Chapter 3: The Photograph Behind the Glass
Marcus didn't raise his voice.
He didn't need to.
“Daniel, secure that room. Nobody enters or leaves without authorization.””
Daniel immediately called airport security.
“I'm moving.””
Marcus turned toward Elizabeth.
“Stay with me.””
She was already shaking.
“They're watching my babies.””
“We're going to protect them.””
“You don't understand. Vanessa always knows where we are.””
“Then we'll make sure she doesn't know where we're going.””
He escorted Elizabeth down the corridor.
Two airport officers were positioned outside the family assistance room.
Inside, Maya sat on a sofa with Noah beside her.
The little boy was drawing on a sheet of paper.
His dinosaur sat on his lap.
When he saw Elizabeth, he jumped up.
“Mommy!””
She rushed toward him.
Marcus remained near the doorway.
A security supervisor approached.
“Colonel, we reviewed the footage. There's a woman who entered this corridor approximately four minutes ago.””
“Description?””
“Black hair. Gray jacket. Carrying a staff identification card.””
“Airport employee?””
“We're checking.””
“Did she enter the room?””
“No. She stood outside for approximately thirty seconds, took a photograph, then walked away.””
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
“Show me.””
The supervisor opened a tablet.
The recording showed a woman approaching the door.
She glanced down the corridor.
Then she raised her phone.
Click.
She walked away.
Marcus paused the footage.
“Zoom in.””
The image sharpened.
The woman's face appeared.
Elizabeth came to stand beside him.
Her breath caught.
“That's Vanessa.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Are you certain?””
“I would recognize her anywhere.””
The security supervisor shook his head.
“She's not wearing a staff badge.””
“Then why did she have an identification card?””
“Possibly a visitor pass.””
Marcus looked again.
The woman was holding something against her chest.
A small black folder.
Elizabeth stared at it.
“That's Thomas's folder.””
“What?””
“He always carried that folder when he traveled. It had his deployment documents and personal papers.””
Marcus studied the footage.
“Can you track where she went?””
The supervisor nodded.
“She entered the restricted staff corridor.””
“Lock it down.””
Within seconds, officers began moving.
Marcus turned to Elizabeth.
“Do you know what was in that folder?””
“No.””
“Anything that could explain why she wants the children?””
Elizabeth hesitated.
Then she remembered something.
“Thomas once told me that the children were protected by a special agreement. He said it wasn't just money. It was something bigger.””
“Bigger how?””
“He said they had a right to something that could never be taken away from them.””
Marcus frowned.
Before he could ask another question, Noah tugged on his sleeve.
“Mr. Soldier?””
Marcus looked down.
“Yes, buddy?””
Noah held out a drawing.
It showed three people.
A woman in a blue dress.
A man wearing a uniform.
And two small children.
Behind them was a large black rectangle.
Marcus smiled faintly.
“Is that your family?””
Noah nodded.
“That's Daddy.””
Marcus studied the drawing.
“Where did you see him?””
Noah pointed at the black rectangle.
“On the screen.””
“What screen?””
“The TV at Vanessa's house.””
Elizabeth crouched beside him.
“Sweetheart, when did you see Daddy?””
Noah looked at his sister.
Maya shook her head.
“Remember what Vanessa said,” she whispered.
Marcus noticed.
He knelt.
“Noah, nobody is going to punish you for telling the truth.””
The little boy squeezed his dinosaur.
“Vanessa said Daddy was dead. But sometimes she talks to him.””
Elizabeth's face drained of color.
“What?””
Noah nodded.
“She goes into the office and closes the door. Then she talks to the computer.””
“Does Daddy talk back?”” Marcus asked.
“Sometimes.””
“Can you remember what he looks like?””
Noah nodded.
“He has a beard now.””
Elizabeth covered her mouth.
Thomas had never worn a beard during their marriage.
Maya suddenly spoke.
“He told Vanessa he wanted to see us.””
Elizabeth turned toward her daughter.
“What did she say?””
Maya lowered her voice.
“She said he couldn't come home until Mommy signed the papers.””
Marcus felt his stomach tighten.
“What papers?””
Maya shrugged.
“The ones that make us go away.””
Elizabeth pulled her daughter into her arms.
“Oh, baby.””
Marcus stood.
“Daniel.””
The lieutenant appeared at the door.
“Sir?””
“Find the private security company connected to Thomas Carter. I want every available record on his deployment and death.””
Daniel nodded.
“There's something else.””
“What?””
“Rachel Morgan called back.””
Marcus took the phone.
“Colonel Hale.””
A woman's voice answered immediately.
“Thank God. I've been trying to reach you.””
“Rachel Morgan?””
“Yes. Is Elizabeth Carter with you?””
“She is.””
“Are the children safe?””
“For now.””
Rachel exhaled.
“Listen carefully. Vanessa has been moving those children between locations because she's afraid they'll recognize someone.””
“Who?””
“Their father.””
Marcus glanced at Elizabeth.
“Thomas Carter is alive?””
“Yes.””
“Where is he?””
“That's the problem. His official death was fabricated, but he isn't the only person involved. Someone inside the military administrative system signed off on it.””
Marcus's expression hardened.
“Do you have evidence?””
“I have enough to establish that Thomas's identity was used to move millions of dollars through a private trust.””
“Why the children?””
“Because the trust has a clause that makes them the rightful beneficiaries. If both children are declared legally deceased or permanently incapacitated, control transfers to a secondary administrator.””
“Who?””
Rachel paused.
“Vanessa Carter.””
Marcus looked toward Elizabeth.
Her face had gone completely still.
Rachel continued.
“There's more. Elizabeth was never legally declared mentally incompetent. The medical documents were forged.””
Marcus closed his eyes for a second.
“How much money?””
“Approximately forty-two million dollars.””
The number hung in the air.
Elizabeth sat down heavily.
Marcus spoke slowly.
“And where is Thomas?””
Rachel lowered her voice.
“Colonel, I think he's been inside this airport for the last twenty minutes.””
Marcus turned toward the corridor.
“Where?””
“Look at the security camera above Gate 14.””
The line went dead.
Daniel immediately opened the airport monitoring system.
The image appeared.
A man in a dark suit stood near the boarding counter.
He was holding a phone.
His beard was neatly trimmed.
His face was older than the photograph.
But there was no mistaking him.
May you like
Thomas Carter was alive.
And he was looking directly into the camera.
