Chapter 5: The Secret Inside the Dinosaur

Marcus returned to the family assistance room with Thomas under the supervision of two airport officers.

Elizabeth was standing beside the window.

Maya was asleep against her shoulder.

Noah was sitting on the carpet, making his dinosaur walk across a row of toy blocks.

The moment Thomas entered, the little boy looked up.

He stopped moving.

His fingers tightened around the plush toy.

“Daddy?””

Thomas froze.

Elizabeth slowly turned.

For a moment, neither adult spoke.

Then Thomas took one step forward.

“Hey, buddy.””

Noah didn't move.

“You're not supposed to be here.””

Thomas swallowed.

“I'm sorry.””

“You're dead.””

The words came out quietly.

Thomas's face crumpled.

“I know.””

Noah looked at his mother.

“Mommy, why is Daddy here?””

Elizabeth had tears in her eyes.

She couldn't answer.

Maya woke up.

She saw Thomas.

Then she screamed.

“That's not Daddy!””

Thomas stopped.

Maya scrambled behind Elizabeth.

“That's the bad man from the computer!””

Marcus felt every muscle in his body tighten.

“What did she say?””

Elizabeth crouched beside her daughter.

“Sweetheart, what do you mean?””

Maya pointed at Thomas.

“Vanessa showed us his picture. She said he was coming to take us away.””

Thomas shook his head.

“No. No, Maya. I would never—”

“You told Vanessa Mommy was dead!””

Thomas stopped speaking.

Elizabeth stood.

“Did you?””

He looked at her.

“I was told you had died.””

“By whom?””

“Whitmore.””

“And you believed him?””

Thomas's jaw tightened.

“I was shown a death certificate.””

Elizabeth laughed bitterly.

“You were shown a paper. I was shown a grave.””

The room went silent.

Thomas lowered his head.

“I didn't know.””

“You didn't know because you didn't look.””

Marcus watched the exchange.

He had seen men return from war and struggle to face the families they had left behind.

But this was different.

This family hadn't been separated by distance.

They had been deliberately torn apart.

Daniel entered.

“Sir, General Whitmore is refusing to cooperate with airport police. He says he has federal authorization.””

Marcus turned.

“Authorization for what?””

“To take custody of the children.””

Elizabeth immediately stepped backward.

“No.””

Thomas's face went white.

“He can't.””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“Who issued the authorization?””

“An attorney representing a private trust.””

“Name?””

“Arthur Mills.””

Thomas closed his eyes.

“That's Vanessa's lawyer.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“Get the document.””

Daniel handed him a copy.

It was an emergency custody transfer order.

The paper listed the children as beneficiaries of the Carter Protection Trust.

It also contained a clause allowing temporary transfer of custody to a designated administrator in the event of a security threat.

The designated administrator was Vanessa Carter.

Marcus read the document twice.

Then he noticed the final paragraph.

The beneficiaries must be transported together with all personal effects currently in their possession.

He looked at the children.

Their backpacks sat beside the sofa.

Maya had a small stuffed rabbit.

Noah had his green dinosaur.

Marcus looked back at the document.

“Why do they need the children's belongings?””

Thomas stared at the page.

Then his eyes moved to Noah's toy.

“Oh, God.””

Elizabeth followed his gaze.

“What?””

Thomas stepped closer.

“Where did he get that dinosaur?””

Elizabeth looked confused.

“He's had it since he was three.””

Thomas's expression changed.

“Did you ever open it?””

“Open what?””

“The toy.””

Noah immediately hugged the dinosaur to his chest.

“No! It's mine!””

Thomas crouched.

“Buddy, I know. I'm not trying to take it.””

Marcus raised a hand.

“Don't touch the child or the toy.””

Thomas looked up.

“There's something inside it.””

Elizabeth frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

“When I was preparing for deployment, I made a copy of the original trust agreement. I hid it somewhere nobody would think to look.””

Marcus stared at him.

“Inside a stuffed dinosaur?””

Thomas nodded.

“I gave it to Noah before I left.””

Elizabeth covered her mouth.

