Chapter 2: The Photograph Hidden Upstairs

My father had always been the strongest person I knew.

He was the man who fixed broken doors, carried heavy furniture alone, and never admitted when he was tired.

But standing in that hallway, he looked like a man carrying something too heavy to hold.

“Dad?”” I whispered.

He rubbed his forehead.

“Not here.””

Lauren immediately stepped forward.

“Dad, don’t do this.””

That sentence told me everything.

She wasn’t confused.

She wasn’t offended.

She was scared.

James noticed it too.

“What are you hiding?”” he asked.

Lauren’s face tightened.

“Nothing.””

Dad ignored her.

“Claire, come upstairs with me.””

I looked down at Emma.

She was calmer now, but her tiny fingers were still gripping my shirt.

James placed a hand on my shoulder.

“I’m coming with you.””

Dad nodded.

“Good.””

That frightened me more than anything.

Because my father never asked for witnesses.

We followed him upstairs to the old guest room where he kept boxes of family memories. The room smelled like dust and old paper. Christmas decorations sat stacked in the corner, untouched since last year.

Dad opened a wooden cabinet.

His hands trembled.

From inside, he pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this three months ago.””

He handed it to me.

My name was written across the front.

Claire.

My stomach tightened.

“Why does this have my name?””

Dad looked away.

“Because your sister didn’t want you to see it.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

A hospital photograph.

My breath stopped.

It showed Lauren.

Holding Emma.

But it wasn’t from Christmas.

It was from the day Emma was born.

I looked at the date.

Six months earlier.

“Why was Lauren at the hospital?”” I asked.

Dad swallowed.

“She came before anyone else.””

I stared at him.

“That doesn’t make sense. She visited after I gave birth.””

Dad shook his head.

“No.””

The room seemed to tilt.

“She came before you woke up.””

James stepped closer.

“What happened?””

Dad looked at the photo.

“Your sister was there when the nurse brought Emma into the room.””

My grip tightened.

“So?””

Dad hesitated.

“She asked questions.””

“What questions?””

Dad’s eyes filled with sadness.

“She asked if Emma looked like Claire.””

My heart pounded.

“What?””

James’ expression changed.

“Why would she ask that?””

Dad didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

“Because Lauren believed Emma should have been her daughter.””

I stared at him.

“That’s impossible.””

Dad opened another envelope.

Inside was a letter.

A letter written by Lauren.

My hands shook as I read the first line.

I know everyone thinks Claire deserves this happiness, but they don’t understand what was taken from me.

I looked up.

“What is this?””

Dad sighed.

“Your sister had a miscarriage two years ago.””

I knew that.

Everyone knew.

“She never recovered,” Dad continued.

“But we didn’t realize how bad it became.””

James read over my shoulder.

The letter continued.

Claire got the life I was supposed to have. The husband. The baby. The perfect family.

My stomach turned.

Dad whispered, “Lauren became obsessed with the idea that something had been stolen from her.””

I looked toward the door.

Suddenly, every memory of Lauren holding Emma felt different.

Every smile.

Every visit.

Every time she asked to babysit.

“How long have you known?””

Dad looked ashamed.

“Not everything.””

The silence was unbearable.

Then we heard footsteps.

Lauren stood outside the room.

Her face was wet with tears.

“You weren’t supposed to find that.””

James moved in front of me.

“You tried to take our daughter.””

Lauren shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“I just wanted to understand why Claire got everything.””

I stared at her.

“Everything?””

Lauren looked directly at me.

“You always had people choosing you.””

The words hurt because they were honest.

But not in the way she thought.

“Lauren,” I said softly, “you hurt my baby because you were jealous.””

Her expression hardened.

“She wasn’t supposed to be yours.””

James immediately reached for his phone.

“What did you say?””

Lauren froze.

Realizing what she had revealed.

And then my father spoke.

“Claire…”

His voice was barely audible.

“There’s one more thing you need to know.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

May you like

Dad stared at Lauren.

“Emma wasn’t the first child your sister tried to claim.””
