

Marcus held a minority interest that Daniel and I had established for him years earlier.

He could participate in management.

He could not sell the company, transfer controlling shares, or authorize a multimillion-dollar acquisition without the required approvals.

And Vanessa had no ownership whatsoever.

I photographed the relevant pages and sent them to Arthur.

He called almost immediately.

"Good. These are important.""

"Can you confirm whether Vanessa has any legal authority?""

"None that I can identify.""

"Then why would she submit a document claiming otherwise?""

"That is something we need to investigate.""

I walked toward the window.

The sun was beginning to lower over the garden.

"Arthur, I want to know how she got my signature.""

"I'll check the source documents.""

"And I want to know who gave her access to the company's financial information.""

"Understood.""

He paused.

"Evelyn, I don't want to alarm you unnecessarily, but I found something else.""

"What?""

"The acquisition proposal wasn't the first document submitted.""

My stomach tightened.

"What do you mean?""

"There's a preliminary credit inquiry associated with the proposed purchase.""

"Who authorized it?""

"The submission lists Bennett Property Group as the borrower.""

I sat down.

"Did the bank approve it?""

"No. They requested additional verification.""

"Thank God.""

Arthur continued.

"The inquiry was submitted through a financial consultant named Gregory Shaw.""

I searched my memory.

I didn't know anyone by that name.

"Who is he?""

"According to the paperwork, he's an independent adviser retained by Vanessa Cole.""

I felt my pulse quicken.

"How did she get company financial statements?""

"That's what we're trying to establish.""

A knock interrupted us.

I looked toward the hallway.

"Arthur, someone is at my door.""

"Don't sign anything. I'll call you back.""

I ended the call and walked downstairs.

A courier stood outside holding a large cream-colored envelope.

"Mrs. Evelyn Bennett?""

"Yes.""

"I have a delivery requiring your signature.""

I looked at the envelope.

There was no company logo.

Only my name, printed in elegant black lettering.

"Who sent it?""

"Mr. Marcus Bennett.""

I took the envelope.

The courier left.

I opened it inside the foyer.

The first page was a letter.

Mom,

I know today has been difficult. Vanessa and I don't want our wedding to end this way. We need you to understand that we're trying to build something bigger than ourselves.

I frowned.

I continued reading.

The company needs fresh leadership. You've worked hard for decades, but it's time to step back. Vanessa has helped me see opportunities you may have overlooked.

The letter continued for another page.

It described a proposed transition in which I would remain as chairwoman while Marcus became managing director.

Vanessa would oversee strategic development.

At the bottom was a signature line.

My signature.

Or rather, a place for it.

I almost laughed.

They had sent me a resignation and leadership-transfer document on the day they threw me out of my own son's wedding.

I placed the papers on the dining table.

Then I noticed a handwritten note attached to the last page.

Please sign tonight so we can announce the transition tomorrow.

I took a photograph.

Then I called Marcus.

He answered after the fourth ring.

"Mom?""

"Did you send me a document asking me to transfer company leadership?""

Silence.

"Marcus?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because we've talked about this.""

"No, we haven't.""

"Mom, we've discussed me taking a bigger role.""

"You already have an executive position.""

"I mean full control.""

I looked at the papers.

"Why does Vanessa's name appear as chief financial officer?""

"She has experience.""

"She has never worked in corporate finance.""

"She understands business.""

"Does she?""

His voice hardened.

"Why are you making this so difficult?""

I closed my eyes.

"Because you are asking me to hand over the company I built.""

"You won't lose anything.""

"Then why does the document require me to resign as managing director?""

He sighed.

"Because that's how transitions work.""

"Did you write this?""

"No. Vanessa prepared it.""

That answer told me everything.

"Marcus, did you know she submitted an acquisition proposal using my signature?""

He paused.

Then said, "She told me it was just preliminary paperwork.""

"Did you know my signature was copied?""

"No.""

"Did you know she had listed herself as an authorized representative?""

Another pause.

"Mom, you're overreacting.""

I stared at the letter.

"Do you know what your father would say about this?""

"Don't bring Dad into it.""

The words were sharp.

I went still.

"Why not?""

"Because you're always using him to make me feel guilty.""

I slowly placed the phone on speaker.

"Marcus, I have never used your father to make you feel guilty.""

"You bring him up whenever you disagree with me.""

"Your father built this company with me.""

"And you think that means I can never change anything?""

"I think it means you should respect the work that built it.""

He exhaled.

"Vanessa says you don't know how to let go.""

I looked toward Daniel's photograph.

"Then Vanessa should learn the difference between letting go and being robbed.""

Marcus went silent.

Finally, he said, "I'll talk to you tomorrow.""

The call ended.

I remained at the dining table.

The house was quiet.

Then my phone rang again.

Arthur.

"Evelyn, I found the source of the signature.""

"What is it?""

"An old acquisition document from four years ago.""

"Which document?""

"The sale of the Midtown office building.""

I remembered signing dozens of documents during that transaction.

"Who had access to it?""

Arthur paused.

"Marcus requested a digital copy last month.""

My throat tightened.

"Why?""

"He told my assistant he needed it for a family investment proposal.""

I looked at the unsigned resignation document.

"Arthur, I think this is bigger than the wedding.""

"I agree.""

May you like

Then he said something that made me grip the edge of the table.

"Evelyn, I just received a call from the bank. Someone has attempted to transfer $450,000 from the company's reserve account.""
