Chapter 2: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Marcus had spent twenty-two years learning to recognize the difference between fear and deception.

Elizabeth Carter wasn't lying.

Her body was telling a story her mouth hadn't caught up with.

Her fingers were trembling. Her breathing was shallow. And when she looked at the photograph again, she didn't look confused.

She looked devastated.

“Ma'am,” Marcus said, “I need you to tell me exactly who that man is.””

Elizabeth wiped her cheeks.

“His name is Thomas Carter.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Your husband?””

She nodded.

“But you said he died overseas.””

“He did.””

“Then how is he standing in that photograph?””

Elizabeth looked toward the children.

“Can someone take Maya and Noah somewhere quiet? They shouldn't have to hear this.””

Marcus motioned to a female airport officer.

“Please escort the children to the family assistance room. Keep their mother informed, and don't separate them from her.””

Maya immediately grabbed Elizabeth's hand.

“No, Mommy. Don't leave us.””

Elizabeth crouched.

“I won't, sweetheart.””

“Promise?””

“I promise.””

Noah held up his dinosaur.

“Can he come?””

Elizabeth smiled through her tears.

“Especially him.””

The children reluctantly followed the officer.

Once they were out of earshot, Elizabeth sat down.

Marcus remained standing.

Daniel opened his notepad.

“Start from the beginning.””

Elizabeth stared at the airport floor.

“Thomas was an intelligence specialist attached to a military logistics unit. He wasn't the kind of soldier who talked about his work at home. Even when he was deployed, he kept most things to himself.””

“Where was he deployed?””

“Afghanistan.””

Marcus nodded.

“And his death?””

“A convoy explosion. That's what I was told.””

“Who notified you?””

“An officer came to our house. He wore a uniform and brought documents. He told me Thomas's remains had been identified through dental records.””

Daniel frowned.

“Were there military funeral arrangements?””

“Yes. There was a memorial service. A closed casket.””

“Did you see his remains?””

Elizabeth shook her head.

“No.””

“Did you question that?””

“I was pregnant with Noah when Thomas deployed. Maya was three. I was barely sleeping. I had two children and a husband who was supposedly never coming home.””

She paused.

“Vanessa handled everything. The funeral, the insurance paperwork, the military contacts. She said she was protecting me.””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“Did you notice anything unusual about the death certificate?””

Daniel shook his head.

Elizabeth continued.

“About six months ago, I received a letter from a lawyer named Peter Lawson. He said Thomas had left something in a private trust. He wanted to meet me.””

“What kind of trust?””

“I didn't know. Vanessa intercepted the letter before I could open it.””

“How?””

“She was staying at my house. She said she was organizing my husband's affairs.””

Elizabeth reached into her handbag again.

This time she pulled out a small envelope.

The paper was worn around the edges.

“I found this hidden inside Maya's old coloring book.””

Marcus opened it.

Inside was a handwritten note.

Elizabeth, if you're reading this, then something has gone terribly wrong. Don't trust Vanessa. Don't trust anyone who claims they are acting on behalf of my estate.

There was no signature.

Only three words at the bottom.

Find the blue file.

Marcus read it twice.

“Where did you find this?””

“In the hospital.””

“Why didn't you give it to the authorities?””

“I tried.””

Elizabeth's voice became sharper.

“The first detective I spoke to said I was grieving and needed rest. The second told me the letter couldn't be authenticated. Then Vanessa produced medical documents claiming I was suffering from paranoia.””

Daniel frowned.

“Do you still have the detective's name?””

Elizabeth nodded.

“Detective Aaron Bell.””

Marcus looked up.

“Bell?””

“Do you know him?””

Marcus didn't answer immediately.

He remembered the name from a report he had reviewed during an unrelated military investigation.

Aaron Bell had been involved in a case concerning stolen identities and fraudulent benefits claims.

The investigation had ended without charges.

“Daniel, check that name.””

Daniel stepped aside and began making a call.

Elizabeth leaned forward.

“Colonel, I need you to understand something. Vanessa didn't just take my children. She took my entire life.””

Marcus sat across from her.

“Tell me about the blue file.””

“I don't know where it is.””

“Did Thomas ever mention it?””

“Not directly. But before he deployed, he told me that if anything happened to him, I should never sign documents I didn't understand.””

“Anything else?””

Elizabeth nodded slowly.

“He said the children would inherit something. Something he called the Carter Protection Trust.””

Marcus looked at the photograph again.

The man beside Vanessa was unmistakably Thomas Carter.

If the photograph was genuine, then someone had constructed an elaborate lie about his death.

And if Elizabeth was telling the truth, that lie had been used to steal her children.

Daniel returned.

“Sir.””

Marcus looked up.

“Bell's retired.””

“That's not unusual.””

“No. But his retirement was approved six months after Thomas Carter's death. He now works for a private security company.””

“Which one?””

Daniel handed him a card.

*Northstar Protective Solutions.*

Marcus recognized the company.

It provided security contractors to several military-related facilities.

“What else?””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“There's an active warrant request involving financial fraud connected to Northstar. It hasn't been approved yet.””

“Who filed it?””

“A federal investigator named Rachel Morgan.””

Elizabeth suddenly stood.

“Rachel?””

Marcus turned.

“You know her?””

“She contacted me three weeks ago.””

“About what?””

“She said she had found evidence that Thomas might still be alive.””

Marcus felt the room become very quiet.

“Did she tell you where he was?””

“No. She said she needed to meet me privately. But before we could arrange it, Vanessa took the children.””

“Why didn't you tell airport police?””

“I did. They said there was no proof of kidnapping because Vanessa had presented herself as their legal guardian.””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“Find Rachel Morgan.””

Daniel was already dialing.

Then Elizabeth's phone rang.

She stared at the screen.

Unknown number.

Marcus raised one hand.

“Don't answer it yet.””

The phone continued vibrating.

Then a message appeared.

Elizabeth opened it.

Her face changed.

Marcus leaned forward.

“What does it say?””

She turned the screen toward him.

You should have stayed away from the airport.

A second message arrived.

If you want your children to survive, stop asking about Thomas.

Elizabeth made a small choking sound.

Marcus took the phone.

“Daniel, get the airport's cybercrime unit involved. I want this number traced.””

Daniel nodded.

Then Elizabeth noticed something else.

There was a photograph attached to the message.

It showed Maya and Noah inside the family assistance room.

The picture had been taken from outside the door.
