Chapter 6: The Secret She Never Expected Me to Find

Six months after Vanessa’s wedding was canceled, I thought my life had finally become quiet again.

Not happy.

Not completely.

But quiet.

There is a difference.

Happiness arrives slowly after betrayal. It does not knock on your door one morning and announce that it has returned. It sneaks in through small moments.

A morning where you make coffee without thinking about the person who hurt you.

A day where your shoulder aches less than yesterday.

A night where you fall asleep without replaying painful memories.

That was where I was.

Recovering.

Moving forward.

Until I received a letter that made everything stop.

It arrived on a Tuesday morning.

No return address.

No name.

Just my apartment number written in black ink.

I almost threw it away.

Almost.

Something inside me told me not to.

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a single page.

Three sentences.

"Vanessa didn't act alone.

Ask her about the night of the accident.

Ask her about the missing footage.

You deserve the whole truth.""

My fingers went cold.

I read it again.

Then again.

Missing footage?

I sat at my kitchen table for almost an hour, staring at those words.

Because there was one thing I had never questioned.

The accident.

Everyone had told me the same story.

A rainy night.

A dangerous road.

A terrible coincidence.

But now I wondered.

What if it wasn't?

What if Vanessa's confession was only part of the truth?

I called Daniel.

He answered quickly.

"Emma?""

His voice sounded surprised.

We hadn't spoken much since he left town.

Not because there was anger between us.

Because sometimes two people can survive the same storm but still need distance afterward.

"Daniel, I need to ask you something.""

A pause.

"Is this about Vanessa?""

"Yes.""

His tone changed immediately.

"What happened?""

I told him about the letter.

When I finished, he was silent.

Then he said something I didn't expect.

"I received one too.""

I stood up.

"What?""

"Two weeks ago.""

My heart started beating faster.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I didn't know if it was real.""

"What did it say?""

Daniel hesitated.

Then:

"That Vanessa had been protecting someone.""

The room suddenly felt smaller.

"Who?""

"I don't know.""

I looked at the letter again.

"Daniel, we need to find out.""

That evening, we met at a small diner outside the city.

The same place where nobody knew us.

Nobody knew our history.

Nobody looked at us with pity.

Daniel placed a folder on the table.

"I found something.""

I opened it.

Inside were copies of old documents.

Insurance papers.

Police notes.

A repair invoice.

I scanned through them.

Then I saw it.

The date.

The night of my accident.

"The car was repaired before the accident report was finalized.""

Daniel nodded.

"I noticed that too.""

"Why?""

"Someone paid for damage to your car two days before the crash.""

My stomach tightened.

"Who?""

He pointed to the invoice.

A name was written at the bottom.

Not Vanessa.

Someone else.

I whispered it.

"Michael.""

Daniel looked at me.

"You know him?""

I shook my head.

"No.""

But the name felt familiar.

Like something buried deep in my memory.

Then suddenly, I remembered.

Michael.

Vanessa's college boyfriend.

The man she dated before Daniel.

The man she always said she wanted nothing to do with.

The man who disappeared from her life years ago.

I looked at Daniel.

"Why would he pay for my car?""

Neither of us had an answer.

Until my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

But Daniel looked at me.

"Answer.""

I pressed the phone to my ear.

"Hello?""

A man's voice came through.

"Emma.""

My body froze.

I knew that voice.

Not because I had heard it recently.

Because I had heard it once.

The night everything changed.

"Who is this?""

A pause.

Then:

"You don't remember me, do you?""

My grip tightened around the phone.

"Michael?""

Silence.

Then a quiet sigh.

"Finally.""

I stood.

"Why did you send the letter?""

"I didn't.""

My eyebrows pulled together.

"Then who did?""

Another pause.

Longer this time.

"Emma, you need to listen carefully.""

His voice became serious.

"Vanessa didn't push you because she hated you.""

I felt anger rise.

"Don't defend her.""

"I'm not.""

His next words made my blood run cold.

"She pushed you because she was trying to stop you from finding out what I did.""

The diner noise disappeared.

Everything disappeared.

"What did you do?""

Michael breathed heavily.

May you like

Then he said:

"I was the one driving the car that night.""
