Chapter 2: The Secret Inside My Mother's File
I had never seen my father look at Vanessa the way he did that afternoon.
He wasn't shouting.
He wasn't threatening anyone.
He was simply finished.
"Sit down," he said.
Vanessa remained standing.
"David, this is not the time.""
"Actually, Vanessa, this is exactly the time.""
Mia wiped her cheeks with the back of her hand.
"Can someone explain why everyone is acting like I committed a crime? I cut a dress. That's all.""
Dad looked at her.
"You entered a room that wasn't yours, took something you knew was important, and deliberately destroyed it.""
"She has other clothes!""
"That wasn't the point.""
Mia looked toward her mother.
Vanessa stepped between them.
"You're making a mistake. Aaliyah is upset, and you're allowing her to turn this into some family crisis.""
Dad opened the folder.
"Do you recognize this document?""
Vanessa glanced down.
Her face lost its color.
It was a legal document with my mother's full name at the top.
I moved closer.
"What is it?""
Dad pulled out a chair for me.
"Your mother left you something, sweetheart.""
I looked at the paper.
There were numbers, legal language, signatures, and the name of a financial institution.
"I don't understand.""
"Your mother had a life insurance policy. She also owned a small investment account and part of a property her parents left behind.""
I blinked.
"Grandma's house?""
Dad nodded.
"Among other things.""
I had known my mother came from a comfortable family, but I had never understood the details. After she died, Dad handled everything.
He had told me there was enough money to cover my education.
I had assumed that meant he had saved it himself.
"Your mother arranged for a trust to be established in your name," he continued.
"It was meant to support you until you turned twenty-one. Your education, your housing, and eventually your future.""
Vanessa folded her arms.
"I don't see what any of this has to do with a dress.""
Dad didn't look at her.
"Because the trust was supposed to be protected.""
He placed another document on the desk.
I noticed several withdrawal records.
My eyes moved down the page.
Then I looked up.
"Why are there withdrawals?""
Dad took a breath.
"That's what I've been trying to understand.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"David, we discussed this. The money was used for family expenses.""
"Not all of it.""
"You're being ridiculous.""
Dad turned another page.
"Nearly eighty thousand dollars was transferred over several years.""
My mouth fell open.
"Eighty thousand?""
He nodded.
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked annoyed, not embarrassed.
"Your father was responsible for the household," she said.
"We all benefited from those decisions.""
"Was that my money?"" I asked.
She sighed.
"Don't make it sound so dramatic.""
"Was it?""
Dad answered before she could.
"Some of it was spent on things that had nothing to do with your education or your care.""
I felt dizzy.
"What things?""
He hesitated.
Then he placed a printed statement in front of me.
There were payments for luxury hotels, jewelry stores, expensive restaurants, and a car dealership.
One transaction stood out.
$12,600.
The description read: PRIVATE SCHOOL TUITION.
I looked at Mia.
She had attended a private high school for two years after Vanessa insisted public school wasn't good enough for her.
My voice barely worked.
"Was this used for Mia?""
Vanessa lifted her chin.
"She needed a good education.""
"So did I.""
"You were perfectly happy at your school.""
"I worked weekends to pay for my textbooks!""
"Your father provided everything else.""
Dad's hand struck the desk.
"Enough.""
The room fell silent.
He turned to me.
"Your mother wanted you to have choices. She wanted you to be able to attend college without worrying about money. She wanted you to have a secure beginning.""
I stared at the papers.
All those years, I had believed my family was simply struggling financially.
When my friends went on trips, I stayed home.
When they bought new laptops, I saved for months.
When my graduation fees came due, I took extra shifts.
I had never blamed Dad.
I had thought he was doing his best.
Now I was discovering that money had existed.
My money.
And someone had decided I didn't need to know.
"Why didn't you tell me?"" I asked him.
Dad looked down.
"Because I believed everything was being handled properly.""
"You didn't check?""
"I trusted Vanessa to manage the household accounts. She showed me summaries. I didn't know the original statements had been withheld.""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"Oh, wonderful. Now I'm the villain because I paid bills and made sure everyone had a comfortable life.""
Dad closed the folder.
"Then you shouldn't have a problem explaining every transaction.""
Her mouth tightened.
Mia stepped closer to her mother.
"Mom, what's happening?""
Vanessa ignored her.
"David, we need to discuss this privately.""
"No.""
"You don't want to humiliate the family.""
Dad looked at my ruined dress.
"That ship has sailed.""
He reached into the folder and removed another document.
This one had a bank's letterhead.
"I called the trust administrator this morning," he said.
"I asked for a complete accounting. I also requested that all discretionary transfers be suspended until the review is finished.""
Vanessa's eyes widened.
"You did what?""
"Exactly what I should have done years ago.""
Mia looked between them.
"Does that mean my allowance is gone?""
Nobody answered.
She turned to Dad.
"You can't do that! You promised to help me with my apartment.""
Dad stared at her.
"I promised to help you become independent. I never promised to fund every decision you make.""
Mia's voice became shrill.
"This is because of her!""
She pointed at me.
I stepped back.
"She ruined my bag!"" Mia continued.
"You destroyed something worth three thousand dollars because she started crying over a dress!""
Dad's expression hardened.
"No. I destroyed the bag because I wanted you to understand how it feels when someone deliberately damages something you value.""
"But it's different!""
"Why?""
"Because I didn't work for my bag!""
The words came out before she could stop herself.
Silence.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Dad slowly turned toward her.
Mia looked as though she wanted to disappear.
I stared at the designer bag on my bed.
For the first time, I understood why Mia had always seemed so confident about money.
She had never needed to earn anything.
She had simply expected it to appear.
Dad gathered the documents.
"Tomorrow, we're meeting with the attorney.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"You're not bringing this outside the family.""
"I am protecting my daughter's inheritance.""
Then he looked at Mia.
"And you will apologize to Aaliyah.""
Mia laughed.
"Seriously?""
"Yes.""
"Fine. I'm sorry you can't afford another dress.""
Dad pointed toward the hallway.
"Go downstairs.""
Mia stormed out.
Vanessa followed, but before she left, she turned toward me.
Her voice dropped.
"You should be careful what you ask for, Aaliyah. Sometimes the truth costs more than people realize.""
I didn't answer.
Dad waited until she was gone.
Then he sat beside me.
"There's something else.""
I wiped my eyes.
"What?""
He looked at the papers again.
"Your mother's trust wasn't the only thing she left behind.""
He pulled out a faded photograph.
It showed my mother standing beside a little girl.
A girl who looked exactly like me.
On the back, in my mother's handwriting, were five words:
For my daughter, when she's ready.
May you like
Dad placed it in my hand.
And suddenly, I realized he was afraid of what I might ask next.