“You gave our three-year-old a document worth forty-two million dollars?””

“It wasn't about the money.””

“Then what was it about?””

Thomas looked at Marcus.

“The original agreement contains the names of every person who authorized the false death report, the fraudulent guardianship, and the transfer of the trust funds.””

Marcus's expression hardened.

“Is that why Vanessa has been trying to get the toy?””

Thomas nodded.

“She doesn't know exactly where the document is hidden. But she knows I put something in one of the children's belongings.””

Noah looked down at his dinosaur.

“Daddy said it was a secret.””

Thomas's eyes filled.

“I did.””

“Vanessa said I had to give it to her.””

Marcus knelt beside the boy.

“Did she ever take the dinosaur?””

Noah shook his head.

“She tried.””

“When?””

“At her house. She pulled it really hard.””

Maya suddenly spoke.

“She cut the dinosaur's tummy.””

Elizabeth turned.

“What?””

Maya nodded.

“She used scissors. But Noah screamed, so she stopped.””

Noah held up the toy.

“There's a little zipper here.””

Marcus examined it.

There was indeed a small zipper beneath the dinosaur's belly, hidden beneath the green fabric.

He looked at Thomas.

“Is the document inside?””

Thomas nodded.

“Probably.””

Marcus didn't open it.

Instead, he called the airport's federal liaison.

Within minutes, a federal investigator named Rachel Morgan entered the room.

She was in her early forties, wearing a dark blazer and carrying a leather briefcase.

She looked at Elizabeth first.

“I'm sorry.””

Elizabeth stared at her.

“Why didn't you tell me the truth?””

Rachel didn't defend herself.

“Because I didn't have enough evidence to protect you.””

“You knew Thomas was alive?””

“I suspected it. I couldn't confirm it.””

“And you let my children disappear?””

Rachel's face tightened.

“I filed an emergency report. It was intercepted before it reached the proper authorities.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Can you authenticate the document if it's inside the toy?””

Rachel nodded.

“If we recover it intact.””

Thomas looked at Noah.

“Buddy, I need you to be brave for a minute.””

Noah backed away.

“No.””

Thomas stopped.

Elizabeth knelt beside her son.

“It's okay. Nobody is taking your dinosaur.””

Noah looked at Marcus.

“You promise?””

Marcus held his gaze.

“I promise nobody will touch it without your permission.””

The little boy slowly extended the toy.

Marcus placed it on the table.

Rachel carefully opened the zipper.

Inside was a small plastic capsule.

She removed it and opened the lid.

A folded sheet of paper slid into her hand.

She unfolded it.

Her expression changed immediately.

“Colonel.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“What?””

Rachel pointed to the first page.

It contained a list of names.

At the top was Thomas Carter.

Below him was Elizabeth Carter.

Then the names of several officials.

One belonged to General Richard Whitmore.

Another belonged to Detective Aaron Bell.

And the final name was someone Marcus knew personally.

Someone who had served beside him for nearly fifteen years.

*LIEUTENANT GENERAL JAMES HARPER.*

Marcus went completely still.

Rachel looked up.

“Colonel, do you know this man?””

Marcus stared at the signature.

“I've known him for twenty-two years.””

“Then there's something you need to understand.””

“What?””

Rachel turned the paper over.

On the back was a handwritten sentence.

If Marcus Hale has found this document, do not trust him. He was the original officer assigned to make sure Thomas Carter never came home.

Marcus felt the room tilt.

Daniel slowly turned toward him.

Elizabeth pulled her children closer.

And from the doorway came a familiar voice.

“That's enough, Marcus.””

Everyone turned.

General Richard Whitmore stood outside the room.

Two security officers flanked him.

His expression was calm.

Almost amused.

He looked at the document in Rachel's hand.

Then he looked directly at Marcus.

“Step away from the children, Colonel.””

Marcus didn't move.

Whitmore smiled faintly.

May you like

“Or shall I tell them what you did to their father?””

*And for the first time in twenty-two years, Colonel Marcus Hale realized that the darkest secret in the room might belong to him.*
