Chapter 4: The Signature That Shouldn't Have Existed

My mother had never told me much about her brother.

His name was Daniel Carter.

I knew he had died in a car accident when I was little. There was one photograph of him in an old family album, standing beside my mother at what looked like a graduation party.

He had dark hair, a crooked smile, and a small scar near his eyebrow.

I remembered my mother calling him Danny.

But according to the documents in front of me, Daniel had signed the final property transfer three years after his reported death.

"That isn't possible," Dad said.

Margaret closed the folder.

"That's why we're investigating.""

"Are you suggesting someone forged his signature?""

"I'm saying the documents raise serious questions.""

I stared at the page.

The signature looked real.

The same sharp curve at the end. The same unusually long D.

"Could he have been alive?""

Margaret shook her head.

"His death certificate is on file. But we need to examine the original transfer records.""

Dad leaned back.

"Who prepared the documents?""

Margaret read the name.

"Westbridge Legal Services.""

Dad's face changed.

"That's the firm Vanessa used.""

I turned toward him.

"What?""

"She had a lawyer she worked with when we sold the house. She told me everything had been handled properly.""

Margaret wrote something down.

"Do you remember the attorney's name?""

Dad stared at the paper.

"Richard Cole.""

Margaret nodded slowly.

"That name appears in several of the trust transactions.""

I felt as though I were watching my life unfold through someone else's paperwork.

My mother had left me something.

Someone had moved the money.

A property had supposedly been sold.

A dead man had signed the documents.

And Vanessa had been involved in the legal process.

I looked at Dad.

"Did you know any of this?""

He shook his head.

"No.""

Margaret closed the file.

"I recommend that neither of you contact Vanessa about the documents until we establish the full record. If she has relevant information, we need it preserved.""

We left the office just before noon.

Outside, the sky was gray.

Dad unlocked the car, but I didn't get in immediately.

"I want to meet Evelyn.""

He nodded.

"I'll arrange it.""

"Today.""

He looked at me.

"All right.""

Before he could make the call, his phone rang.

Vanessa.

Dad answered on speaker.

"Hello?""

"Where are you?""

"With Aaliyah.""

"I've been trying to reach you.""

"We were at the attorney's office.""

There was a long silence.

Then Vanessa said something I never expected.

"Did Margaret show you the original document?""

Dad looked at me.

"Which document?""

"The property transfer.""

"How do you know about that?""

Vanessa exhaled.

"David, listen to me. You're misunderstanding what happened.""

"Then explain it.""

"Not over the phone.""

"Why not?""

"Because Aaliyah doesn't need to hear all this.""

I stepped closer.

"I'm standing right here.""

Vanessa went quiet.

Then she said, "You should come home. We need to discuss the future of this family.""

Dad ended the call.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then he looked at me.

"She's worried.""

"About me?""

He didn't answer.

That afternoon, Evelyn agreed to meet us at a small café near the river.

I recognized her immediately.

The same dark hair.

The same silver necklace.

The same face from the photograph.

She stood when we entered.

For a moment, she simply looked at me.

Then her eyes filled with tears.

"Oh, sweetheart.""

I didn't know whether to hug her.

She seemed to understand.

"Your mother had your smile," she whispered.

I sat across from her.

"Did you know she left me a letter?""

Evelyn nodded.

"I helped her write several of them.""

"Why didn't you come see me?""

Her expression crumpled.

"Because your stepmother made sure I couldn't.""

Dad shifted in his chair.

"What does that mean?""

Evelyn looked at him.

"Vanessa told me you didn't want me near Aaliyah. She said you believed I was trying to take control of the estate.""

"That's what she told me about you.""

Evelyn gave a sad laugh.

"Of course she did.""

She opened her handbag and removed a small envelope.

"Your mother asked me to keep this until you were old enough to understand.""

I took it.

Inside was a photograph of the Massachusetts cottage.

On the back, my mother had written:

This is where I want you to go when the world becomes too loud.

I touched the words.

Evelyn watched me.

"Your mother loved that house. It was where she spent every summer with Daniel.""

"What happened to it?""

Evelyn looked toward Dad.

"Your mother discovered that someone had been using her identity to access the trust.""

Dad stiffened.

"What?""

"She noticed withdrawals that didn't match the records. At first, she thought it was a mistake. Then she found a second account.""

"Who controlled it?"" I asked.

Evelyn lowered her voice.

"Vanessa.""

Dad shook his head.

"That can't be right.""

"I have copies of the original statements.""

She placed a small envelope on the table.

"There was also a company established shortly before your mother's death. Its purpose was to protect the family property and ensure Aaliyah would inherit it.""

"Who owned the company?"" I asked.

"Your mother and Daniel.""

I looked at her.

"But Daniel was dead.""

Evelyn's eyes narrowed.

"That is what everyone was told.""

Dad leaned forward.

"Are you saying Daniel was alive?""

She nodded.

My mouth went dry.

"Where is he?""

Evelyn reached into her handbag again.

This time, she pulled out a business card.

"He's been living in Oregon under his middle name. Your mother asked him to stay away until the legal situation was resolved.""

"Why?""

"Because she believed someone was trying to take the property.""

I stared at the card.

A phone number was written on the back.

I looked up.

"Does he know about me?""

Evelyn smiled sadly.

"He knows everything about you. Your grades. Your graduation. The fact that you worked at a grocery store to buy your own dress.""

I felt tears gather in my eyes.

"How?""

"Because he has been trying to contact you for years.""

Dad frowned.

"Why didn't he contact me?""

Evelyn looked at him.

"Because the last time he did, Vanessa answered your phone.""

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Dad slowly stood.

"That's enough.""

Evelyn didn't move.

"David, your wife knew about the second account. She knew about the property. And she knew Daniel was alive.""

I looked at the business card.

My mother's brother.

A man I had believed dead for most of my life.

A man who might know what had happened to everything she left me.

My phone suddenly vibrated.

An unknown number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A man's voice came through.

It was deep, slightly rough, and unmistakably emotional.

"Aaliyah?""

"Yes?""

"My name is Daniel Carter.""

I stopped breathing.

He continued.

"I've been waiting eighteen years to say this.""

A pause.

May you like

Then he asked the question that changed everything.

"Did Vanessa finally show you the blue box?""
