Chapter 8: The Man Who Had Been Hiding the Evidence

The next morning, we met Margaret at her office.

Mia came with us.

She sat beside me, looking smaller than I had ever seen her.

Dad had barely spoken since receiving Margaret's call.

He kept reading the pharmacy records as if the name might somehow change.

Richard Cole.

The attorney Vanessa had trusted.

The man who had handled the property transfer.

The man whose name appeared on the altered prescription.

Margaret placed three folders on the table.

"There's a reason I've asked everyone to come," she said.

She opened the first folder.

"We have confirmation that Richard Cole accessed your mother's medical records shortly before her death. He also requested a change to the prescription instructions.""

Dad leaned forward.

"Was he authorized?""

"No.""

"Then why was he allowed to do it?""

"That's part of the investigation.""

She turned to Daniel.

"We also found evidence that the property transfer was submitted using a forged signature.""

Daniel nodded.

"That matches what we suspected.""

Margaret opened the second folder.

"However, the most important discovery concerns the trust.""

She pulled out a document.

"Your mother's trust was never legally transferred to Vanessa. The document she showed you yesterday appears to be an altered draft.""

Dad stared.

"So Aaliyah still owns everything?""

"Her beneficial interest was never removed.""

I felt my heart pounding.

"What does that mean?""

Margaret smiled gently.

"It means the money your mother left for you remains legally yours. The property is also protected by the original partnership agreement, pending verification of the current ownership records.""

I looked at Dad.

For the first time in weeks, he seemed able to breathe.

But Margaret wasn't finished.

"There's another issue.""

She opened the third folder.

"Richard Cole has been withdrawing money from several client accounts through a company registered under a relative's name.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Was Vanessa involved?""

Margaret nodded.

"Her name appears on several communications.""

Dad closed his eyes.

"How much?""

"We're still calculating the total.""

I felt sick.

"Could she go to prison?""

Margaret paused.

"If the evidence supports criminal charges, that's possible. But we need to let the investigators establish what happened.""

Mia began crying quietly.

Dad put a hand on her shoulder.

Margaret turned to her.

"Mia, I understand you have some messages from your mother. Would you be willing to provide them?""

Mia nodded.

"Yes.""

She unlocked her phone and handed it over.

Margaret reviewed the messages.

Then she stopped.

"What is this?""

She turned the screen toward Dad.

It was a conversation between Vanessa and Richard.

The first message was from Richard.

The girl is graduating next week. We need to make sure David doesn't start reviewing the old accounts.

Vanessa replied:

I'll handle it.

Richard:

The original records are still missing.

Vanessa:

I know where they are.

Richard:

Then get them before Daniel returns.

I stared at the screen.

Daniel leaned forward.

"When was this sent?""

Mia checked the date.

"Three weeks ago.""

Dad looked at her.

"Why didn't you tell us?""

She started crying harder.

"Because Mom told me it was private. She said if I showed anyone, we'd lose everything.""

I took her hand.

She squeezed it.

Margaret carefully photographed the messages.

"These are important.""

She looked at Dad.

"Has Vanessa contacted you today?""

"No.""

"Do not contact her. We'll handle the next steps.""

But as we left the office, Dad received another message.

It was from Vanessa.

I know you've spoken to Margaret. I want to see Aaliyah. Alone.

Dad showed me.

I shook my head.

"Why does she want to see me?""

"I don't know.""

A second message arrived.

I have something your mother left for you. Something Daniel doesn't know about.

I looked at my uncle.

He read the message over my shoulder.

His expression changed.

"What is it?"" I asked.

He shook his head.

"I don't know.""

Dad immediately called Margaret.

She advised us not to meet Vanessa alone. If she had additional documents, she could hand them to the attorney.

But Vanessa sent another message.

If you want to know why your mother really trusted me, come to the old house at five. Bring no one.

I stared at the screen.

"She wants me to come alone.""

Dad shook his head.

"Absolutely not.""

I understood his fear.

But I also knew Vanessa had spent years controlling what I knew about my mother.

I was tired of hearing half-truths.

"I'm not going alone," I said.

"But I want to hear what she has to say.""

Margaret arranged for an investigator to accompany us.

