Chapter 3: The Pattern Nobody Wanted To See

The sentence followed me downstairs like a shadow.

Emma wasn’t the first child.

I couldn’t stop hearing it.

The Christmas lights outside the windows flickered against the dark glass. The house that had always represented safety suddenly felt unfamiliar.

“Dad,” I said, “explain.””

Nobody spoke.

Lauren sat on the couch, wiping her face.

For the first time in my life, my older sister looked small.

But I couldn’t let that distract me.

Not anymore.

Dad sat across from us.

“Five years ago, before you and James got married, Lauren worked at a daycare.””

I nodded slowly.

“I know.””

“She became attached to one little girl there.””

My chest tightened.

“How attached?””

Dad looked down.

“Too attached.””

Lauren whispered, “Stop.””

Dad continued.

“The child’s parents complained that Lauren kept telling people she was like a second mother.””

I remembered hearing something about it.

But Lauren had explained it away.

She said jealous coworkers were trying to ruin her.

I believed her.

Because she was my sister.

Dad looked at me.

“I thought it was just grief. I thought she needed help.””

James’ voice was quiet.

“And nobody got her help?””

Dad closed his eyes.

“We tried.””

Lauren suddenly stood.

“You don’t understand anything!””

Her voice echoed through the room.

Everyone turned.

She pointed at me.

“You have no idea what it feels like to watch someone else get everything you wanted.””

I held Emma tighter.

“You don’t get to punish my daughter because life hurt you.””

Lauren’s eyes filled with anger.

“You think you’re better than me?””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“I think you’re dangerous.””

The word landed heavily.

Mom gasped.

“Claire.””

But James nodded.

“She’s right.””

Lauren looked at him.

“You’re taking her side?””

“I’m protecting my family.””

That word seemed to break something inside Lauren.

Family.

She laughed bitterly.

“Funny. Everyone always says family matters until someone like me needs something.””

Dad stood.

“Lauren, you need help.””

She stared at him.

“No.””

Her voice became cold.

“I need my sister to stop acting like she’s innocent.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Lauren looked at me.

“You really don’t remember?””

A strange feeling moved through me.

“Remember what?””

She smiled sadly.

And that frightened me more than her anger.

“The night Emma was born.””

My hands went cold.

“What about it?””

Lauren stepped closer.

“I was there.””

“I know.””

“No,” she whispered.

“You don’t.””

James moved between us.

“Stay back.””

Lauren stopped.

Then she said:

“Ask your husband what happened before you woke up.””

I looked at James.

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

And Lauren saw it too.

A smile slowly appeared on her face.

“You never told her.””

My heart started pounding.

“James?””

He looked at me.

“Claire…”

The room became silent.

“Tell me what?””

He opened his mouth.

But before he could answer, his phone rang.

The sound cut through the room.

James looked at the screen.

His face immediately changed.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

He just stared.

Then he handed me the phone.

There was a message from an unknown number.

May you like

One sentence.

You don’t know the whole story about your daughter.
