Chapter 7: The Account Hidden in My Name
The next morning, I arrived at Bennett Property Group before sunrise.
The building stood in downtown Atlanta, a twenty-story glass tower that Daniel and I had purchased when the company was still growing.
I remembered standing outside it for the first time with him.
He had put his arm around my shoulders.
"One day, Evie, our son will walk into this building knowing he helped build something meaningful.""
I had believed him.
Now, as I entered the lobby, I wondered whether Marcus would ever look at the building the same way again.
Margaret Ellis was waiting in the executive conference room.
Arthur sat beside her.
A cybersecurity consultant named Daniel Reeves had joined them remotely.
Marcus arrived ten minutes later.
He hadn't slept.
His wedding ring was still on his finger.
Vanessa's ring.
I noticed he kept turning it around.
"Good morning," Margaret said.
I sat at the head of the table.
"Let's begin.""
Daniel Reeves shared his screen.
"We've reviewed the access logs from the past six weeks.""
He displayed a timeline.
"Several confidential files were accessed through Marcus Bennett's executive account. The activity originated from three devices.""
Marcus leaned forward.
"One is my laptop.""
"Correct. The second is a mobile device. The third is a Windows computer that doesn't appear in our registered inventory.""
"Whose computer?""
"We're still identifying it.""
Margaret folded her hands.
"Could it have been Vanessa's?""
"Possibly. But we need more evidence.""
Arthur opened a folder.
"Have you identified the source of the second account?""
Daniel Reeves nodded.
"Yes.""
A new screen appeared.
It showed a business banking account opened under the name Bennett Strategic Holdings LLC.
My heart skipped.
"Who owns it?""
"The registered organizer is Marcus Bennett.""
Marcus stood.
"What?""
Arthur looked at the screen.
"Marcus, did you create this company?""
"No.""
"Did you authorize anyone to create it?""
"No.""
Daniel Reeves continued.
"The company was registered five weeks ago. The banking account was opened three days later.""
I stared at the screen.
"How much money is in it?""
"Currently, approximately $127,000.""
"Where did that money come from?""
"We're tracing the deposits.""
Marcus sat down slowly.
"I didn't create that company.""
Arthur looked at him.
"Do you have any idea how someone obtained your identification documents?""
Marcus shook his head.
"Vanessa handled most of the paperwork for our wedding. She asked for copies of my driver's license and passport because she said the estate needed them for insurance and guest registration.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Did you give them to her?""
"Yes.""
Margaret looked troubled.
"Did she also have access to your company identification documents?""
Marcus nodded.
"She helped me organize some personal files.""
Arthur made another note.
"That may explain how the company was registered, but we need the original application and electronic audit records.""
I turned to Margaret.
"Can the account receive money from our company?""
"It appears to have been used as an intermediary account.""
"An intermediary?""
"Money comes in from one source and is then transferred elsewhere.""
"Has any company money gone into it?""
Margaret hesitated.
"Not from the accounts we directly control.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
She opened another report.
"Three payments were submitted through one of our property management subsidiaries. They were listed as consulting expenses.""
The amounts appeared on the screen.
$38,000.
$42,000.
$47,000.
Total: $127,000.
I stared at the numbers.
"Who approved these payments?""
Margaret checked the records.
"Marcus's department submitted them. But the final authorization was processed using a delegated approval token.""
Marcus looked horrified.
"I didn't approve those.""
"Your credentials were used," Margaret said gently.
He shook his head.
"I don't remember seeing them.""
Arthur raised a hand.
"Let's not jump to conclusions. We need the payment requests, invoices, and approval logs.""
I looked at the invoice descriptions.
Strategic consulting.
Market research.
Investment advisory.
All three listed Gregory Shaw's company.
I turned to Margaret.
"Have we ever hired this consultant?""
"No.""
"Have we ever approved these services?""
"No.""
Arthur closed the file.
"That gives us a starting point.""
I looked at Marcus.
"Did Vanessa ever ask you to sign blank forms?""
He hesitated.
Then his expression changed.
"She did.""
"When?""
"About three weeks ago.""
"What did she say?""
"She said the estate required additional authorization paperwork. She brought a stack of documents to the house.""
"Did you read them?""
Marcus looked ashamed.
"Not all of them.""
I felt a coldness spread through me.
"Marcus.""
"I know.""
