Chapter 5: The Box My Mother Hid Before She Died

I didn't know how to respond.

"Blue box?"" I repeated.

Daniel exhaled.

"Your mother kept it in the house near the coast. She told me that one day, when you were old enough, you would need to see what was inside.""

I looked at Evelyn.

She had gone pale.

"Where is it?"" I asked.

"That's the problem. I don't know if it's still there.""

Dad took the phone from my hand.

"Daniel, this is David. I need you to explain exactly what you're talking about.""

There was a pause.

Then Daniel said, "You have a lot of explaining to do yourself.""

Dad's jaw tightened.

"That's fair.""

"Is Aaliyah safe?""

"Yes.""

"Is Vanessa there?""

"No.""

Daniel was silent for several seconds.

Then he said, "I can be there tomorrow.""

Dad agreed.

When the call ended, I looked at Evelyn.

"What's in the box?""

She folded her hands.

"Evidence.""

"Evidence of what?""

"Your mother believed someone was preparing to steal your inheritance before she died. She collected records, letters, and copies of financial documents.""

"Why didn't she give them to the police?""

"She was afraid she didn't have enough proof. She wanted to understand who was involved before making accusations.""

I swallowed.

"Was Vanessa involved?""

Evelyn looked down.

"I believe she was.""

Dad stood beside the window, staring at the street.

"Then we need to find that box.""

We returned home shortly before six.

Vanessa was waiting in the living room.

Mia sat beside her, scrolling through her phone.

The moment we entered, Vanessa stood.

"Where have you been?""

Dad removed his coat.

"Out.""

"With Evelyn?""

He didn't answer.

Vanessa looked at me.

"So you've met her.""

I put my bag down.

"Yes.""

She laughed without humor.

"Wonderful. Now you've heard her version of everything.""

"She showed me my mother's letter.""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"Your mother was very sick when she wrote those things.""

"She was perfectly capable of knowing what she wanted.""

"You were seven, Aaliyah. You don't understand what happened.""

"Then explain it.""

Vanessa looked toward Dad.

He stepped forward.

"She deserves the truth.""

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

"Not everything is as simple as you think.""

Mia finally put down her phone.

"Can we stop talking about this? I'm tired of everyone acting like I'm some terrible person.""

I looked at her.

"You destroyed my dress.""

"And Dad destroyed my bag!""

"You can buy another bag.""

She stood.

"Exactly! And you can buy another dress!""

I stared at her.

"With what money?""

Mia opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

Vanessa moved between us.

"This conversation is over.""

Dad took a folded document from his pocket.

"No. It isn't.""

He placed it on the coffee table.

"Margaret has formally requested a complete review of the trust. Until that review is finished, no additional money can be withdrawn.""

Vanessa looked at the document.

"You can't freeze my accounts.""

"Your accounts aren't being frozen. The trust is.""

"You are making a terrible mistake.""

"If everything was handled correctly, there is nothing to worry about.""

Vanessa picked up the document.

Her fingers trembled slightly.

"Who else knows about this?""

"The attorney. Evelyn. And now Daniel.""

The paper slipped from her hand.

Mia looked at her mother.

"Who's Daniel?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

Dad watched her carefully.

"Your wife's brother-in-law," he said.

"A man you were told died years ago.""

Mia stared at her mother.

"What?""

Vanessa grabbed her handbag.

"I need to make a phone call.""

She walked toward the kitchen.

Dad followed her with his eyes.

Mia turned toward me.

"What did you tell them?""

"Nothing.""

"You're lying.""

I picked up my bag.

"I'm going upstairs.""

She stepped in front of me.

"You think you're better than me now?""

"No.""

"Then why are you doing this?""

I looked at her.

"Because I spent six months saving for something I loved, and you destroyed it because you didn't want me to have one good day.""

Mia's face twisted.

"Everyone always chooses you.""

I almost laughed.

"Do they?""

She looked away.

I walked upstairs.

My room still smelled faintly of fabric and perfume.

The ruined dress was still on my bed.

I had carefully gathered the pieces into the garment bag because I couldn't bring myself to throw it away.

