Chapter 1: The Dress She Tried to Destroy

I knew something was wrong before I even opened my bedroom door.

My stepsister was standing in the hallway, smiling at her phone. The moment she noticed me, she slipped it into her pocket and straightened her expression.

“Going somewhere, Aaliyah?”” Mia asked.

“To get ready. My graduation ceremony starts in two hours.””

“Oh, right. Graduation.””

She stretched the word like it was something unpleasant.

I should have recognized the warning in her voice. I should have wondered why she was standing outside my bedroom instead of getting ready for the afternoon herself.

But I was too excited.

For the first time in my life, I was graduating with honors. My name was going to be announced in front of hundreds of people. My father had already promised to sit in the front row, and he had spent the entire previous week reminding everyone that his daughter was graduating.

My daughter.

Those two words meant more to me than any certificate.

I had spent six months saving for my graduation dress. Every Saturday and Sunday, I worked at the grocery store near our neighborhood. When coworkers called out sick, I volunteered for their shifts.

I stopped buying coffee on my way to class. I walked home in the rain rather than spending money on a ride.

Sometimes, I skipped lunch.

All because I wanted one beautiful thing that I could say I had earned myself.

The dress was deep blue, with a simple waistline and delicate sleeves. It wasn't covered in diamonds or expensive decorations. It didn't need to be.

When I first tried it on, my father had stood in the doorway of the fitting room for several seconds without speaking.

Then he smiled.

"Your mother would have loved that dress," he said.

I nearly cried.

My mother had died when I was seven. I remembered her perfume, her warm hands, and the way she used to sing while making breakfast. I didn't remember everything about her, but I remembered how she made me feel.

Safe.

Dad rarely talked about her. Whenever he did, his voice became quieter.

That dress was the closest thing I had to bringing a little piece of her into one of the biggest days of my life.

Mia knew that.

She had even accompanied me to the store when I bought it.

Now, as I pushed past her and entered my bedroom, I discovered why she had been smiling.

My garment bag was lying open across my bed.

At first, I thought the dress had fallen out.

Then I noticed the blue fabric scattered across the carpet.

One strip was near my desk. Another was hanging from the edge of my laundry basket.

I stepped closer.

My stomach dropped.

The dress had been cut apart.

One sleeve was completely missing. The front had several jagged openings, and the skirt had been sliced almost from the waist to the hem.

I picked it up with trembling hands.

For several seconds, I couldn't breathe.

"Mia?""

She appeared in my doorway.

"What?""

"What did you do?""

She looked at the dress and shrugged.

"Honestly? I did you a favor.""

I stared at her.

"You destroyed it.""

"It was ugly.""

"You cut it apart!""

"Then wear something else.""

"My graduation is in two hours!""

Mia rolled her eyes.

"You're acting like someone died.""

I felt something crack inside my chest.

"You knew how much I worked for this.""

"Yes. We all heard about it. Every single day.""

I looked at her, waiting for even the smallest sign of regret.

There wasn't one.

Instead, she leaned against the doorframe and examined her freshly painted nails.

"You always make everything about yourself, Aaliyah. Your grades. Your little awards.

Your graduation. Now this ridiculous dress.""

"Why would you do this to me?""

"Because someone needed to remind you that you're not the center of the universe.""

Before I could respond, Vanessa appeared behind her.

My stepmother had been married to Dad for five years. She had a talent for making cruelty sound like reasonable advice.

"What is all this shouting?""

I held up the dress.

"Look what Mia did.""

Vanessa barely glanced at it.

"Lower your voice.""

"She cut my graduation dress!""

"Mia told me there was an accident.""

I stared at her.

"An accident? There are at least twenty cuts in it!""

Vanessa sighed as if I were exhausting her.

"Today is supposed to be a happy day. Do you really want to ruin it over a piece of clothing?""

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"She ruined it. Not me.""

Mia gave her mother a small, satisfied smile.

Vanessa placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Go change, Aaliyah. Your father will be home soon.""

Then she added something that made my blood run cold.

"And please don't start another argument. Mia has had a difficult week.""

A difficult week.

Mia had spent the previous week shopping, going out with friends, and complaining that her new birthday vacation wasn't luxurious enough.

Meanwhile, I had been working double shifts.

I opened my mouth, but the sound of the front door interrupted me.

Dad was home.

"Aaliyah?"" he called from downstairs.

I tried to answer.

Nothing came out.

His footsteps approached, and seconds later, he appeared carrying a small bouquet of white flowers and my graduation cap.

His smile disappeared when he saw my face.

Then he saw the dress.

The flowers slipped lower in his hand.

"What happened?""

Mia immediately straightened.

"David, it's not a big deal.""

Dad ignored her.

"Aaliyah, sweetheart?""

I held out the ruined dress.

"Mia cut it.""

His jaw tightened.

"Did you cut your sister's dress?""

Mia crossed her arms.

"She was going to embarrass herself in it anyway.""

"I loved it," I whispered.

Dad looked at me, then at the dress.

Something changed in his expression.

He placed the flowers and graduation cap on my desk.

Then he walked across the hallway and entered Mia's bedroom.

Vanessa followed him.

"David, what are you doing?""

He returned carrying Mia's cream-colored designer handbag.

It was the birthday present he had bought her three months earlier. Mia had bragged about it for weeks.

"Three thousand dollars," Dad said quietly.

"You told me this was the most beautiful bag you'd ever owned.""

Mia's face changed.

"Dad, that's mine.""

He took a pair of scissors from the utility drawer.

I recognized the pink handles.

They belonged to me.

Before anyone could stop him, Dad cut through the handbag's strap.

Mia screamed.

"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?""

He made another cut along the leather.

Vanessa rushed forward.

"David! Have you lost your mind?""

Dad placed the ruined handbag beside my dress.

"Apparently, we're destroying things people work hard to earn today.""

Mia's eyes filled with tears.

"You ruined my birthday present!""

Dad looked at her.

"Yes.""

Then he turned toward Vanessa.

"It's just a piece of leather, isn't it?""

Vanessa went completely still.

For years, I had watched Dad give in whenever she complained about me being too sensitive. I had watched him ask me to forgive Mia because she was younger, because she was spoiled, because she didn't know better.

This time, he didn't ask me to forgive anyone.

He looked at me instead.

"I'm sorry I didn't stop this sooner.""

I didn't understand what he meant.

Not until he walked to his study, returned with a thick brown folder, and placed it on my desk.

Mia stopped crying.

Vanessa's expression changed.

"David," she said carefully.

"What is that?""

Dad opened the folder.

May you like

"Something I should have shown my daughter a long time ago.""

And when he turned the first page toward me, I saw my mother's name.
