Chapter 4: The Lie My Husband Carried

I read the message three times.

The words didn’t change.

You don’t know the whole story about your daughter.

My first instinct was fear.

My second was betrayal.

I looked at James.

“Who sent this?””

“I don’t know.””

“Do you know what they’re talking about?””

He stayed silent.

That silence hurt more than any answer.

“James.””

He sat down slowly.

“I need to explain.””

Lauren crossed her arms.

“I told you.””

“Lauren, leave,” James said.

She laughed.

“Why? Because the truth makes you uncomfortable?””

I looked between them.

“What truth?””

James rubbed his hands over his face.

“I didn’t tell you everything about the day Emma was born.””

My stomach dropped.

“Why?””

He looked at Emma.

Then at me.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

I almost laughed.

“Protect me?””

I lowered my voice.

“From my own daughter’s story?””

He looked away.

The room felt smaller.

“When Emma was born, there was an incident.””

“What kind of incident?””

James took a breath.

“Lauren tried to take Emma from the hospital room.””

I froze.

“I know that part.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“You know she visited.””

He looked at me.

“You don’t know that security had to remove her.””

I stared.

“What?””

Mom covered her mouth.

Dad looked down.

Like he already knew.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

James’ eyes filled with guilt.

“Because you had just given birth. You were exhausted. You were recovering. The doctors said stress could affect you.””

I shook my head.

“So everyone decided to lie to me?””

Nobody answered.

The silence was the answer.

I stood up.

“No.””

My voice trembled.

“No, you all don’t get to do that.””

Emma started stirring in my arms.

I immediately softened.

“I am her mother.””

I looked at every person in the room.

“I deserved to know.””

James stood.

“You’re right.””

That surprised me.

“I was wrong.””

He stepped closer.

“But there’s something else.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“The hospital staff found something in Lauren’s bag.””

My heart raced.

“What?””

James looked toward my father.

Dad nodded.

“Show her.””

James pulled out his wallet.

Inside was a folded piece of paper.

A hospital security report.

My hands shook as I read it.

Subject: Lauren Walker.

Reason for removal: Attempted unauthorized transfer of infant.

My vision blurred.

Then I saw another line.

Subject repeatedly stated infant belonged with her family.

I looked up.

“She said Emma belonged with her.””

James nodded.

“I should have told you.””

I looked at my sister.

“You came here on Christmas.””

Lauren’s eyes filled with tears.

“I wanted to apologize.””

I almost believed her.

Almost.

Then she said:

“But you pushed me away.””

My anger returned.

“You hit my baby.””

“I lost control.””

“That is not an excuse.””

Lauren looked at Emma.

And something about her expression terrified me.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Possession.

“I just wanted her to have a better mother.””

James immediately stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Lauren looked at him.

Then smiled.

“You still don’t know what happened before Emma was born.””

My heart stopped.

“What are you talking about?””

Lauren looked directly at James.

“Tell her.””

James went pale.

I turned toward him.

“What is she talking about?””

He didn’t answer.

May you like

And that was when I knew.

Whatever came next would change everything.
