Chapter 8: The Sister Who Was Never a Sister
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Thomas sat down slowly.
Elizabeth stared at him.
“Are you telling me Vanessa is Harper's daughter?””
Thomas nodded.
“Legally, yes.””
“But why did you call her your sister?””
“Because that's what my parents told me.””
Thomas rubbed his forehead.
“Vanessa was adopted when she was six. My parents never discussed her biological family. They said she had been abandoned and needed a home.””
Marcus examined the photograph.
The little girl beside the hospital bed looked approximately seven years old.
The woman lying in the bed was unfamiliar.
“Who is that?”” Marcus asked.
“My mother.””
Elizabeth's eyes widened.
“Your mother?””
Thomas nodded.
“She died when I was twelve.””
Marcus looked at the photograph again.
The handwritten note was dated six months before her death.
“Why would she write this?””
Thomas stared at the picture.
“Because she knew something.””
He turned it over.
There was another sentence beneath the first.
The woman who brought Vanessa home was not her mother. Find the birth certificate.
Rachel immediately opened her tablet.
“Do you know where the original birth certificate might be?””
Thomas shook his head.
“My parents kept important documents in a safe deposit box.””
“Where?””
“First National Bank. Richmond.””
Marcus looked at Rachel.
“Can we get access?””
“If Thomas is listed as an authorized beneficiary, possibly.””
Thomas nodded.
“I am.””
Rachel made a call.
While she spoke, Elizabeth moved closer to her husband.
“Why didn't you tell me about any of this?””
Thomas looked at her.
“I didn't know the whole story.””
“You knew Vanessa was adopted.””
“Yes.””
“And you knew Harper was involved in your disappearance.””
Thomas lowered his head.
“I didn't know they were connected.””
Elizabeth stared at him.
“You kept so many secrets.””
“I thought I was protecting you.””
“You keep saying that.””
Her voice trembled.
“But every secret you kept became another weapon they used against us.””
Thomas had no answer.
Noah approached, holding his dinosaur.
“Daddy?””
Thomas looked up.
“Yeah?””
“Are you sad?””
Thomas managed a small smile.
“A little.””
“Because you lost your family?””
Thomas's eyes filled.
“Because I almost did.””
Noah thought about that.
Then he climbed onto the sofa beside him.
“You can sit with us.””
Thomas gently placed an arm around his son.
Maya watched them.
She didn't join them.
Not yet.
Rachel ended her call.
“The bank has agreed to release the records under emergency judicial authorization. We need to go to Richmond.””
Marcus frowned.
“Not until we secure the airport.””
“Agreed.””
Daniel entered.
“Sir, there's another development.””
“What?””
“Vanessa has disappeared.””
Thomas stood.
“How?””
“She was released from the airport security office after Whitmore's attorney presented a temporary federal immunity order.””
Rachel's eyes narrowed.
“That's impossible.””
Daniel handed her the document.
She read it.
Then her expression changed.
“This isn't a federal order.””
Marcus took the paper.
The seal looked authentic.
But the signature was electronic.
Rachel shook her head.
“It's a fabricated document.””
“Who authorized her release?””
“The security supervisor.””
Marcus turned toward Daniel.
“Find him.””
Daniel left immediately.
Thomas paced the room.
“She'll go to Harper.””
Marcus nodded.
“Probably.””
Thomas stopped.
“You don't understand. Vanessa knows where the money is. She knows where the original documents are. And she knows the children are the only people who can permanently activate the trust's protection clause.””
Rachel frowned.
“Explain.””
Thomas sat down.
“The trust was established after I discovered the corruption. It wasn't designed to give the children access to money until they turned eighteen.””
“Then what was it designed to do?”” Marcus asked.
“To protect the evidence.””
Thomas looked at Elizabeth.
“If the trust is activated by both parents, the entire record becomes public through an independent legal authority.””
Rachel nodded slowly.
“And the beneficiaries become protected witnesses.””
“Exactly.””
“But if one parent is declared deceased?””
“The remaining parent can be removed as an administrator. The secondary administrator takes control.””
“Vanessa.””
Thomas nodded.
Marcus looked at the document again.
“Then the false death certificate wasn't just a way to steal the money.””
“No,” Thomas said.
“It was a way to permanently silence the people who could expose the operation.””
Rachel's phone vibrated.
She answered.
“Rachel Morgan.””
A man's voice came through.
“Ms. Morgan, this is Detective Aaron Bell.””
Rachel immediately put the call on speaker.
“Where are you?””
“I'm at the airport.””
Marcus exchanged a glance with Daniel.
“Why?””
“I need to speak to Colonel Hale.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“I'm listening.””
Bell took a breath.
“I made a mistake.””
“That's an understatement.””
“I was paid to authenticate the guardianship documents.””
“By whom?””
“General Harper.””
“And the medical reports?””
“Dr. Pierce.””
Marcus's jaw tightened.
“What about the death certificate?””
Bell was silent.
Then he said:
“Thomas Carter's death certificate was created before the convoy explosion ever happened.””
Thomas closed his eyes.
Bell continued.
“The body in the coffin belonged to another soldier. Someone whose identity had been erased.””
Elizabeth covered her mouth.
“Who?””
Bell swallowed.
“I don't know. But I have the original paperwork.””
“Where is it?””
“I'm standing near the arrivals entrance.””
Marcus looked toward the corridor.
“Stay where you are.””
Bell suddenly lowered his voice.
“Colonel, there's something else.””
“What?””
“I wasn't the one who forged Elizabeth's medical report.””
“Then who?””
Bell hesitated.
“Vanessa.””
Thomas stood.
“That's impossible.””
Bell continued.
“She had access to the hospital records. She also provided the false identification used to register Thomas under a different name.””
Rachel frowned.
“Why are you confessing now?””
“Because I just found out something about the money.””
“What?””
“The original account wasn't controlled by Harper.””
Marcus leaned forward.
“Who controlled it?””
Bell's voice cracked.
“Elizabeth Carter.””
Elizabeth froze.
“What?””
Bell repeated himself.
“The trust was registered under Elizabeth's identity. She was the original administrator. Thomas only created the security provisions.””
Thomas stared at his wife.
“That's not possible.””
Bell continued.
“There's a second account. It contains the actual source records. And Vanessa has been trying to access it for years.””
“Where is it?”” Marcus demanded.
Bell whispered:
“Under the name Elizabeth Carter.””
Then a loud crash sounded through the phone.
A scream followed.
Rachel grabbed the device.
“Detective Bell?””
No answer.
“Bell!””
The call ended.
Marcus immediately turned toward Daniel.
“Get to arrivals!””
They ran.
But when they reached the entrance, there was no sign of Bell.
Only a security officer standing beside a fallen suitcase.
And on the floor was a small envelope.
Marcus picked it up.
Inside was a photograph of Elizabeth holding Maya and Noah.
On the back, someone had written:
The children were never the target.

Below it was another sentence.
Their mother is the key.
