Chapter 8: The Son Who Finally Opened His Eyes
Marcus stood so quickly that his chair fell backward.
"That's impossible!""
Arthur examined the transaction details.
"Sit down, Marcus.""
"No! I have never authorized anyone to use that property!""
Margaret brought up the property records.
The building was located in Midtown Atlanta.
It was one of Bennett Property Group's most valuable commercial assets.
Daniel and I had purchased it twelve years earlier.
The property generated substantial rental income and had never carried a mortgage.
It was also the building where Marcus had once celebrated his first promotion.
Now someone had attempted to use it as collateral for a $2.3 million financing arrangement.
I looked at Arthur.
"Can they do that without my signature?""
"They shouldn't be able to. The property is owned by a separate subsidiary, and any secured borrowing requires formal authorization.""
"Who submitted the application?""
Arthur examined the document.
"Shaw Capital Partners.""
"Who represented the property owner?""
He turned the screen toward us.
The name appeared.
Marcus Bennett.
My son sank into his chair.
"Mom, I swear...""
I raised my hand.
"I know you need to explain yourself. But first, we need to protect the property.""
Arthur nodded.
"I'll contact the title company and the relevant financial institutions. We'll also have the subsidiary's board records reviewed.""
Margaret picked up her phone.
"I'll suspend any new borrowing requests and revoke the external authorization tokens.""
"Good," I said.
Marcus remained silent.
Then he looked at Arthur.
"Can you check whether Vanessa submitted any other applications?""
Arthur nodded.
"I've already requested a broader search.""
I looked at my son.
"Marcus, I need you to tell us everything you remember about the property.""
He rubbed his forehead.
"About six weeks ago, Vanessa asked me to review some investment opportunities.""
"What opportunities?""
"She said there were commercial properties that could be used to finance a hospitality portfolio.""
"Did she mention Midtown?""
"Yes.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What did she say?""
"She said the building was underperforming.""
"It isn't.""
"I know that now.""
"How much did she say it was worth?""
"About seven million.""
I looked at Margaret.
She nodded.
"That's approximately correct, depending on current valuation.""
Marcus continued.
"She said Shaw Capital could help us unlock the property's equity without selling it.""
"Did you sign anything?""
He hesitated.
"She showed me a document on her laptop. I remember signing a page.""
Arthur looked up.
"What document?""
"She said it was an internal property review.""
"Did it contain borrowing terms?""
"I don't remember.""
I closed my eyes.
"Marcus, you cannot sign documents without reading them.""
"I know.""
He looked devastated.
"I know, Mom.""
For a moment, I saw the same expression he had worn when he was a teenager and had broken Daniel's favorite watch.
But this wasn't a broken watch.
This was a business, a family, and potentially a criminal investigation.
Arthur closed his briefcase.
"Marcus, I need you to provide a written account of everything you remember. Do not delete messages, emails, or files. Do not contact Gregory privately.""
Marcus nodded.
Then he looked at me.
"Can we go somewhere?""
"Where?""
"Somewhere private.""
I agreed.
We walked into Daniel's old office.
The room still smelled faintly of cedar and leather.
Marcus stood beside the bookshelf.
"I need to tell you something.""
I sat down.
"Go ahead.""
He looked at his wedding ring.
"Vanessa didn't start talking about your company after we got engaged.""
I waited.
"It started before that.""
"How long before?""
"About eight months.""
I stared at him.
"Eight months?""
He nodded.
"She asked me what I thought about eventually taking over.""
"And what did you say?""
"I said I wanted to earn it.""
For a moment, I felt hope.
Then he continued.
"She said that was exactly the problem.""
"What problem?""
"She said you would never give me control unless I forced the issue.""
I looked toward the window.
"What else?""
"She started asking about your retirement plans. Your properties. The company's cash reserves. She wanted to know how much control you had over everything.""
My stomach tightened.
"Did you tell her?""
"Some things.""
"How much?""
He looked ashamed.
"More than I should have.""
I sat very still.
He continued.
