Chapter 7: The Sister Who Wanted My Life

Lauren stood in my doorway like she belonged there.

Like this was still the same house where she used to walk in without knocking.

Like she hadn’t spent months secretly trying to convince people my daughter should belong to her.

James immediately stepped in front of me.

“How did you get in?””

Lauren held up a key.

My heart dropped.

“Where did you get that?””

She looked at me.

“You gave it to me.””

I remembered.

Before Emma was born.

When I was preparing for delivery.

I had given spare keys to family members.

Just in case.

Because I trusted them.

Because she was my sister.

“You kept it?””

Lauren shrugged.

“I thought you would need me someday.””

“No,” I said.

My voice surprised even me.

“I needed a sister.””

Her expression changed.

For a moment, pain crossed her face.

Then it disappeared.

“You never understood me.””

James laughed quietly.

“No. We understood you perfectly.””

Lauren ignored him.

She looked past him toward the nursery.

“Can I see her?””

My entire body went rigid.

“No.””

Her face fell.

“Claire.””

“No.””

“You’re keeping my niece away from me?””

I stared at her.

“She is not your daughter.””

The words made her flinch.

Good.

She needed to hear them.

Lauren stepped closer.

“You don’t know what I’ve been through.””

“And you don’t know what it feels like to have someone threaten your child.””

Her jaw tightened.

“I never threatened Emma.””

“You hit her.””

“I barely touched her.””

“You terrified her.””

Lauren looked away.

“That wasn’t supposed to happen.””

I froze.

“What does that mean?””

She didn’t answer.

James moved forward.

“Get out.””

Lauren looked at him.

“You always hated me.””

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“I pitied you.””

That hurt her.

More than anger would have.

“You think you’re better than me?””

“No.””

James shook his head.

“I think you need help.””

Lauren laughed.

“Everyone says that when they don’t want to admit someone else is right.””

She reached into her purse.

My heart immediately raced.

“What is that?””

She pulled out a folder.

A thick one.

“I came here because I wanted to show you something.””

James’ eyes narrowed.

“Put it down.””

“It’s legal paperwork.””

My blood turned cold.

“What paperwork?””

Lauren looked at me.

“The paperwork that proves you’re not as perfect as everyone thinks.””

I stared.

“What are you talking about?””

She opened the folder.

Inside were printed screenshots.

Messages.

Documents.

Medical notes.

My name appeared on several pages.

My hands started shaking.

“What did you do?””

Lauren smiled sadly.

“I didn’t do anything.””

That was the problem.

She sounded like she believed it.

“You were depressed after giving birth.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“You cried all the time.””

“I was exhausted.””

“You told me you felt like you weren’t yourself.””

Every word was true.

But every word had been twisted.

“You were struggling,” Lauren continued.

“Like millions of mothers.””

“But not every mother has someone who can prove they weren’t okay.””

James took the folder.

“You stole private information.””

Lauren’s expression hardened.

“I protected a child.””

“No,” I said.

I stepped forward.

“You built a case against me.””

She looked at me.

“You don’t know what I was trying to do.””

“Yes, I do.””

I looked directly into her eyes.

“You wanted my baby.””

For the first time, Lauren didn’t deny it.

She just whispered:

“I wanted the life that should have been mine.””

The words hung in the air.

Then James’ phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed after only a few seconds.

“What?””

I watched him listen.

Then he looked at me.

“Claire…”

“What?””

He swallowed.

“The police are here.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

James looked at Lauren.

“Because someone reported us for child endangerment.””

Nobody moved.

Lauren slowly smiled.

And I realized the truth.

May you like

She hadn’t come to apologize.

She had come to start a war.
