Chapter 7: The General's Daughter
Rachel put the call on speaker.
“General Harper, this is federal investigator Rachel Morgan. Your name appears in an active financial fraud investigation.””
A deep voice answered.
“Then you should understand that you are dealing with classified information.””
“Classified information doesn't excuse fraud.””
“Be careful, Ms. Morgan.””
Rachel's expression hardened.
“Are you threatening me?””
“I'm giving you advice.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“General Harper, this is Colonel Marcus Hale.””
The line went silent.
Then Harper laughed.
“Marcus. I wondered how long it would take you to become involved.””
“You forged my authorization.””
“I suggest you be careful with accusations.””
“Your company is receiving forty-two million dollars from a trust established for two five-year-old children.””
“That's a private financial arrangement.””
“Then why are you trying to transfer it before the beneficiaries can be verified?””
Another pause.
“Because the funds are part of a larger security agreement.””
Marcus looked at Rachel.
She nodded for him to continue.
“Who authorized it?””
“That's above your clearance.””
Marcus's voice became colder.
“Then perhaps you should explain it to a federal prosecutor.””
Harper chuckled.
“Do you remember your first deployment, Marcus?””
Marcus said nothing.
“You were twenty-six. You thought the military was a place where good men protected innocent people.””
“I still do.””
“Then you haven't learned anything.””
The call disconnected.
Rachel immediately began tracing the number.
Daniel approached.
“Sir, airport police have escorted Whitmore to the security office. But he refuses to surrender his personal phone.””
“Get a warrant.””
“Already requested.””
Elizabeth was sitting with the children.
She looked exhausted.
“Colonel, what happens now?””
Marcus turned toward her.
“We get you somewhere safe.””
“And Thomas?””
Marcus glanced at him.
“He'll need to answer some difficult questions.””
Elizabeth nodded.
She didn't look surprised.
Thomas sat beside the window, staring at his hands.
Noah approached him.
“Daddy?””
Thomas looked up.
“Hey, buddy.””
“Can you draw a dinosaur?””
Thomas managed a small smile.
“I can try.””
Noah handed him a sheet of paper.
Thomas began drawing.
For the first time that morning, the little boy smiled.
Maya watched from her mother's lap.
Then she asked something unexpected.
“Daddy, do you remember my birthday?””
Thomas's pencil stopped.
“Of course.””
“What did I get?””
Thomas swallowed.
“A purple bicycle.””
Maya shook her head.
“That was last year.””
Thomas looked confused.
She continued.
“I got a pink scooter. Mommy bought it.””
Thomas lowered the pencil.
“Oh.””
Maya studied his face.
“You don't know me anymore.””
Elizabeth closed her eyes.
Thomas looked at his daughter.
“I know you love strawberries. I know you hate getting your hair brushed. I know you used to hide cookies under your pillow.””
Maya smiled faintly.
“I don't do that anymore.””
“I know.””
But he didn't.
And that realization hurt more than anything Whitmore had said.
Across the room, Rachel approached Marcus.
“Colonel, I need to speak with you privately.””
They moved into the corridor.
“What is it?””
Rachel opened a file on her tablet.
“I ran a deeper check on Harper Strategic Holdings.””
“And?””
“The company has received money from at least seven military-related trusts over the past four years.””
“How much?””
“More than two hundred million dollars.””
Marcus frowned.
“Where did the money go?””
“Most of it passed through shell companies. But one payment was different.””
She showed him a transaction.
A payment of $1.8 million.
The recipient was a private medical facility in Virginia.
Marcus recognized the name.
“Cedar Ridge?””
Rachel nodded.
“That's where Thomas was held.””
Marcus stared at the screen.
“Who paid for it?””
“Harper Strategic Holdings.””
“What about the staff?””
“Several former military medical personnel. One of them is Dr. Samuel Pierce.””
The same doctor who had signed Elizabeth's false medical report.
Marcus exhaled slowly.
“This is bigger than a financial crime.””
“Yes.””
Rachel swiped to another document.
It contained a list of people who had been placed in protective custody.
Some were former military contractors.
Others were civilian witnesses.
Three names had been marked as deceased.
All three were still alive.
Marcus looked at the dates.
The first case had occurred eight years earlier.
The second five years earlier.
The third was Thomas Carter.
“Harper has been using fake death records to hide witnesses,” Marcus said.
“Not just witnesses,” Rachel replied.
“People who knew where the money went.””
Marcus looked toward the family assistance room.
“And the children?””
Rachel hesitated.
“Thomas's trust was the last one established under the old system. It contains a provision that exposes every administrator who accessed the funds without authorization.””
“That's why they need the original agreement.””
“Exactly.””
Marcus rubbed his jaw.
“Where is the evidence now?””
“With me.””
“Then get it to the prosecutor.””
“I already sent a copy.””
“Good.””
Rachel lowered her voice.
“But there's another problem.””
Marcus looked at her.
“What?””
“The original trust agreement contains a secondary witness statement.””
“Whose?””
Rachel turned the tablet around.
A photograph appeared.
A young woman stood beside Thomas in a military office.
Marcus stared.
He knew her.
It was Lieutenant General Harper's daughter.
*Captain Olivia Harper.*
Marcus frowned.
“Why is she listed as a witness?””
Rachel took a breath.
“Because she was the person who discovered the original financial scheme.””
Marcus looked toward Thomas.
“Did you know?””
Thomas nodded slowly.
“Olivia was the one who helped me copy the records.””
“Where is she now?””
Rachel looked uncomfortable.
“Officially, she died in a training accident four years ago.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Another fake death?””
“Yes.””
Daniel approached.
“Sir, airport security has received an emergency call from the hospital.””
Marcus turned.
“Which hospital?””
“St. Mary's Medical Center.””
“What happened?””
Daniel looked at his phone.
“They've just admitted a woman who identified herself as Captain Olivia Harper.””
Rachel went pale.
“She's alive.””
Marcus took his coat.
“Then we're going to find her.””
But before he could move, Elizabeth appeared in the doorway.
“Colonel.””
He turned.
She was holding Noah's dinosaur.
Its zipper was open.
Something small had fallen out of the lining.
A folded photograph.
Marcus accepted it.
The image showed a little girl standing beside a hospital bed.
On the back was a handwritten note.
If anything happens to me, tell Marcus that Harper's daughter is not the only person he buried.
Marcus read the sentence twice.
Then he looked at Elizabeth.
“Where did you find this?””
“It was inside the dinosaur.””
“Did Thomas put it there?””
Elizabeth shook her head.
“No. I think Vanessa did.””
Thomas approached.
He stared at the photograph.
Then he whispered:
“That's my sister.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Vanessa?””
Thomas nodded.
“She's not the woman who raised me.””
Elizabeth frowned.
“What?””
Thomas's face tightened.
“She was adopted.””
“By whom?””
Thomas looked at the photograph again.
May you like
Then he said something that changed everything.
“By James Harper.””