"She told me that after we got married, we would have our own future. That I wouldn't always be living under your shadow.""
"Marcus, you have never lived under my shadow.""
"I know that now.""
He sat across from me.
"She said I was thirty-three and still waiting for permission to become a man.""
I looked at him.
"Is that what you believed?""
He nodded.
"Sometimes.""
I felt tears sting my eyes.
"Your father would have been heartbroken.""
Marcus covered his face.
"Please don't.""
I didn't say anything.
After a moment, he lowered his hands.
"I thought if I could take over the company, you'd finally be proud of me.""
I stared at him.
"Marcus, I have been proud of you since the day you were born.""
His face crumpled.
I continued.
"You didn't need eight million dollars. You didn't need a mansion. You didn't need to prove you were more powerful than me.""
He began to cry.
"I know.""
"I only needed you to be honest.""
He looked at me.
"I don't know how to fix this.""
"Start by telling the truth.""
He nodded.
Then he slowly removed Vanessa's engagement ring.
He placed it on Daniel's desk.
"I can't marry her.""
I looked at the ring.
"Are you sure?""
He nodded.
"I should have listened when she humiliated you.""
I swallowed.
"That decision belongs to you. Not me.""
He looked surprised.
"You don't want me to end it?""
"I want you to understand why you're ending it. Not because you're afraid of losing money. Not because I'm angry. Because you deserve a marriage built on honesty.""
He wiped his face.
"I thought she loved me.""
"Perhaps you loved the person she allowed you to see.""
My phone vibrated.
Arthur.
I answered.
"Evelyn, we have a development.""
"What happened?""
"The title company has confirmed that the Midtown property was used in a preliminary financing application. However, the lender has not released funds.""
"Thank goodness.""
"There's also a second property listed in the application.""
I sat straighter.
"Which one?""
"The residential development in Buckhead.""
I closed my eyes.
That project was nearly complete.
Its value exceeded twelve million dollars.
"Was the property actually pledged?""
"No. The lender identified inconsistencies in the authorization documents.""
I exhaled.
"How many applications were submitted?""
Arthur paused.
"At least three.""
I looked at Marcus.
He was listening.
"What's the third?""
Arthur answered.
"Your personal residence.""
For a moment, I couldn't speak.
My home.
The house Daniel and I had purchased when Marcus was six.
The house where we had celebrated birthdays, Christmas mornings, and every milestone of our lives.
Someone had attempted to use it as collateral.
"Arthur, was my signature forged again?""
"Yes.""
Marcus stood.
"That's enough.""
His voice was different now.
There was anger in it.
Not the anger of someone defending himself.
The anger of someone finally understanding what had been done.
"Mom, I'm going to the estate.""
Arthur immediately objected.
"Marcus, I strongly advise against confronting Vanessa alone.""
"I'm not going to hurt anyone. I'm going to ask her why she tried to take my mother's house.""
"Let us handle this through the proper channels.""
Marcus looked at me.
I stood.
"Arthur is right. We will not do anything reckless.""
He nodded reluctantly.
Then his phone rang.
Vanessa.
He stared at the screen.
This time, he answered.
"Hello?""
Her voice was calm.
Almost affectionate.
"Baby, I've been waiting for you.""
Marcus closed his eyes.
"What do you want?""
"To fix this.""
"You tried to use Mom's house as collateral.""
Silence.
Then Vanessa laughed.
"Your mother has been telling you stories.""
"The bank has the documents.""
Her voice changed.
"Marcus, listen carefully. You have no idea what you're doing.""
"Then explain it.""
"I can explain everything, but not over the phone.""
"Where are you?""
"At the estate.""
He looked at me.
Then Vanessa added:
"Come alone. And bring the original corporate authorization documents.""
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
"Why?""
"Because if you don't, Gregory will release the files that prove you were part of the entire plan.""
The call ended.
Marcus slowly lowered the phone.
Arthur looked at me.
I felt the room grow cold.
Vanessa wasn't simply trying to save herself.
May you like
She was threatening my son.
And apparently, she had something that could make him look guilty.