At five, we arrived at the house.

Vanessa was waiting in the living room.

She looked different.

Her hair was untidy, and her expensive coat was hanging loosely from her shoulders.

She had a small box on the coffee table.

When she saw me, she stood.

"You came.""

"I came to hear the truth.""

Vanessa glanced toward the investigator.

"Who is that?""

"Someone who makes sure we all tell it.""

She sighed.

Then she opened the box.

Inside was a small gold bracelet.

I recognized it immediately.

My mother had worn it in almost every childhood photograph.

I stepped closer.

"Where did you get that?""

"Your mother gave it to me.""

"Why?""

Vanessa picked up the bracelet.

"Because she knew she was dying.""

I looked at her.

"Tell me the truth.""

She sat down.

"Your mother and I were friends before I married your father. We worked together at a charity organization. She trusted me.""

Daniel, standing behind me, stiffened.

"That isn't what she told me.""

Vanessa ignored him.

"After she became ill, she asked me to help organize her affairs. She was frightened about leaving you behind.""

"Then why did you take the money?""

Vanessa looked down.

"Because I thought I could fix everything.""

"How?""

"Richard promised he could protect the estate. He said he knew how to move the property into a company that would keep it safe.""

"Then why did the money disappear?""

Her eyes filled.

"Because I made a terrible decision.""

I stared at her.

"Was my mother poisoned?""

Vanessa's face changed.

"No.""

"Then why did Richard alter her prescription?""

She shook her head.

"I didn't know he had done that.""

"Did you know he was taking money?""

She didn't answer.

The investigator stepped forward.

"Mrs. Bennett, you need to answer the question.""

Vanessa began crying.

"I knew some money was being moved. I thought it was temporary.""

"How much?""

"I don't know.""

"Did you sign the transfer documents?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

Dad's voice came from behind me.

"Why?""

Vanessa turned toward him.

"Because Richard told me it was the only way to keep the estate from being taken by the creditors.""

"What creditors?""

She looked at me.

"Your mother's brother.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"That's impossible.""

Vanessa reached into the box and removed another document.

"Your mother had debts.""

Daniel stared.

"She had no significant debts.""

"She did.""

"Show me.""

Vanessa handed him the paper.

He read it.

Then he looked up slowly.

"This is a loan agreement.""

She nodded.

"Your mother borrowed money from Richard's company.""

Dad frowned.

"Why would she do that?""

Vanessa looked at me.

"Because she was trying to pay for something.""

"What?""

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

"Your medical treatment.""

The room went silent.

I felt the floor shift beneath me.

"My treatment?""

"When you were little, you needed surgery. Your mother was terrified the insurance wouldn't cover everything.""

I remembered a hospital room.

A stuffed rabbit.

My mother's hand holding mine.

But I had never known there had been a financial crisis.

Vanessa continued.

"She borrowed money to make sure you received the best care.""

Daniel shook his head.

"That loan was paid.""

Vanessa looked at him.

"Not all of it.""

The investigator asked for the documents.

Vanessa handed them over.

Then she looked directly at me.

"Your mother didn't leave you an inheritance because she didn't trust your father.""

I frowned.

"Then why?""

Vanessa's voice broke.

"Because she knew Richard was dangerous. She wanted you to have something he couldn't reach.""

I stared at the bracelet.

For the first time, I wondered whether Vanessa had been telling one piece of the truth.

Then she said something that changed everything.

"Richard wasn't the only person who wanted your mother's money.""

She looked toward Dad.

"Your father knew about the loan.""

Dad stepped forward.

"That's not true.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"David, you signed the original agreement.""

I looked at him.

He was pale.

"Did you?""

Dad swallowed.

Then he said quietly:

"I signed a document to help your mother.""

Vanessa nodded.

"And Richard has the original.""

The investigator immediately asked where.

Vanessa pointed toward the box.

"There's a letter.""

I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten note from my mother.

It contained a single sentence.

David, if Richard ever shows you the original loan agreement, don't let him convince you that I was the one who borrowed the money.

I looked up.

Dad was staring at the letter.

May you like

And he whispered:

"Because I was the one who borrowed it.""
