Chapter 9: The Debt That Changed Everything

I thought I understood betrayal.

I had watched Mia destroy my dress.

I had watched Vanessa dismiss my pain.

I had discovered that money my mother left for me had disappeared.

But nothing prepared me for hearing my father admit that he had borrowed money in my mother's name.

"Why?"" I whispered.

Dad sat down.

His face looked older than it had that morning.

"I was trying to save the family business.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"David, what are you talking about?""

Dad rubbed his hands together.

"After your mother died, the business was struggling. I had taken out loans, and the payments were becoming impossible.""

"Then why didn't you tell anyone?"" I asked.

"Because I thought I could fix it.""

He looked at the letter.

"Your mother knew I was in trouble. She wanted to help me. She asked Richard to arrange a loan using the estate as collateral.""

Daniel shook his head.

"That was never approved.""

"I know.""

"Then what did you sign?""

Dad looked at me.

"A personal guarantee.""

I frowned.

"What does that mean?""

"It means I agreed to repay the money myself. But Richard changed the documents later. He made it appear that your mother had borrowed the money.""

I looked at the papers.

"So Vanessa wasn't lying about everything.""

"No," Dad said quietly.

"But she wasn't telling the whole truth either.""

The investigator took notes.

"Mr. Bennett, do you have a copy of the original agreement?""

Dad shook his head.

"Richard kept it.""

"Why?""

"He said he needed it for the final accounting.""

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"Richard has been using that excuse for years.""

I looked at Dad.

"Did Mom know?""

He nodded.

"She discovered the altered documents shortly before she died. She wanted me to report him.""

"Did you?""

Dad looked down.

"No.""

"Why?""

"Because Richard told me that if I exposed him, the company would collapse. I was afraid we'd lose the house. I was afraid you'd lose your future.""

I stared at him.

"And instead, you let me believe there was no money for me?""

He closed his eyes.

"Yes.""

My voice trembled.

"I worked weekends. I skipped meals. I walked home in the rain.""

"I know.""

"You watched me do all that.""

"I know.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Dad's eyes filled.

"Because I was ashamed.""

I stepped away.

For years, I had thought my father was the one person who would always protect me.

Now I was learning that love didn't prevent people from making terrible decisions.

Sometimes, it made them hide those decisions.

Daniel placed a hand on my shoulder.

"Your mother knew David had made mistakes. She also knew he loved you.""

I looked at him.

"That doesn't make it okay.""

"No. It doesn't.""

The investigator collected the documents and left to contact Margaret.

Dad and I remained in the living room.

Vanessa had already been asked to provide a formal statement.

Mia sat quietly on the sofa.

Nobody seemed to know what to say.

Finally, Dad spoke.

"I don't expect you to forgive me.""

I looked at him.

"Then what do you expect?""

"Nothing. I just want you to know that I never intended for you to suffer.""

I shook my head.

"Intentions don't give me back the things I missed.""

He nodded.

"I know.""

I walked upstairs.

My phone rang.

Chloe.

I answered.

"Hey.""

"How are you?""

I sat on my bed.

"I don't know.""

She was quiet for a moment.

"Do you want to talk?""

I told her everything.

About the trust.

The property.

The altered prescription.

My father's loan.

When I finished, Chloe exhaled.

"Aaliyah, that's a lot.""

"I feel like everyone lied to me.""

"Maybe some of them did. But you're still here. And you're finally finding out the truth.""

I stared at the ruined dress.

"I missed graduation.""

Chloe was quiet.

Then she said, "You know what? That's not the end of your story.""

I smiled weakly.

"You're always saying things like that.""

"Because you need to hear them.""

After we hung up, I opened my laptop.

The university had posted photographs from the ceremony.

I found one of the graduates walking across the stage.

My name was visible on the list beside the photograph.

I had earned my place.

Even if I hadn't been there to receive the applause.

The next morning, Margaret called.

"There's been a development.""

Dad put the call on speaker.

"What's happened?""

"Richard Cole has agreed to meet with investigators.""

Daniel frowned.

"Why?""

"He wants to negotiate.""

Dad shook his head.

"He's trying to protect himself.""

"Possibly. But he has agreed to provide the original loan agreement and the original property records.""

I looked at Dad.

"Will that prove everything?""

"It should clarify several issues," Margaret replied.

She continued.

"There's also something important about your mother's medical records. The prescription alteration was not authorized by her treating physician. The pharmacy has preserved the original records, and investigators are reviewing the circumstances.""

I swallowed.

"Could Vanessa have known?""

"At this point, we have no evidence that she requested the medication change. We do have evidence that Richard handled the paperwork.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"What about the money?""

Margaret explained that the trust still contained part of the original investment, and the property partnership remained active.

She also said a formal accounting would determine how much had been improperly withdrawn.

For the first time, there was a path forward.

That afternoon, Mia knocked on my bedroom door.

I looked up.

She was holding a small envelope.

"Can I come in?""

I nodded.

She sat on the chair beside my desk.

"I found something in Mom's closet.""

She handed me the envelope.

Inside was a receipt from a tailor.

The date was from three days before graduation.

The description read:

Alteration and repair estimate — deep blue evening gown.

I frowned.

"What's this?""

Mia looked down.

"Mom took your dress to a tailor.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

"She told me she was going to have it repaired.""

I opened the envelope further.

There was a second receipt.

A payment had been made.

But the tailor's note at the bottom said:

Customer requested no repairs be completed. Garment to be returned as received.

I looked at Mia.

"Why would she do that?""

Mia's eyes filled.

"Because she wanted you to think I had destroyed something that couldn't be fixed.""

My chest tightened.

"She knew I could have repaired it?""

Mia nodded.

"She wanted Dad to get angry. She wanted him to destroy my bag. She said if he did that, I'd finally understand that I wasn't the favorite anymore.""

I stared at the receipt.

The entire situation had been manipulated.

Mia had still cut the dress.

But Vanessa had planned what would happen afterward.

"Why are you telling me this?""

Mia wiped her cheeks.

"Because I don't want to be like her.""

I looked at her.

"Then stop acting like her.""

She nodded.

"I know.""

She reached into her pocket and placed something on the desk.

A small silver pin.

It was shaped like a flower.

"I found this in the garment bag.""

I recognized it.

It belonged to my mother.

I picked it up.

Mia stood.

"I'm sorry, Aaliyah.""

I looked at her.

"I hear you.""

She nodded.

Then she walked out.

That evening, Dad received a call from Margaret.

Richard had provided the original loan agreement.

But there was a problem.

The document showed that the loan had been taken out in Dad's name, not my mother's.

More importantly, the agreement contained a handwritten clause.

If the loan wasn't repaid within five years, ownership of the Massachusetts property would transfer to the lender.

Dad stared at the document.

"That's impossible. I paid it.""

Margaret turned to the final page.

"According to these records, you did.""

"Then why is the property still under dispute?""

She pointed to a second signature.

"Because Richard transferred the debt to another company after you repaid it.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Who owns that company?""

Margaret looked at us.

"The company is registered to a woman named Vanessa Bennett.""

Dad went completely still.

But Margaret wasn't finished.

"There's one more thing.""

She placed a bank transfer record on the table.

"After your final payment, the lender received the money.""

Dad looked at the account number.

Then his face crumpled.

He recognized it.

It was the account Vanessa had used for the family expenses.

The money Dad had repaid hadn't gone to Richard.

It had gone into Vanessa's personal account.

I looked at my father.

He slowly lowered himself into a chair.

May you like

"She didn't just take Aaliyah's inheritance," he whispered.

"She took my money too.""
