Chapter 6: The Document That Changed Everything

I stared at James like I was seeing him for the first time.

The man standing in front of me was the same man who had held my hand through labor, who had cried when Emma took her first breath, who had promised me that he would protect our family no matter what.

But now there was a question sitting between us.

A question I didn’t want to ask.

“Did you sign something?”” I whispered.

James’ face tightened.

“Claire—”

“Did you?””

The silence answered before he did.

My chest tightened.

“Tell me the truth.””

James sat down slowly.

“No.””

The relief lasted less than a second.

“Then why did the nurse say the baby’s father agreed?””

James looked at the floor.

“Because Lauren lied.””

I swallowed.

“She forged something?””

“No.””

“Then explain.””

He rubbed his hands together.

“I need you to understand what happened that night.””

“I’ve been asking you to explain since we left your parents’ house.””

His eyes closed.

“I know.””

The anger inside me was fighting with the part of me that still loved him.

“James.””

His voice became quiet.

“Three days before Emma was born, Lauren came to me.””

I froze.

“Why?””

“She said she was worried about you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“She was worried about me?””

“She told me you were overwhelmed. That you had been crying. That you were scared you couldn’t handle motherhood.””

My expression changed.

Because there was a small piece of truth hidden inside that lie.

I had been scared.

Every new mother was.

But Lauren had taken my fear and turned it into a weapon.

“She said you needed support,” James continued.

“She told me she had prepared emergency paperwork just in case something happened during delivery.””

“What kind of paperwork?””

“Temporary guardianship forms.””

My stomach twisted.

“And you?””

“I refused.””

“Then how did she get them?””

James looked at me.

“I made a mistake.””

The words hit harder than anything else.

“What mistake?””

“I told her I would never let anything happen to you or Emma.””

I frowned.

“That’s not a mistake.””

“It was when I said it while she was recording.””

The room went silent.

“She recorded you?””

“Yes.””

James stood and walked toward the window.

“She edited the conversation. She made it sound like I agreed that if something happened to you, she would be the person responsible for Emma.””

I stared at him.

“Could that even work legally?””

“No.””

“Then why did the nurse mention it?””

“Because Lauren brought it to the hospital anyway.””

I felt sick.

“She planned everything.””

James nodded.

“She was convinced something would happen.””

“What does that mean?””

He looked at me.

“She kept saying you weren’t ready.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“She wanted people to think I was a bad mother.””

“Yes.””

My phone was still in my hand.

The call with Dr. Carter was still open.

“Are you still there?”” the nurse asked.

I lifted the phone.

“Yes.””

James looked at me.

“Claire…”

I ignored him.

“Dr. Carter, what happened after Lauren showed the document?””

The nurse sighed.

“The staff noticed inconsistencies. We did not accept it.””

“Then why didn’t anyone tell me?””

“Because your husband asked us not to alarm you until we could confirm everything.””

I looked at James.

“Why?””

He answered quietly.

“Because Lauren had already convinced herself she was saving Emma.””

I felt tears burning my eyes.

“And you thought keeping secrets would save me?””

“No.””

James stepped closer.

“I thought I could handle it.””

“That’s not your decision.””

“I know.””

His voice cracked.

“I know now.””

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Dr. Carter said something that made my blood run cold.

“Claire, there is one more thing.””

I looked at the phone.

“What?””

“When security removed Lauren that day, she wasn’t crying.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She wasn’t angry either.””

The nurse paused.

“She was smiling.””

A chill ran through me.

“Why?””

The nurse lowered her voice.

“Because she told us she knew another way to get Emma.””

The call ended.

I slowly lowered my phone.

James looked terrified.

“What did she say?””

I looked toward the nursery.

Toward my sleeping daughter.

“She said she knew another way.””

Then my front door unlocked.

Someone was standing outside.

May you like

And when the door opened…

Lauren walked in.
