Chapter 8: The Video That Changed Everything
The USB drive sat between us like a weapon.
Nobody touched it.
Not immediately.
Because sometimes the truth is terrifying before you even know what it is.
Daniel took it.
"We need to be careful.""
I nodded.
The old version of me would have rushed.
Demanded answers.
Confronted Vanessa immediately.
But the person I became after everything was different.
Pain teaches patience.
We watched the video that night in Daniel's apartment.
The screen was small.
The quality was poor.
But it was enough.
Rain fell across the camera view.
A parking lot.
My car.
Vanessa.
Michael.
I stopped breathing.
Seeing them there was different from imagining it.
Reality has a weight imagination doesn't.
The video showed Vanessa arguing.
Her hands moved aggressively.
Michael looked frustrated.
Then Vanessa grabbed the keys.
She walked toward my car.
Minutes later, Michael followed.
Then something happened.
Something I didn't expect.
Vanessa wasn't just scared.
She was angry.
She slammed the car door.
She said something.
The audio was unclear.
Daniel increased the volume.
Static.
Rain.
Then one sentence.
Clear.
"I don't care what happens to Emma.""
I covered my mouth.
Because hearing those words hurt more than anything else.
Not because Vanessa had hurt me.
I already knew that.
Because she had watched me as someone she didn't love.
Michael turned off the video.
"I'm sorry.""
I stared at the screen.
"How long have you had this?""
"Years.""
"Years?""
He looked ashamed.
"I couldn't face what I did.""
Daniel stood.
"You let her suffer.""
Michael nodded.
"I know.""
That night, we made a decision.
We weren't going to confront Vanessa emotionally.
We were going to confront her with proof.
The next morning, we met her at a café.
She arrived twenty minutes late.
No apology.
She sat down.
"Why are we here?""
I placed the USB drive on the table.
Her face changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
Fear.
"What is that?""
Daniel answered.
"The truth.""
Vanessa stared at him.
Then at me.
"You went digging.""
"No.""
I looked directly at her.
"Someone finally stopped protecting you.""
She laughed.
"You really think you know everything?""
I pushed the USB drive closer.
"Do you want to explain before we watch it?""
Her silence was enough.
"You remember.""
Her eyes hardened.
"You don't understand.""
"Then help me.""
For a moment, I saw my sister.
The girl who shared my bedroom.
The girl who used to braid my hair.
The girl who promised she would always protect me.
Then it disappeared.
"You always had everything.""
I frowned.
"What?""
"You had sympathy.""
I stared.
"Because I was injured?""
"Because everyone looked at you.""
Her voice became louder.
"Every mistake you made was forgiven because you were struggling.""
I couldn't believe it.
"So you decided I deserved this?""
"I decided someone had to stop you from being the center of everything.""
Daniel shook his head.
"You need help.""
Vanessa looked at him.
"Don't pretend you're better.""
"What does that mean?""
Her smile returned.
A cold one.
"Ask Emma why I was the only one who stayed after the accident.""
I froze.
"What?""
Vanessa leaned back.
"Ask her why she forgot the night before.""
My heart started racing.
"What are you talking about?""
She stood.
"You really don't remember.""
She walked away.
Leaving us with the worst possible answer.
Because suddenly I wondered.
Was there something else?
May you like
Something my mind had buried?
Something Vanessa knew that I didn't?
