Chapter 7: The Man Behind the Accident

I didn't speak.

I couldn't.

My mind rejected the sentence before my heart could understand it.

Michael was driving?

Not me?

Not some random stranger?

Him?

"Emma?"" Daniel asked.

I lowered the phone slightly.

"He's here.""

Daniel immediately stood.

"Where?""

I put the phone back to my ear.

"Where are you?""

Michael gave an address.

A quiet warehouse district twenty minutes away.

"I'll explain everything.""

I almost hung up.

But I needed answers.

For years, I had carried the weight of that accident.

The pain.

The therapy.

The fear.

The feeling that my body had betrayed me.

And now I was being told someone else caused it.

Daniel drove.

Neither of us spoke much.

When we arrived, Michael was waiting outside an old brick building.

He looked different from the photos I had seen years ago.

Older.

Tired.

Broken.

The moment he saw me, his face changed.

"Emma.""

I stepped back.

"You knew me.""

He nodded.

"I did.""

"Then why did you let me believe I caused my own accident?""

His eyes dropped.

"Because I was scared.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Scared?""

I pointed at my shoulder.

"Do you know what I went through?""

He looked like he did.

And somehow that made it worse.

"I know.""

"No, you don't.""

"I visited the hospital.""

I froze.

"What?""

Michael swallowed.

"The night of the accident.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"You were there?""

Michael nodded.

"I was.""

My voice became quiet.

"Why?""

He looked away.

"Because I was the reason you were there.""

We went inside.

The warehouse was mostly empty.

Just a table.

Two chairs.

A place for a confession.

Michael sat down.

"Vanessa called me that night.""

I felt my stomach twist.

"Why?""

"Because she needed help.""

"With what?""

He looked at me.

"Getting rid of evidence.""

The words hit like a physical blow.

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Start from the beginning.""

Michael nodded.

"Vanessa borrowed your car.""

I already knew that.

"She was upset. We had been arguing.""

"About?""

He looked embarrassed.

"Money.""

I frowned.

"Money?""

"Vanessa had expensive tastes. She always wanted more. When I couldn't give her what she wanted, she became angry.""

He rubbed his face.

"That night, she took your car without permission.""

I remembered the argument.

The keys.

The rain.

The anger.

"She hit something while driving.""

Michael continued.

"She called me because she knew I had connections to a repair shop.""

"Why not tell our parents?""

His eyes filled with shame.

"Because she was afraid.""

"Of what?""

"That they would find out.""

I stared at him.

"That doesn't explain the crash.""

Michael looked down.

"I went to meet her.""

The silence stretched.

"She was driving your car when I arrived.""

My heart pounded.

"Then what?""

"She was crying.""

"Why?""

"Because she knew she had damaged your car and you would be furious.""

I closed my eyes.

That sounded like Vanessa.

Not remorse.

Fear of consequences.

"She gave me the keys.""

Michael looked at his hands.

"And I drove.""

The room went silent.

"Why?""

"Because she was too emotional.""

He took a breath.

"We were arguing. I wasn't paying attention.""

I felt sick.

"The road was wet.""

He nodded.

"I lost control.""

The memories returned.

The headlights.

The impact.

The pain.

"But then you lied.""

Michael nodded.

"Yes.""

"Why?""

His voice cracked.

"Because Vanessa begged me.""

I laughed.

A painful sound.

"Of course she did.""

Michael looked at me.

"She told me if anyone knew, your family would hate her forever.""

I stared.

"And you protected her.""

"I was young.""

"So was I.""

That shut him up.

Daniel leaned forward.

"What about the footage?""

Michael looked at him.

"That was Vanessa.""

"What footage?""

"The security camera from the nearby store.""

My heart stopped.

"There was footage?""

Michael nodded.

"She deleted it.""

The anger that rose inside me was different.

The first betrayal had been personal.

This one was bigger.

This wasn't a sister being cruel.

This was someone rewriting my entire life.

"Why tell me now?""

Michael looked toward the door.

"Because Vanessa threatened me.""

"With what?""

He hesitated.

Then:

"She said if I ever told you the truth, she would release something that would destroy me.""

Daniel frowned.

"What?""

Michael looked at us.

"Evidence that I wasn't the only person responsible.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"What does that mean?""

Michael reached into his jacket.

He placed a small USB drive on the table.

"Everything is on here.""

I stared at it.

"What's on it?""

May you like

His answer was almost a whisper.

"The video Vanessa deleted.""