"Your father used to say that the most expensive mistakes are often made by people who are too embarrassed to ask questions.""
He stared at the table.
"I thought I was being responsible.""
Arthur leaned forward.
"Where are those documents now?""
"At the estate, I think. Vanessa kept the folder.""
"Do you have any copies?""
"No.""
Daniel Reeves interrupted.
"There's another finding.""
We turned toward the screen.
"The second account has been linked to a registered investment company called Shaw Capital Partners.""
A company profile appeared.
Registered office: a commercial address in Atlanta.
Managing partner: Gregory Shaw.
Associated entity: Bennett Strategic Holdings LLC.
And another name appeared beneath it.
Vanessa Cole.
I read the details twice.
"How much money has Shaw Capital received?""
Daniel checked his report.
"Approximately $610,000 in transactions over the past four months.""
Marcus looked up.
"From where?""
"Several sources. Some are linked to legitimate businesses. Others remain under review.""
I felt my hands go cold.
"Does any of it come from us?""
"Not directly from the main operating account. However, there are suspicious transactions involving two subsidiaries.""
Arthur closed his notebook.
"We need to report the unauthorized activity and preserve all evidence. The company should not attempt to recover money through private transfers or confront the individuals involved without legal guidance.""
I nodded.
"Proceed.""
Marcus stared at the screen.
"How could she do this?""
Nobody answered.
Then his phone rang.
Vanessa.
He looked at me.
"Should I answer?""
Arthur nodded.
"Put it on speaker. Don't make accusations. Just listen.""
Marcus answered.
"Hello?""
"Where have you been?"" Vanessa demanded.
"At the office.""
"With your mother?""
"Yes.""
She laughed bitterly.
"Of course.""
Marcus took a breath.
"Vanessa, we need to talk.""
"About what?""
"The second company.""
Silence.
Then she said, "Who told you about that?""
Marcus closed his eyes.
"So it's real.""
"Marcus, listen to me. Your mother is trying to turn you against me.""
"Did you open a company in my name?""
"I was protecting our future.""
"Did you transfer money into it?""
"That money was allocated for investments.""
"Without my permission?""
Vanessa's voice became colder.
"Don't pretend you don't understand business.""
Marcus stared at the table.
"I didn't authorize those transfers.""
"You approved the strategy.""
"No, I didn't.""
She sighed.
"You're making a terrible mistake.""
"Vanessa, what is Shaw Capital doing with our money?""
"Your money?""
"Yes.""
"Our money, Marcus. We're getting married.""
He looked at me.
Then he said quietly, "Not anymore.""
The room went silent.
Vanessa's voice sharpened.
"What did you just say?""
"I said I need the truth.""
"You want the truth? Fine. Your mother has spent your entire life making sure you never become more important than her.""
I watched my son.
He didn't interrupt.
Vanessa continued.
"She gives you a title but never real power. She lets you sit in meetings but makes every decision. She calls it love, but it's control.""
Marcus's fingers tightened around the phone.
"Did you forge her signature?""
"She was going to sign everything anyway.""
"That's not an answer.""
"Marcus, stop.""
"Did you?""
A long silence followed.
Then Vanessa said something I would never forget.
"I did what I had to do because you weren't strong enough to do it yourself.""
Marcus slowly lowered his head.
Arthur gestured for him to continue listening.
"Where is Gregory?"" Marcus asked.
"Why?""
"I want to speak with him.""
"He's handling the investment.""
"Where is he?""
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she laughed.
"You're not ready to understand what we've built.""
The call ended.
Marcus sat motionless.
I reached across the table.
He looked at my hand but didn't take it.
"Mom, I think I was about to marry someone who never loved me.""
I swallowed.
"Perhaps she loved what she believed you could give her.""
His eyes filled.
"How could I be so blind?""
I didn't have an answer.
Then Daniel Reeves spoke.
"There's one more thing.""
He displayed a new report.
The second account had received a transfer the previous evening.
Not $127,000.
Not $450,000.
A much larger payment.
$2.3 million.
The sender was an unfamiliar investment company.
But the transfer reference contained a description that made Arthur immediately sit forward.
"That can't be right.""
I looked at him.
"What?""
Arthur pointed to the screen.
"That's the escrow reference for one of your company's commercial properties.""
I stared at the transaction.
May you like
Someone had attempted to use one of my properties as collateral.
And the person listed as the authorized representative was...