I sat on the edge of the mattress.

My graduation ceremony had started hours earlier.

My name had been called without me.

I had missed the moment I had worked toward for years.

My phone vibrated.

A message from my best friend, Chloe.

Where are you? I saved you a seat. Your dad said something happened.

I typed a reply.

I'm sorry. I couldn't make it.

She called immediately.

I answered.

"Aaliyah? What happened?""

I looked at the dress.

"Mia destroyed it.""

There was silence.

Then Chloe said, "I'm coming over.""

"You don't have to.""

"I wasn't asking.""

Twenty minutes later, she appeared at my bedroom door carrying a large shopping bag.

Inside was a simple black dress.

It wasn't expensive, but it fit me perfectly.

"I bought this on the way," she said.

"I figured you might need something for dinner.""

I stared at her.

"Chloe, I can't afford—"

"It's a gift.""

I hugged her.

For the first time that day, I cried without trying to hide it.

After she left, I heard a knock downstairs.

Then Dad called my name.

"Aaliyah? Come down, sweetheart.""

I wiped my face and went downstairs.

A man was standing in the living room.

He was older than the photograph I had seen, with gray at his temples and a small scar near his eyebrow.

He was holding a blue cardboard box.

I recognized the box immediately.

Not because I had seen it before.

Because I had seen its photograph.

My mother's handwriting was written across the lid.

*FOR AALIYAH.*

Daniel turned.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then he smiled.

"You look exactly like your mother.""

I swallowed.

"Are you really my uncle?""

He nodded.

"Yes, sweetheart.""

He placed the box on the coffee table.

"I brought this because I think it's time you knew what she was trying to protect.""

Dad stood beside me.

Daniel opened the lid.

Inside were photographs, letters, bank statements, a small silver key, and a sealed envelope bearing my mother's signature.

I picked up the envelope.

My name was written across the front.

My hands trembled.

"Can I read it?""

Daniel nodded.

I carefully opened the seal.

The first line made my knees weak.

My darling Aaliyah,

If Daniel has finally given you this box, then I hope it means the people I was afraid of no longer have control over your future.

I kept reading.

There is something I never told your father because I didn't want him to carry the burden while I was sick.

The house by the ocean was never sold.

I looked up.

Daniel nodded.

"The property still exists.""

I continued.

I transferred it into a company owned equally by you and Daniel. It was never meant to be sold, borrowed against, or used for anyone else's benefit.

But there is something even more important.

The next paragraph was underlined twice.

The blue box contains the original documents proving who attempted to change the ownership records.

I looked at the papers.

There were several signatures.

One belonged to Vanessa.

Another belonged to Richard Cole, the attorney.

But the final document made my stomach turn.

It was dated six months before my mother's death.

And beneath the signature of the person who had authorized the transfer was a name I knew better than anyone.

*David Bennett.*

My father.

I slowly turned toward him.

He stared at the document as though he had never seen it before.

Daniel closed his eyes.

"That's what I was afraid of," he whispered.

Dad stepped closer.

"That isn't my signature.""

I looked between them.

"Then whose is it?""

Daniel removed another paper from the box.

His voice shook.

"That's why I came here, Aaliyah.""

He placed the second document beside the first.

"Your mother discovered the forgery before she died. But she never found out who actually signed it.""

I looked down.

The second document contained a handwritten note.

My mother's handwriting.

If David denies signing this, believe him.

I felt my heart pounding.

Then I read the sentence underneath.

Because the person responsible is someone neither of you suspects.

A noise came from the staircase.

We all turned.

Vanessa was standing on the last step.

She had heard everything.

Her eyes were fixed on the open blue box.

And for the first time since I had known her, she looked genuinely terrified.

"Close it," she whispered.

Dad stepped forward.

"Vanessa, what did you do?""

She shook her head.

"David, please. You don't understand.""

Daniel stood between her and the box.

"Then tell us why your signature is on the transfer.""

Vanessa looked at him.

Then at me.

And finally, she said the words that made the entire room go silent.

"Because I didn't steal Aaliyah's inheritance.""

May you like

She pointed toward my father.

"Your mother gave it to me.""
