Chapter 5: The Secret Written Before Birth

I left my parents’ house that night with more questions than answers.

The drive home was silent.

Emma slept in the back seat, unaware that the adults around her had shattered the world she was born into.

James kept his hands on the steering wheel.

“You’re angry.””

I looked out the window.

“I don’t know what I am.””

“That’s fair.””

“No, James.””

I turned toward him.

“I trusted you.””

He swallowed.

“I know.””

“You knew Lauren was obsessed with Emma.””

“Yes.””

“You knew she tried to take her.””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me.””

His silence hurt.

When we arrived home, I carried Emma upstairs while James followed.

The nursery was decorated exactly how we had planned before she was born.

The soft yellow walls.

The stuffed animals.

The little wooden sign above the crib.

Emma’s room.

Her room.

Not Lauren’s.

Never Lauren’s.

I placed my daughter down gently.

Then I turned around.

“Tell me everything.””

James sat in the chair beside the crib.

For a long moment, he said nothing.

Then he pulled out his phone.

“I found this after I came back from deployment.””

He showed me an email.

The sender was a hospital employee.

The message was short.

Captain Walker, I believe you deserve to know what was discovered in your wife’s sister’s records.

I looked at him.

“Her records?””

He nodded.

“The hospital reviewed Lauren’s behavior after the incident.””

I read the attached file.

And my blood went cold.

Lauren had searched adoption websites.

She had saved articles about guardianship.

She had written notes.

Hundreds of them.

But one sentence stopped me.

If Claire cannot give the child the life she deserves, I will.

I covered my mouth.

James whispered, “I should have shown you sooner.””

I stared at the screen.

“She planned this.””

“Yes.””

A tear slipped down my cheek.

Not because I felt sorry for Lauren.

Because I realized how close we had come to something worse.

Then my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

Again.

I hesitated before answering.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice spoke.

“Claire?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Dr. Emily Carter. I was one of the nurses present when Emma was born.””

I stood still.

“Why are you calling me?””

There was a pause.

Then she said:

“Because there is something your husband never told you about that night.””

I looked at James.

His face changed.

He knew.

“Dr. Carter…”

Her voice became softer.

“Claire, before Emma was born, Lauren came to the hospital with a document.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“What document?””

The nurse took a breath.

“A custody agreement.””

The room disappeared.

“What?””

“She claimed there was a reason she needed legal authority over your baby.””

My eyes moved slowly toward James.

The man I loved.

The man who promised to protect me.

“Why would she have that?””

The nurse hesitated.

Then answered.

“Because she said the baby’s father had already agreed.””

My heart stopped.

I looked at James.

And for the first time since Christmas began…

May you like

I wondered if my husband was hiding more than just the truth.

I wondered if he had been part of it.
