Chapter 1: The Woman in the Blue Dress
“Those are my babies! Please, you have to let me through!””
The woman's voice cracked as she stood beneath the glowing Gate 14 sign, her hands trembling so violently that the boarding pass between her fingers fell to the floor.
Maya and Noah were crying now.
Not the quiet, frightened crying they had been doing beside the bench.
They were screaming.
“Mommy!””
“Mommy, we're here!””
Colonel Marcus Hale stepped between the airport officers and the woman in blue.
“Let her through,” he ordered.
The older officer hesitated.
“Sir, we haven't completed the identity verification.””
“Then complete it while she's standing beside her children. You're frightening them.””
The officer exchanged a glance with his partner.
Marcus turned toward the woman.
“Ma'am, what's your name?””
“Elizabeth Carter.””
“Are you the biological mother of Maya and Noah?””
Elizabeth nodded desperately.
“Yes. Yes, I am. They're five years old.
Maya has a small scar above her left eyebrow from falling against our coffee table. Noah has an allergy to certain antibiotics. He's terrified of thunderstorms, and he won't sleep without that ridiculous dinosaur.””
She looked at the green toy lying on the floor.
Then she covered her mouth.
“That's his.””
Noah broke away from Marcus and ran.
Elizabeth dropped to her knees.
Her arms opened just as the little boy crashed into her chest.
“Oh, sweetheart.””
She buried her face in his hair.
“Oh, my baby. My beautiful boy.””
Maya followed, wrapping both arms around her mother's neck.
For several seconds, the terminal seemed to disappear.
There were no boarding announcements, no rolling suitcases, no impatient passengers.
Only a mother holding her children as if somebody might take them away again.
Marcus watched quietly.
Then he noticed something.
Elizabeth wasn't looking at the children.
She was looking over their shoulders.
Toward the entrance to the terminal.
Her eyes kept moving between the security checkpoint and the windows.
“Ma'am,” Marcus said gently.
“You're safe for the moment. Can you tell me what happened?””
Elizabeth pulled back.
“Where is she?””
“Who?””
“Vanessa.””
The name made Maya immediately bury her face against her mother's shoulder.
Elizabeth noticed.
Her expression changed.
“What did she tell you?””
Maya shook her head.
“Sweetheart,” Elizabeth whispered, brushing the girl's hair away from her forehead.
“You can tell me.””
“Vanessa said you weren't our mommy anymore.””
Elizabeth closed her eyes.
A tear slipped down her cheek.
“Oh, Maya.””
“She said you were bad,” Noah added.
“She said you left us.””
Elizabeth pressed both children against her.
“I never left you. Not for one second. I have been looking for you every day.””
Marcus exchanged a glance with Lieutenant Daniel Reeves.
“Ma'am, I need you to explain who Vanessa is.””
Elizabeth swallowed.
“She was my husband's sister.””
“Was?””
“My husband died two years ago.””
Marcus lowered his voice.
“I'm sorry.””
Elizabeth nodded, but there was no relief in her expression.
“His name was Thomas Carter. He served in the United States Army. He died overseas.
After the funeral, Vanessa became very involved in our lives. She said she wanted to help me raise the children.””
“What happened?””
Elizabeth looked down at Maya.
“About eight months ago, I was involved in a car accident.””
Daniel pulled out his notepad.
“Were the children with you?””
“No. They were with Vanessa.””
Elizabeth took a shaky breath.
“I woke up in a hospital. A doctor told me I had suffered a head injury. When I asked for my children, they told me my sister-in-law had taken temporary custody while I recovered.””
“Did you sign anything?””
“No.””
“Did you authorize her to take the children?””
“Never.””
Marcus's jaw tightened.
Elizabeth continued.
“When I finally got discharged, Vanessa told me the children had been moved to another state. She said the court had approved it.””
“Did you see a court order?””
“She showed me papers. I couldn't understand them. Some were copies, some had signatures. She told me I wasn't allowed to contact Maya or Noah until I was declared mentally stable.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Did you have a lawyer?””
“I tried to get one. Vanessa told everyone I was unstable. She even told my husband's commanding officer that I was suffering from delusions.””
Daniel stopped writing.
“That's a serious accusation.””
Elizabeth gave a bitter little laugh.
“You think I don't know?””
She reached into her handbag and pulled out a folded document.
“I have been carrying this for months.””
Marcus accepted it.
It was a photocopy of a temporary guardianship order.
The paper looked legitimate at first glance.
But something caught his attention.
The date.
It was dated three days after Thomas Carter's death.
And the signature at the bottom belonged to a judge whose name Marcus recognized.
Judge Robert Whitmore.
Marcus had met him years earlier during a military charity event.
But there was something else.
The document listed Elizabeth Carter as deceased.
Marcus looked up.
“Ma'am, why does this say you died?””
Elizabeth's face went white.
“What?””
He turned the paper toward her.
She read the line.
Then she began shaking her head.
“No. No, that's impossible.””
“Have you seen this document before?””
“No. Vanessa told me the court had temporarily suspended my parental rights. She never said I was listed as dead.””
Daniel leaned closer.
“Colonel, look at the bottom.””
There was a second signature.
A witness signature.
Marcus recognized the name immediately.
Dr. Samuel Pierce.
The same doctor who had signed the medical report declaring Elizabeth mentally incapacitated after her accident.
Elizabeth stared at it.
“That's the doctor who treated me.””
Marcus folded the paper carefully.
“Daniel, I want airport security to preserve every camera recording from this terminal. Every entrance, every exit, every gate.””
“Understood.””
“And locate Vanessa.””
Daniel nodded.
Elizabeth suddenly grabbed Marcus's sleeve.
“Please. You don't understand.””
“What don't I understand?””
“She didn't bring them here because she wanted to abandon them.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Then why did she?””
Elizabeth's eyes filled again.
“Because she knows I found the original document.””
“What original document?””
Before she could answer, Daniel's phone vibrated.
He glanced at the screen.
Then he walked several steps away.
Marcus watched his expression change.
“What is it?””
Daniel turned the phone around.
It showed a security photograph of Vanessa walking through the terminal.
But she wasn't alone.
A man in a dark suit was walking beside her.
And the time stamp was from eleven minutes earlier.
Marcus studied the man's face.
He recognized him.
So did Elizabeth.
She made a strangled sound.
“That's not possible.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Who is he?””
Elizabeth's lips barely moved.
“My husband.””
Daniel frowned.
“Ma'am, you just told us your husband died two years ago.””
Elizabeth stared at the photograph.
May you like
Then she whispered:
“That's what they wanted everyone to believe.””
